Buzz Aldrin —Edwin E. Aldrin, Jr. (1930- ) was born in Montclair, New Jersey, on 20 January 1930. He attended the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, entered the United States Air Force, and received pilot training in 1951. Aldrin flew sixty-six combat missions in F-86s in Korea, destroying two MIG-15 aircraft. Known to all as by his nickname, "Buzz," Aldrin was also one of the most important figures in the accomplishment of Project Apollo in successfully landing an American on the Moon in 1960s. Aldrin was chosen as a member of the three-person Apollo 11 crew that landed on the Moon on 20 July 1969, fulfilling the mandate of President John F. Kennedy to send Americans to the Moon before the end of the decade. Aldrin was the second American to set foot on the lunar surface. He and Apollo 11 commander Neil A. Armstrong spent about twenty hours on the Moon before returning to the orbiting Apollo Command Module. The spacecraft and the lunar explorers returned to Earth on 24 July 1969. In 1971 Aldrin returned to the Air Force and retired a year later. He wrote two important books about his activities in the U.S. space program. In

It's common to visit other carillons in the vicinity during a congress; these are not listed. When more than one location is listed, each served as an official host for part of the Congress.

'We have an excellent pool of candidates'
    Sunday, July 10, 2005
After a year of turmoil, self-doubt and recrimination, the Pittsburgh Public Schools board might be able to find a few moments of peace, however incomplete, in choosing from its current slate of candidates. Several board members say they can't go wrong with any of the four finalists for the Pittsburgh superintendency. The finalists are Gerald Dawkins, 56, superintendent of Saginaw Public Schools in Michigan; William Harner, 49, principal of Gainesville Middle School in Georgia; Christine Johns, 39, deputy superintendent of curriculum and instruction in Baltimore County Public Schools in Maryland; and Mark Roosevelt, 49, former director of the Massachusetts Business Alliance for Education. All four were trained in high-profile management programs for urban superintendents, three of the four by the Los Angeles-based Broad Center for the Management of School Systems, which emphasizes innovation and competition in school management. All have track records of reforming schools and improving student achievement, according to board member Patrick Dowd. "We have an excellent pool of candidates from which to make this selection," Dowd said.

    Creighton Williams Abrams, Jr.
General, United States Army Born at Springfield, Massachusetts, September 15, 1914, General Abrams was the U.S. commander in the Vietnam War from 1968 to 1972. A graduate (1936) of the United States Military Academy at West Point, he served in World War II and, following numerous other assignments, in 1964 became a full general and Vice Chief-of-Staff of the United States Army. Succeeding William Westmoreland as overall military commander in Vietnam, he implemented a program known as Vietnamization. This was supposed to bring a gradual end to US involvement in Vietnam and to enable the South Vietnamese to become increasingly responsible for running the war. After returning to United States, he served from 1972 to 1974 as Army Chief-of-Staff. He died in Washington, D.C. of lung cancer, September 4, 1974, the first army Chief-of-Staff to die in office. He was buried with full military honors in a special plot in Section 21 of Arlington National Cemetery. Courtesy of the United States Army:
