Academy Nominations Every year, a select number of young men and women from Massachusetts start preparing to serve their country while getting an excellent education by attending one of tshe nation's service academies: the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, The U.S. Naval Academy, and the U.S. Air Force Academy. The admissions process for these schools is different from that of most other colleges: even before undergoing the academy's rigorous selection process, interested applicants must first receive a nomination from their U.S. Representative or one of their two U.S. Senators. I am permitted to make a limited number of nominations for appointments to these academies each year. As a Navy combat veteran, I take academy nominations very seriously. I know there are many aspects about a candidate that cannot be communicated on paper. Therefore, I personally select evaluating committees for each of the academies. These evaluating committees interview each of the final 25-30 candidates personally.

Serving as a philanthropic center of the Church, the purpose of the Academy is to provide a loving Christian environment, where resident children are nurtured into adulthood. Although children are brought to the Academy for various reasons, the common thread of all the resident children is the inability of a parent of guardian to sufficiently care for them. Operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week, the Academy serves Orthodox children from all areas of the country including Arizona, Illinois, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, and New Jersey. The children are referred to the Academy through parish priests, and Philoptochos, and most recently through referrals from departments of social services in Massachusetts and New York.

Academically the children are strongly encouraged to meet their goals while receiving their formal education from the neighboring Highland Falls School District. The children are fully integrated within their schools. This year, one of our eighth graders is president of the entire Middle School Student Council. When not in school, the children are the responsibility of the Residential Life Counselors. The Residential program, which is administered by the Residential Life staff, promotes individual growth and development. Within the dormitory type

Russia's military, among the world's largest and with nuclear weapons and stockpiles that remain a global concern, suffers from severe desertion problems, a lack of qualified officers, a breakdown in the conscription system, rampant corruption, and a deficit of training and effectiveness, according to the contributors to The Russian Military: Power and Policy, The Russian Military examines the intense debate over military reform in Russia, demonstrating the myriad ways that political and social conflicts at home, and international pressures, have prevented much-needed change. The volume is co-edited by Steven E. Miller

A boarding school is a self-contained educational establishment where students not only study but where some or all students may live. Boarding school involves the combination of the residing of pupils at an institution away from their family and home, and the instruction and endowment of education to students at the same place. Main characteristics
The term boarding school fundamentally refers to classic British boarding schools , and most boarding schools around the world are modeled on the classic British boarding school. Boarding schools have specified rooms or allotted areas for different activities that occur throughout the day as defined by the boarding school administrators. These activities have a predefined structure and time set by the institution. These predefined schedules and norms are to be strictly followed, the failure of which could earn punishment . These rooms include the dormitory , where pupils share sleeping quarters, particularly on bunk beds , the refectory , where pupils take meals at fixed schedules, and the study hall , where pupils do their academic work. It also has facilities for bath and washing, and a storehouse for the storage of residents' belongings. Boarding schools also provide a

They voted 10-1 to adopt this resolution "That the City Council of the City of Worcester go on record reaffirming it’s commitment to religious freedom and in opposition to any form of abridgement to the freedom of religion, free unobstructed association and in opposition to racial profiling." This was in reaction to Governor Romney suggesting that mosques be wiretapped There's not a direct connection between such wiretapping and the management of the City, but the City Council did right in addressing the issue. The City Council has the chance to take a brave stand on another issue: the proposed U.S. Department of Peace. (Read more >>)
Target Poverty Not People Real Solutions is a group of concerned community members who have come together around the treatment of poor people in Worcester, specifically with the recent “anti-panhandler” campaign and the NIMBY (Not In My Back Yard) response to social service siting. This community-based coalition says both of these responses target the people instead of the root causes of poverty and disempowerment. The group, which has been meeting regularly for the last three months, held an event on Thursday, September 16th in front of City Hall to make public their concerns and demand a serious response from the City Manager’s office as well as the taking down of the “Panhandling is Not the Solution” billboards. The next Real Solutions meeting, which is open to anyone sharing the coalition’s concerns, will take on Tuesday, September 20th, at 7pm at Abby’s House, 52 High Street, Worcester.

They met the buses at the School Street lot and led the students and teachers around Eel Pond and past the Bell Tower to the Redfield Auditorium for a briefing and introduction to the village. The briefing included a video introduction to the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. The guided tour included four stops that were visited simultaneously by each of the four groups of students that were led by Bruce, Marga, Sandra
