53. Peterson Architects - Profile
massachusetts firm presents brief portfolio of libraries, student centers, classroom buildings, athletic facilities, galleries, and offices. Include profiles and contacts.
http://peterson-architects.com/
At Peterson Architects, the range of our design work extends from campus planning to the design of academic buildings to the detailing of furnishings and built-ins. At varying scales, these elements comprise much of our built environment. Each of our designs develops under its own unique circumstances. Many of a project’s parameters can only be determined in collaboration with the client. Thus, generalizing our approach to the design process is difficult. Nonetheless, several themes underlie much of our work:
  • The specifics of place always inform our designs. The location of a building or object will suggest ideas about its size and shape, its materials, and its relationship to the environment.
We carefully detail our buildings to imbue them with a sense of quality and workmanship.
We seek to design buildings that are “honest” in their structural expression and to highlight the structure to the degree that it contributes to the spirit of the building.
We seek to incorporate light and lighting within our buildings to accentuate the qualities of the spaces.

54. AmberGen
Develops tools for drug discovery and diagnostic assays, using cellfree expression and protein libraries to produce microarrays. Focused on asthma, osteoporosis and Alzheimer's disease, at Boston and Waltham, massachusetts.
http://www.ambergen.com/
AmberGen, Inc. is a development-stage Proteomics Company with laboratories in Boston and Waltham, Massachusetts. Dr. Kenneth Rothschild founded the company to develop tools for drug discovery and diagnostic assays based on in-vitro protein expression, photo cleavable linkers and novel labeling techniques. Several products are under development from this platform technology.
The Molecular Therapeutics Division in Waltham allows the technology to be applied to rapidly validate genes in disease associated pathways using a focused systems biology approach. This will enable novel drug targets to emerge whose biological functions are known, leading to the development of cell based assays for the screening of lead compounds. As part of this discovery, the mechanistic role of disease associated SNPs within these genes are being resolved in an effort to determine their effect on diversity and drug interactions. The Division is focused on asthma, osteoporosis and Alzheimer's disease.
The ELISA-based protein truncation test, the first such assay that allows rapid automated mutation detection, is doing well in validation trials. Applications are in screening for colorectal cancer, breast cancer, and other diseases where the mutation results in a truncated protein.

Natural Disasters, Human Disasters - Read more [PDF]. Cultural Heritage at Stake
In the wake of Hurricane Katrina many are beginning to address the damage inflicted on historical sites as well as repositories of cultural heritage. Obviously, the collections under the care of archivists, librarians and museum curators cannot take priority over efforts to rescue people and drain the city of water. Also of concern is the status of vital records from city, state, and federal governments. As of last week, the status of many repositories remained unknown and reports were just starting to come in from others. Water is not the only concern. Curators are becoming equally concerned about the spread of mold as many of these institutions still do not have electrical power and have no means to power environmental systems. The combination of water damage and the usual hot and humid climate of the Gulf Coast are perfect conditions for mold. Behind the scenes, leaders in fields of preservation and disaster recovery are beginning to strategize how to proceed in these matters. Several websites have been set up that will keep you informed on the scope of the damage and the future efforts to save the cultural heritage of the Gulf region damaged by Hurricane Katrina.
