High schools look to Web for AP offerings
July 18, 2005 BOSTON High schools in Bay State cities are beginning to add online Advanced Placement courses to catch up with wealthier communities that offer a variety of college-level courses in their classrooms. The Boston Globe reported Monday that students in Boston, Brockton, Lawrence, Fall River and Somerville will take AP courses online next school year, following the lead of Worcester, Springfield, New Bedford and Ware. Many cash-strapped communities can't afford to hire needed teachers to offer AP subjects in the classroom. But a federal grant allows Massachusetts students to take courses free of charge from Maynard-based Virtual High School. Research shows that success on AP exams is a strong predictor of success in college, and AP classes on a high school transcript can help students get into top colleges. But some say the face-to-face interaction common in wealthy suburbs is important. Online, "classroom" discussions can take days. "At first glance, this seems like a really nice solution for schools, but I worry that online courses are not as good as engaging students who don't yet have confidence in (their) college potential," said Trevor Packer, executive director of the College Board's Advanced Placement program.

Many ignoring state requirement
October 18, 2004 Most Massachusetts high schools are shrugging off a state law that requires students to take physical education each year. ADVERTISEMENT Schools elbowing aside physical education to cram in more academics is a state and national problem, worrying fitness specialists who say the reduced exercise time is increasing the prevalence of childhood obesity. Many younger students now take less than an hour a week of physical education, teachers say, and even recess has been cut back so students can spend more time on math and English and ideally perform better on high-stakes state tests. In Massachusetts, as in many other states, the problem is the worst at high schools, where students must pass state exams to earn a diploma. "It's an unintended consequence of education reform," said Kathy Pinkham, director of health and physical education for the Needham schools. "We've learned it's the reality that schools ignore the law." Nationally, less than 6 percent of high schools now require physical education for juniors and seniors, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In Massachusetts, 57 percent of high school students last year took at least one physical education class a week, according to the CDC. In 1993, 80 percent did; that same year, the Legislature passed the Education Reform Act, which required higher academic standards in the years ahead.

Home The Commonwealth Information Technology Initiative K-12 The Commonwealth Information Technology Initiative K-12 will be releasing another RFP this September 6 th for Professional Development grants. The grants will be awarded within the seven STEM Pipeline Regional Networks covering all of Massachusetts. Every K-12 school and public college operates in one of these networks. Partnerships among public schools, public colleges, and/or educational collaboratives within each region are necessary . Obtaining matching funds is also encouraged. All K-12 public schools and all Massachusetts state higher education institutions are encouraged to submit proposals. Pre-service Course Development grants for pre-service teacher courses at appropriate Massachusetts state higher education institutions will be part of the same RFP. CITI is relatively new to the world of K-12 education. Our 2004 funding has allowed us to bring the concepts that have been so successful in higher education to K-12. In approaching ITAC in the school context, we have the following two goals: Pipeline – To create a broad exposure to technology and technology-related career possibilities. It is especially important to reach student groups currently under represented in technology and computer science fields.

Green Building Codes and Standards
Codes and standards are increasingly being used to encourage the development of renewable energy, energy-efficient technologies, and high-performance buildings in Massachusetts. In addition to state requirements, codes and standards for specific building types and individual municipalities are in development to encourage a breadth of clean and green features in building projects.
Massachusetts Building Code
The 6th edition of the Massachusetts Building Code (780 CMR) is based on the Building Officials and Code Administrators (BOCA) National Building Code, and it is organized to be consistent with the BOCA code and the codes used in other regions of the country. It incorporates a number of provisions and technical requirements specific to the state of Massachusetts including some of the most stringent energy efficiency standards in the nation. Standards for new commercial buildings (everything other than residential buildings under four stories in height) reflect recent improvements in energy system technologies and in the design, construction, and operation of energy-efficient buildings. These standards are summarized in
