Massachusetts Geography Ideas
Overview: Richard A. Aieta promoted the idea that teachers could join forces to help put together a resource book to teach geography concepts and skills from a Massachusetts basis. Some of his ideas of what to include are listed below. Please add to it. What we are looking for is both student lessons and teacher resources to teach Mass geography. Before this idea was completed, Dick Aieta tragically died. But the work of sharing ideas goes on, as he would have wanted. Send back your ideas online to the Mass. Studies Project

Essentials of Waltham Geography
The major geographic features of Waltham are the Charles River and several large hills. The river runs roughly west to east in the south part of the city. Since the dam was built just below the Moody Street bridge, the western half of the river in Waltham is navigable by boat. The largest body of water visible today, the Cambridge Reservoir, was created by the damming of a brook near the west side of Waltham. Hardy Pond, the only "great pond" in the city, is in the northern area. The highest place in Waltham is atop Prospect Hill, on a point named "Boston Rock", from which the city of Boston is visible on a clear day. Bear Hill is west and south of that point. Main Street enters from the west as Rt. 117, and leaves in the east as Rt. 20. Rt. 20, also known as Weston Street, merges in at the point where Rt. 117 ends. South Street connects at this intersection, known as Banks Square. City Hall was built near the intersection of Main Street and Moody Street, which is the main business street of Waltham. Lexington Street begins near City Hall, and continues north into Lexington. Totten Pond Road begins at Lexington, and proceeds west, and its name changes to Winter Street as it circles behind the reservoir. Trapelo road spans the entire city, starting near the northwest corner, and proceeding into Belmont on the east side. Beaver Street runs east from Lexington along the Beaver Brook, and intersects what is now Bentley College.

The 18th Annual Geography Fair
Saturday November 20th, 2004 at Bridgewater State College The 2004 theme is:
The sounds of culture* This theme allows us to look at the interaction between people and their environment; The sense of place depends on many sensory elements, especially the auditory - natural and human created sounds that define a place. language, music, nature sounds, city sounds, etc. Students are asked to describe and explain places with emphasis on the sounds of that place. This should include maps of where for example certain languages and dialects are spoken, where material for instruments are obtained, etc. All of these features make different places and people so distinctive. And it is this interaction of culture and physical environment that presents us with the mosaic that is our world . It it difficult, and will take quite some time, to do justice to Boston, of course. In the early 1800s, it was the intellectual capital of the U.S. It has one of the finest harbors on the east coast. Originally, it was almost an island, connected to the mainland by "Boston neck", a strip just wide enough for one road (one of the reasons it could hold out so long in its rebellion against the English). Over the years, the neck was widened until it became wider than the "head" attached to it. Part of this filling-in process created the Back Bay. See Whitehill, Boston, A Topographical History

"Mansionization" of Massachusetts
I came upon a new term used in describing urban sprawl - "mansionization." An article in The Boston Globe describes the term mansionization, "In this 'bigger is better' era of SUVs and super-sized meals, Massachusetts residents are living in ever larger homes on bigger lots, even though fewer people live in each house."

As Though We Didn't Feel Guilty Already...
A staggering 98 tons (196,000 pounds) of prehistoric, buried plant material is required to produce each gallon of gasoline we burn in our cars, SUVs, trucks and other vehicles, according to a study conducted at the University of Utah. "Can you imagine loading 40 acres worth of wheat – stalks, roots and all – into the tank of your car or SUV every 20 miles?" asks ecologist Jeff Dukes, whose study will be published in the November issue of the journal Climatic Change Read more in the press release.

GEOGRAPHY AND HISTORY AND THE
MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL CURRICULUM
The integration of Geography and History is a key element of the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks. One cannot achieve a full understanding of history without a sense of place nor understand the essence of place with-out knowledge of how it was shaped over time. Geography is a comprehensive field of knowledge that helps us to identify and analyze the global patterns that shape our lives. When applied to the school curriculum, geography helps to reinforce basic literacy skills and can be integrated into a wide range of subjects including science, foreign languages, and social studies. Many people do not realize how much impact geography has on their everyday lives. It is an essential building block toward understanding world affairs. It is critically important that students understand close relationships between geography and history. THE INSTITUTE The sponsors of the institute are responding to the structure of the Massachusetts Frameworks by offering a unique and exciting five-day summer institute, Hilltowns and Milltowns: Geography and History in the Middle and High School Curriculum. Specifically, the purposes of the institute are to demonstrate:
