City (1990 pop. 70,207), a seat of Essex co., NE Mass., on the Merrimack River; settled 1655, set off from Andover and Methuen 1847, inc. as a city 1853. It is a port of entry. Textiles, clothing, electrical equipment, athletic shoes, and rubber and paper products are manufactured. High-technology industries in the area also contribute to Lawrence's economy. Boston capitalists laid out an industrial town there in 1845 and built a granite dam on the Merrimack River. They also built mills and workers' dwellings, which were soon crowded with laborers, mainly from Europe, and Lawrence became one of the world's greatest centers for woolen textiles. Several disastrous events have occurred there—the collapse and burning of the Pemberton Mill in 1860, when over 500 trapped workers were killed or injured; the tornado of 1890; and the protracted labor strike by the Industrial Workers of the World in 1912. Third Grade - Geography - Lesson 8 - Geography of the New England and Middle Atlantic Colonies Objectives
Recognize that proximity to water influenced the development of cities.
Label the New England and Middle Atlantic colonies on a map. Materials
Classroom-size U. S. map
1 per student
Colonies map (attached) Procedure
Ask the students to recall that the first settlers traveled on ships to reach the New World and formed colonies along the east coast of what is now the United States. Remind the students that the Atlantic coast also had many bays which made it easy for ships to come close to shore. Ask: What is the definition of a bay? (An inlet of the ocean partly surrounded by land.)
Review with the students that two important bays to the colonists were the Chesapeake Bay and the Massachusetts Bay. Have two students locate the bays on the classroom U. S. map. Point out the way the land partly surrounds the water to form the bay.
Remind the students that colonial towns were built close to the water because access to a port was very important. Ask: Why were ports important to the development of a colonial town? (Major towns and cities had to have access to ships bringing people and goods to and from Europe.)
Give a map of the New England and Middle Atlantic Colonies to each student. Ask students to name all the colonial cities located on the Atlantic Ocean or a bay (Boston, MA; Plymouth, MA; Baltimore, MD; Williamsburg, VA; Jamestown, VA). Write the name of the city and the colony on the board as students name them. Remind the students that these cities were important in the development of trade because of their closeness to the ocean.

Following a brief overview of GIS at MIT, the last four sections of this page describe GIS research and related activities; teaching and curricula; facilities and resources; and researchers and staff. Overview of GIS at MIT Currently, there are no degree programs at MIT focused specifically on GIS. However, a number of MIT departmental programs and research labs have significant research and teaching interests that emphasize geospatial analysis and the development and use of GIS technologies. This website focuses on the more extensive efforts without trying to list all the more general IT-related efforts that are clearly relevant (e.g., user interface work at the Media Lab, internet protocol work at the W3C consortium, and computer graphics and distributed computing work at the Lab for Computer Science). Recent decisions have enhanced the Institute-wide scope and coordination of GIS and GIScience efforts. In 1999, the Provost approved hiring a GIS and spatial data specialist to support interdepartmental activities and increased sharing of our geoprocessing infrastructure. In summer 2001, the

The Massachusetts Tree Wardens' and Forester's Association , the oldest professional organization dedicated to arboriculture in the country, was founded in 1913. The organization has embarked on a number of organizational development projects to adapt and strengthen its ability to lead the profession into the next century. Lakshmanan points out that Kenmore Square and the nearby Muddy River would be inundated with water. A downpour in October 1996, for example, caused the Muddy River to overflow and flood the MBTA Green Line tunnels. The water level, at its highest, went all the way up to the ticket booth at Kenmore Station. Service was interrupted for weeks. 25 March 2005

This legislation resonates powerfully with the concerns all parents have for their children, and has enormous political appeal. Unfortunately, most legislatures have given little thought to the problem of how best to design this kind of legislation to protect children. Results from our study suggest that the Massachusetts version of such a statute has not been successful in moving drug-dealing away from schools. The common denominator of these statutes is the enhancement of penalties for drug dealing based on geography. The physical layout of cities and towns in the state and the geographic patterns of drug dealing thus become important factors in determining the impact of the statute. Legislators have made gut judgments about how far they would like to see drug dealing retreat from places frequented by young people, but have rarely, if ever, benefited from data about the physical layout or distribution of dealing in their communities. In our recent Massachusetts study, we used a combination of aerial photography, municipal geographic information systems, commercial street mapping data and hand-held geographic positioning system (GPS) measurements to plot schools, parks and drug dealing incidents in three cities in Massachusetts. The research team started with case files from the local District Attorneys' offices. Based on the police reports in those files, the research team visited more than 400 drug- dealing locations and walked school boundaries with a handheld GPS. We triangulated between that field data and the other available electronic data to derive accurate maps of school zones and drug dealing locations.
