HISTORY OF THE
GEOGRAPHY AND REGIONAL PLANNING DEPARTMENT
AT WESTFIELD STATE COLLEGE
The Geography and Regional Planning Department (GARP) started out as a Geography Department when Westfield State was incorporated as a normal school, or teachers’ training school, in 1839. Geography, during that period, was part of the social science curriculum, which played a role in training future teachers for elementary and secondary education programs. Particularly notable among the geography professors during this era was Dr. Will Seymour Monroe, who taught both geography and psychology at WSC from 1896 to 1904. Professor Monroe expanded the geography curriculum and later, after leaving WSC, became a noted author. After WWII, the number of students in geography courses increased along with the expansion of the number of education majors at WSC. Geography was still primarily a Social Science course supporting the education major, and the geography staff consisted of one or two faculty. However, with the addition of Professor J. E. O’Shea to the WSC staff in 1957, the geography department began to expand over the next few years. In the 1960s several professors joined the Geography Department and added their particular strengths to the curriculum.

    Overview
The primary purpose of this course is to familiarise ourselves with the advancement of ICT (Information and Communications Technologies) and to offer an opportunity to think geographically about information spaces, and thereby, to discuss if and how we could contribute as geographers to the interpretation and evaluation of information spaces represented by the Internet, the Web, cyber cities, and mobile telecommunication networks.
The fast evolving information space forms a new arena for geographical analysis, which enhances our understanding of the structure of digital spaces. Although its geographical structure is not known to us, IT spaces, the World-Wide Web in particular, may cast a significant impact on the urban and socio-economic activities as we become increasingly dependent on information technologies. Assuming that the information space forms a quantitatively measurable entity and that it should be addressed in the geographical context, we combine spatial analysis techniques with GIS technologies to explore the structure of the Web in terms of its node connectivity and investigate how it relates to the real geography.

Although the Puritans came to Massachusetts for religious freedom, they were not tolerant of any other religion than theirs. People such as Anne Hutchinson Roger Williams , and Thomas Hooker left Massachusetts and went South because of the Puritans' lack of religious tolerance. Williams ended up founding the colony of

There are certain kinds of information that youngsters need in order to function adequately as competent members of society. One of those areas is geography. Recent studies, even of college students, show that a surprising number of high school and college students have a remarkably poor understanding of geography-even a reasonable understanding of where major cities and countries are located in relation to one another. Where to begin? Start early with a basic investment of at least four maps that can be hung in your child's room: a map of the world, the USA, your own state, and one of your local region. Check with your local library if you have any difficulty locating the maps you need.
