Gravestones of Our Ancestors
This site is dedicated to my mom (above) and my grandmother, Josephine Burnham Day (on left in picture below), who got me started on the family genealogy in 1981. My husband, Jim, and I are both direct descendants of many prominent early Essex County families. I am in the process of adding all of our direct lines as I research them. I have spent many, many hours verifying and documenting my information, so I am satisfied that all names and dates on my site are correct. I have numbered and footnoted all of my sources on the Jones page; however, this is VERY time consuming, so on most of the other pages I have simply listed my sources at the bottom without linking them to the actual data. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions about my sources. Of course, you should ALWAYS verify new information, no matter where you get it from. Our Family Tree Jim and I are both descendants of many of the first settlers of Essex County, and many of our lines are intertwined. For instance, not only are my mother's Burnhams and my father's Tarrs related through the Andrews', but Jim and I are related through the Allen, Perkins, and Wallis families. I hope you will take some time to visit each of the families represented below. If you have roots in Essex County, chances are you will find some of your own folks here.

Return to City Directories Homepage This guide to Massachusetts city directory records was created to provide genealogists with access to most Massachusetts directories from a single page.
City directories contain information about the location of a person's residence, whether they owned or rented their residence, their profession, and perhaps the names of relatives living at or near the same address. Frequently other information is provided including a death record for the year of the publication, the location of cemeteries, churches and other places important to genealogists. Directories have long been used to help with genealogy research. The Internet has allowed people to share city directory records via web sites. This has brought access to online records which can be searched through various means. Many old city directories are available for free usage on a variety of web sites. Some are available only via the purchase of CD-ROMs via ebay and some commercial organizations which specialize in scanning and making available these resources. Even more directories are available via subscription sites. Searching for directories on a search engine like Google.com

VITAL RECORDS AND LOCAL HISTORIES
Massachusetts vital records are maintained by the town or city, not by the county. Vital records going back to the 17th century are extant for many towns. Many of these records, especially from towns in the eastern part of the state, were published in the early 20th century. Look in the Newberry's card catalog under the name of the town as a subject heading to determine if such a publication is available for the town in which you are interested. Many original town records were also filmed by the Holbrook Research Institute in recent years and are available on microfiche. To determine if the Newberry has such a set for a particular town, check the computer catalog under the name of the town as a subject heading. Town histories can also be important sources for genealogical research. Again, check under the name of the town as a subject heading in both the
