  • Please Note: It appears some standard web sites, such as the USGS: Geographic Names Information System , may be inaccessible. Hopefully, this is temporary, so links to these have not yet been removed. Please be aware that some links on this site may not work due to these changes.

  • When you find ancestors, are you interested in learning more about the history they lived? Do you want to explore new directions to solve the unsolved mystery? What was home and family life like? What did they eat? wear? read? What were the important happenings? Why were the wars fought and who fought them? How in the world did they move about? What is a tythingman anyway? This page is being created, on a volunteer basis, to explore the world of our ancestors who resided in Massachusetts. Through your genealogical research, you have learned something about your ancestors. How do you learn more? How do you solve the unsolved mystery? My answer to both is to learn more about genealogical research by learning more about the history your ancestors lived . After all, isn't genealogy the history of individuals and families?

A site of the Massachusetts USGenWeb Project Welcome to Nantucket County, Massachusetts. Nantucket County comprises the Island of Nantucket and a few outlying smaller islands. The nearest counties are Dukes County on the island of Martha's Vineyard which lies across Muskeget Channel to the west; Barnstable County on Cape Cod is across Nantucket Sound to the north. The Atlantic Ocean lies to the east and south. In 1641 Lord Sterling, a representative of Charles II, deeded the island to Thomas Mayhew and his son, whose family had first settled on Martha’s Vineyard and grazed sheep out on Nantucket. By 1659, the Mayhews sold shares to nine proprietors and by 1700, the island population consisted of approximately 800 Native Americans and 300 European settlers Christopher Hussey was one of the nine purchasers of Nantucket in 1659, and in 1671 sold his land to his sons John and Stephen. The Starbuck and Macy (from Salisbury) families and John Coleman also spent the first winter on Nantucket in1659. John Gardner came to Nantucket in the 1660s and found himself limited by the existing population to one-half a vote. He appealed to the Island's governor in New York and the area was renamed Sherburne after Gardiner's English homestead. This name was used until after the Revolutionary War when the name Nantucket was restored in 1795. Tristram Coffin is considered the patriarch of the island. Berkshire County, Massachusetts History
    Pre-European Settlement
Berkshire County was the winter home of the Mahican (Also known as Mohican) Indians. After selling off much of their lands in the Hudson Valley to the Dutch in New York, Berkshire County (specifically Stockbridge) became their permenent residence.
    The New York Years
Earliest known european settlement of Berkshire County was in 1692 by Dutch settlers from New York in the area of Mount Washington. They were employed as farmers, traders and miners of iron ore for the forge at Ancram (now Copake), NY. A patent for the area was granted by New York in 1705 and was, at that time, known as the Westenhoeck Patent. In 1722, Joseph Parsons and 176 other Hampshire County residents were given permission by Boston to settle in the region in spite of the claims of ownership by New York. These actions set off a long. spordic war between New York and Massachusetts known as the border war or the first anti-rent war.

Published by the New England Historic Genealogical Society, this work contains the vital records of the citizens of Arlington, Massachusetts, from the time of its founding until the year 1850. This work is one volume in a series of books that were published containing the vital records of the towns of Massachusetts, making this series of particular interest to those with ancestors in Massachusetts during this time period.
    Barnstable County Massachusetts 1855 Census

The peninsula forming the southeastern extremity of Massachusetts is known as Cape Cod. Its position earned it the name "the right arm of Massachusetts" because it has its shoulder, elbow, wrist, and hand symbolically poised over the deep, as if beckoning the disputed pilgrims to cross over and rest safely under the palm. Barnstable County covers the entire peninsula. The early settlers were initially farmers, but they later turned to the sea for its bounty. From farmers to sea captains, the population changed as the people found other livelihoods. This database includes the names, ages, occupations, genders, races, places of birth, and addresses for the inhabitants of Barnstable County in 1855, including the towns of Barnstable, Brewster, Chatham, Dennis, Eastham, Falmouth, Harwich and Orleans. This update adds the records for Provincetown.

    Massachusetts Vital Records.
    Birth, Marriage and Death.
"Massachusetts law requires town and city clerks to record all vital events occurring in that town or city."
This system has been in place for the last 300 odd years. Beginning in 1841 however, the state government required copies of each vital record be forwarded to a central state office. This means that basically, two sets of records exist for almost every birth, marriage and death since 1841. Prior to 1841, there was only one set of records. These vital records were generally maintained by a town or city clerk. Each town clerk recorded varying degrees of information as there was no state set wide standard. The result is a haphazard collection of vital records that can sometimes be extremely frustrating to find, read and or copy.
