Students at Taft: As times have changed, so have the school's demographics
WEB EXCLUSIVE Newsweek May 3 - Sean O'Mealia didn't want to go to Taft, a prestigious 115-year-old boarding school in western Connecticut. For starters, his buddies were staying at his public school in Middletown,
N. J. Boarding schools, he'd been warned, were full of snobs. He didn't like the clothes either: ribbon belts and brightly colored chinos left him cold. Four years later, he calls Taft, "a fun school where it's cool to learn" and admits, "I had an antiquated stereotype" of boarding school. O'Mealia could be forgiven for his mistake. For decades, Americans have loved-and loved to hate-boarding schools. In the 50's, Holden Caufield condemned them for being full of "phonies" and "crooks." Hollywood movies like "The Dead Poet's Society" and "School Ties" portrayed them as verdant playgrounds for over-privileged Brahmins. Lately, though, boarding schools are hot. In the past two years, applications at elite schools like the Thacher School in Calif., Andover and Deerfield Academy in Massachusetts are up as much as 10 percent. Other kids don't want to attend the schools, but they want to look like they do. Recently, J. Crew returned to its roots selling the kind of a rainbow flip flops and bright polo shirts rarely seen out side of Kennebunkport and Nantucket.

Parental Authorization
The Massachusetts Task Force found two letters sent to parents describing the nutrition studies and seeking their permission. The first letter, a form letter signed by the superintendent of the school, is dated November 1949. The letter refers to a project in which children at the school will receive a special diet "rich" in various cereals, iron, and vitamins and for which "it will be necessary to make some blood tests at stated intervals, similar to those to which our patients are already accustomed, and which will cause no discomfort or change in their physical condition other than possibly improvement." The letter makes no mention of any risks or the use of a radioisotope. Parents or guardians are asked to indicate that they have no objection to their son's participation in the project by signing an enclosed form. The second letter, dated May 1953, we quote in its entirety:

Staff Reporter of THE WALL STREET JOURNAL Boarding school was a family tradition for Clay Gibson. As a teen, he followed his brother, uncle and great uncle to Baylor School, a 112-year-old private school in Chattanooga, Tenn., whose 670 acres overlook the Tennessee River. Thirty years later and now an Atlanta law-firm partner, Mr. Gibson is a Baylor trustee and easily lists the elite school's many attractions. But when time came to send his three children to high school, Mr. Gibson broke with tradition: He sent his two sons and daughter to a private day school. He loves Baylor, he says, but he and his wife never seriously considered it. "We're very involved in our kids' education and life, and we wanted to stay involved on a day-to-day basis," Mr. Gibson says. "We wanted them to stay in our home and enjoy that opportunity." Mr. Gibson's decision is part of broader shift plaguing schools like Baylor: While enrollment at private day schools is booming, boarding schools are seeing little or no growth. Boarding-school enrollment stands at 39,000 for the 2004-2005 school year, and has barely budged in five years, says the

Abused and Neglected Children in Foster Care
Distressing statistics show that nationally over half a million children and youth were in state foster care systems in 1996.[201] Since 1997, there has been a 90 percent increase in American children in foster care while the number of licensed family foster homes has decreased.[202] Child welfare agencies find it increasingly difficult to recruit and retain foster homes. There are barely 130,000 foster homes available at present and as many as 40 percent of foster families quit in their first year Massachusetts is far more likely than most other states to remove children from their homes. In July 1997, there were 11,957 Massachusetts children living in substitute care, e.g. foster homes, residential programs, or adolescent shelters.[205] In 1995, 65 of every 1,000 maltreated children were removed from their Massachusetts homes

Boarding Schools
Beginning in the nineteenth century, boarding schools played a fundamental role in the programs designed by the U.S. government to foster the assimilation of native peoples into the mainstream of American society. Reformers and politicians who favored the policy of reservation allotment also advanced the concept of placing Indian children in residential schools where they would speak English, learn a vocation, and practice farming. Advocates of boarding schools argued that industrial training, in combination with several years of isolation from family, would diminish the influence of tribalism on a new generation of American Indians. For fifty years after the first federally administered residential school was established in 1879 at Carlisle, Pennsylvania, thousands of Native American children and youth were sent to live, work, and be educated in the schools. Prior to Carlisle, most American Indians had little experience with the boarding-school concept. Some had attended mission schools, and three unique institutions had developed earlier in the century: the Choctaw Academy and the Cherokee Male and Female Seminaries. The Choctaw Academy in Kentucky, founded in 1825, was a male boarding school that Indian and white children attended. The academy was funded by proceeds from Choctaw land cessions in the Southeast during the 1820s. By 1851, the Cherokees in Oklahoma had opened male and female seminaries near Tahlequah to educate members of their nation. Cherokee students studied a curriculum that was patterned after that of Mount Holyoke Seminary in Massachusetts.

Nestled in the heart of Old Deerfield, Bement offers a unique experience for its relatively small boarding community to live in historic homes that have been converted to dormitories. The school's mission to live and learn as a family is demonstrated by a close-knit community that lives in a supportive atmosphere in the dorms, has "family style" meals together, and explores the wide range of cultural and natural opportunities in the area, including opportunities to travel to Boston, New York City, and other parts of New England. Many of the dorm parents also work as teachers and coaches allowing students to build relationships with their dorm parents in the classrooms and on the playing fields as well as in the dorms.
