Private vs. Public Schools: What's the Difference?
(Page 1 of 3) Your goal is to find a school that will meet your child's needs. But how do you choose between a public school and a private school? By Victoria Thorp and Jesse James, GreatSchools.net Staff
Cost
Public schools cannot charge tuition. They are funded through federal, state and local taxes. When you pay your taxes, you are paying for your child's education and the education of other children in your community. Private schools cost money. Private schools do not receive tax revenues, but instead are funded through tuition, fundraising, donations and private grants. According to the National Association of Independent Schools, the median tuition for private day schools in the United States is close to $12,000 for grades 1 to 3, $13,000 for grades 6 to 8 and $15,000 for grades 9 to 12. The median tuition for boarding schools is $12,000 for grades 1 to 3, $27,000 for grades 6 to 9, and $28,000 for grades 9 to 12. Parochial schools generally charge somewhat less.

Gay policy finds home in dorms By Sandy Coleman, Globe Staff When the legendary, ivy-covered Phillips Academy in Andover approved a new policy allowing gay faculty members to live in student dormitories with their partners as house counselors, Bill Constantine applauded. But Constantine, a parent from New York, admits that the topic made him hesitate when it was first raised. Although at home he preaches tolerance and understanding of all kinds of people, with his daughter, Claire, an 11th-grader at Andover, the issue seemed more complex. ''Is a same-sex couple the right role model in the dormitory?'' Constantine said he wondered. ''Is this a role model you want? Does this encourage young kids to consider a same-sex relationship as a course they should follow? I don't know that it does or doesn't. The thought just went through my head.'' Constantine's contemplation was shared by officials at Andover, where the new policy takes effect in the fall, and at least three other New England boarding schools that have quietly made gay faculty counselors and their partners at home in the dorms. Andover had notified parents of the policy.

Therapeutic boarding schools The Dallas Morning News recently ran an informational piece The author paints a deliberately vague rosy picture of the therapeutic boarding school, framing the body of the article with an anecdote about an anonymous family that sent its pseudonymous daughter to an unnamed school, and had a positive experience with it. He followed it up with a piece devoted to the Academy at Swift River, a therapeutic boarding school in western Massachusetts, and the paper paired it with a how-to guide for parents who want to locate a school for their child. I'd love to learn more specifics, both about what these schools do well and what they don't. You don't have to look very far to discover that the picture does not seem to be as rosy as the Dallas Morning News paints it. At present, for example, Majestic Ranch, a therapeutic boarding school in Utah, is being sued by a parent who alleges that her son was physically and emotionally abused while he was enrolled there; this is not the first time the school has faced abuse allegations, and the individual named in the parent's suit has a prior conviction for assault. Last night, upstate New York's Academy at Ivy Ridge was the scene of a

Public schools
All cities and towns in Massachusetts are required to provide public education starting with kindergarten, and each city and town has its own public school system. These public schools are funded in large part by their own communities and are usually governed by local school committees. Because of this local authority, there can be significant differences among school systems. Information, including school profiles, is also available from the Massachusetts Department of Education, at 800-297-0002 and

Boarding Schools Nurture Low-Income Students
By Jay Mathews Washington Post Staff Writer
Tuesday, September 21, 2004; Page A08 Lynnette Blackmon liked the small classes and energetic teachers at Maya Angelou Public Charter School in the District, but she was often hours late. "I had a big tardy issue," said the tall, slender 17-year-old. Most schools try to persuade students to get out of bed in the morning by lowering their grades or giving them detention when they don't, but Maya Angelou is one of a small but growing number of schools that have a different approach to the problem. They invite teenagers who need extra help to live in school quarters.
Maya Angelou residential students study together at night. The school is one of a few D.C. institutions offering the advantages and support of boarding schools to low-income students.

INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS
Revised: January 2005 Independent schools vary widely in size, structure, and philosophy and serve students from a variety of economic, religious, and cultural backgrounds. Some are progressive and innovative, some are conservative and traditional; some are day schools, others are boarding. They can be single sex or coeducational, sectarian or nonsectarian. Independent schools share a commitment to excellence in all aspects of the education experience. Unlike public schools that are part of a large governmental system, independent schools are autonomous institutions, governed by a board of trustees and supported by private funds. Exchange with Brooks School, Andover, Massachusetts In its fourth year Glenalmond's annual exchange with Brooks School, Massachusetts, continues to thrive. "In establishing a strong and growing link our two schools are forging their own special relationship," says Glenalmond co-ordinator and founder of the programme, John Wright. "For those involved it is a unique experience." For Victoria Crawford (Lothian) the exchange brought six weeks at one of New England's top boarding schools, immersed in another culture and educational system. In turn, two of Brooks finest, Katerina Markos and Brodie McDearmid, were welcomed into the fabric of Coll life.
Packing up her belongings and memories in readiness to return home she was asked what it was that she would miss most about Brooks? "The people," declared Victoria, testifying to the enduring value of the Glenalmond - Brooks exchange.

All Copper Canyon Academy therapists are licensed by the Arizona Board of Behavioral Health Services Individual Therapy
  • Students at Copper Canyon Academy meet weekly for one hour with their assigned therapist. Therapists also reserve additional time each week for any students who need additional time. The therapists at Copper Canyon Academy are all Masters level and licensed by the Arizona Board of Behavioral Health Services with a wide range of training, skills and approaches. The primary approach is cognitive/behavioral therapy. Some of the therapists have extensive training and backgrounds in working with attachment disorder, depression, substance abuse, victims of sexual abuse and trauma, as well as training in Gestalt therapy, Reality Therapy and Rational Emotive Therapy.
Group Therapy
  • Each therapist has a caseload around twelve students. This group of students meets several hours a week with their assigned therapist. The purpose of this group is for the students to further explore their issues in a supportive environment of their peers. Adolescents are much more driven by their need for peer acceptance than by any concern for an adults' opinion. In the same way that a negative peer group can lead a teen astray, a positive peer culture makes a significant impact on a teen's desire to do the right thing.
