January 28, 2005 This spring, the Experimental Study Group is offering a new six-unit undergraduate seminar in which participants will explore alternative approaches to college education, study examples of alternative college programs currently established in the U.S. and, for a final project, custom-design an entire college program to support students' individual learning styles. The Alternative Education Seminar (SP.249) is the first of its kind in the Experimental Study Group (ESG), the MIT undergraduate program already known for its innovative, interactive freshmen seminars. A joint MIT-Wellesley course, Alternative Education will be team-taught by faculty from both institutions, with guest speakers from these and other schools. Sessions will be held at MIT during the first half of the term and at Wellesley the second half. The seminar is open to all MIT and Wellesley students. Patricia Christie, a lecturer in ESG, and Kenneth Hawes (S.B. 1968), an assistant professor of education at Wellesley College, are co-leaders of the new seminar.

AGAINST SCHOOL AS PRESENTLY CONSTITUTED There is a technical high school in Turner's Falls, in western Massachusetts, which has a cooking program (among a wide variety of training options) that teaches kids how to buy, prepare and serve lunch on weekdays to whoever comes in to eat - and also offers a display of bakery goods to be purchased - in a restaurant setting, and at a moderate price. It is very popular. I have driven over there for lunch on a number of occasions. It's a very good experience. Except for the ones cooking and serving the food, the kids are free at lunchtime and just get to hang out with each other. Around Christmastime, many of them have tables set up in the hallways at which they sell various goods made in their classes. I can only characterize the whole feeling tone of this big bunch of kids as downright unAmerican - at least if compared with most high school groups under the same circumstances. No teachers monitoring, no kids teasing each other, no excessive flirting or harassing, no frenetic dashing about, no smoking in sheltered corners outside the building - just kids strolling about in small groups, chatting with each other or selling their products, those from the greenhousing group offering sturdy plants - and being very knowledgeable about their management - along the corridor, some studying in a sunny corner - well, you get the picture. These kids love what they're doing, and they are

Making it in the biotech business
Virginia Gewin
  • Virginia Gewin is a freelance science writer based in Portland, Oregon.
  • For comments, or story ideas, please contact Naturejobs at naturejobseditor@naturedc.com Being good at research isn't enough for success in the biotech business. Virgina Gewin finds out where to get the other skills you need. But a science education and experience in an academic lab don't provide many chances to learn about business. You may be an expert in recombinant DNA, but the business world is about making a return on investment. Although the thought of more study is less than appealing to most new PhDs, understanding business jargon and a businessperson's view of the world are critical in making the transition. Top of page Ivory Tower to Office Tower "Scientists often underestimate the importance of business skills," says Hamid Bouchikhi, chairman of the Entrepreneurship Innovation and Small Business Network at the ESSEC Business School in Paris, France. Unfortunately, good ideas don't necessarily translate into good business. "There are plenty of stories about scientists going on to lead successful companies, but nobody talks about the many companies that failed because scientists didn't make good managers," says Shreefal Mehta, research assistant professor of biotechnology management at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York.

    IONS YOUTH CONFERENCE 2005
IONS Youth Conference provides rich, full and exciting programs for students of every age. These youth programs offer growth-oriented, expansive activities such as art expression, dream sharing, movement, facilitated group work, as well as special presentations from our amazing panel of conference presenters. We group the youth by age as follows: college Questers; high school Pathfinders; middle school Explorers; and grade school Magicians. THE QUESTERS (for college freshmen through age 24, facilitated by Luisah Teish). The four-day intensive Questers program is for young adults interested in self-discovery, clarity of life purpose, and creative exploration. In its third year, the program allows participants to explore growth issues in a safe, supportive environment. Rich dialogues between Questers and invited elders helps improve intergenerational relationships. Questers are invited to take advantage of keynote speakers, selected workshops, and performances from the main conference. THE PATHFINDERS (for high school students, facilitated by Bret Stephenson and Daniel Arriaga). The Pathfinders program includes content from leaders and presentations of the main conference along with facilitated group work.

MASSACHUSETTS-Evaluating Cops and Kids From "Commonwealth of Massachusetts 1997 Cops and Kids Grant Program Final Report," Massachusetts Executive Office of Public Safety.
CONTACT PERSON: Diana Brensilber Problem Statement However, with regard to substance abuse and violence, as well as building relationships between youth and police, the study found that these issues were not being reinforced for middle school-aged youth. The study recommended that the Secretary of Public Safety implement new anti-drug and alcohol programs that had a community-wide focus and were integrated with existing substance abuse education efforts being taught in the school. It also recommended that new programs, geared to middle school- and high school-aged youth, should include a violence prevention component. The need for positive programming for middle school youth in Massachusetts was further strengthened following a February 1997 incident in Woburn, Massachusetts, where 14 children overdosed on muscle relaxants at a community dance. Looking for a quick high, the middle school-aged youth swallowed handfuls of the prescription drug Baclofen, unconcerned with the physical dangers that their actions posed. Of the youth who took the pills, all were unable to identify any viable consequences that they contemplated before ingesting between 10-55 pills. All of the children involved spoke of the need to belong to a group as a reason for participating in the event.
