A year-round private alternative school in Salem, MA, for kids from infancy through grade eight, our school is committed to true, lasting, comprehensive reform in education. However, also central to the idea of reform for us is the notion of access. Open all day and year round, we strive to serve the broadest possible base from several communities near our location in Salem, MA, providing an environment diverse in language, culture, class, race and learning style. Description:
We use a very strong base of language and mathematical/logical skills building, using individualized planning and manipulatives as much as possible. However, upon this base we set the larger spectrum of human intelligences, trying to nurture social/emotional, cognitive and physical growth through a wide variety of activities. Our heated, inground pool serves as an excellent teaching forum for physical fitness; additionally, we pursue art and music woven throughout the curriculum (a separate published paper on our approach to music is available by contacting the school), drama and video production, an intergenerational exchange, ceramics, gardening, papermaking, and so on.

Mission Philosophy Student Selection Admission ... Contacts Mission The mission of MT TOM ACADEMY is to serve the students of the participating high schools who might benefit from an alternative, high school environment. The program offers instruction in high school and college subjects to students who have been unsuccessful in the traditional high school setting. The program will identify the strengths, talents and unique abilities of its participating students. Support will be provided to each individual student in an effort to develop a clear pathway to the completion of a high school diploma or a General Educational Diploma (G.E.D.). Success will be measured by the individual student’s acceptance into a college program or placement into an appropriate job setting. Philosophy All students can learn and should be given an opportunity to learn in a setting that focuses on their strengths. Students can succeed when learning takes place in an open and diverse environment that challenges them in a nonthreatening and supportive manner. Learning should proceed at a pace which is appropriate for the individual learner. Modern technological tools and methods of education will provide opportunities for remediation and individualized enrichment. Academic learning will be reinforced by real life work-based experiences.

Gates Foundation gives $9.9 million to alternative schools
By Meredith Harkel Published: Thursday, March 6, 2003 In an effort to improve national graduation rates, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation granted $9.9 million to Boston area organizations last Wednesday, as part of a larger $31 million national grant to assist in the creation or improvement of alternative high schools across the nation.
According to Weisstein, the program reaches beyond high school learning through internships, community service and college courses.
Cambridge-based YouthBuild USA received $5.4 million to transform 23 high schools and create 10 new alternative high schools, according to a YouthBuild press release.
YouthBuild programs help undereducated people ages 16 to 24 work toward their GED or high school diploma while learning to build housing for homeless and low-income people through a partnership with Habitat for Humanity.

Community Service Learning and School-to-Career Initiatives: Case Studies of School, District and Community-Based Models
In 1997, the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) published Connecting Service Learning and School-to-Career Initiatives based on the work of CCSSO's Service Learning Project, directed by Barbara Gomez . The Service Learning Project convened a series of meetings with school-to-career and service learning experts to discuss where and how connections between the these two national strategies could be made. The Project also conducted a national study of 12 exemplary school and community-based models where service learning and school-to-career programs are already connected and coordinated. The following examples from the CCSSO study demonstrate the various appporoaches school districts, schools and communities have taken to connect service learning and school-to-careers. PUTNAM VOCATIONAL TECHNICAL HIGH SCHOOL IN SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS Dr. Ann Southworth, Principal, Putnam Vocational Technical High School describes her school before service learning and school-to-work activities began as a school in danger of losing accreditation, wrought with violence and gang activity, with low attendance (70 percent) and high drop out rates (25 percent). Now teachers and students at Putnam are actively engaged in a large number of service and school-to-career activities and the school is safe; non-violent; has students in the National Honors Society and Advanced Placement courses; has a 93 percent attendance rate and a 6 percent dropout rate; and has students engaged, learning more, working in teams, respecting themselves and wanting to stay in school.

Boston Public Schools (BPS) , local businesses and intermediary organizations. Central to the visit was learning how school-to-careers (STC) has been integrated to broader education reform efforts within BPS and its 128 schools. Participant comments on education reform initiatives:
  • Leadership is critical to initiating reform, but the buy-in of all staff and students is necessary for any reform to establish lasting and positive change. Maintaining high standards for all students increases the likelihood of their success. Money is criticalfor professional development, for more teachers and for school improvement. Professional development is an important element in improving education. After-school activities are an effective way of connecting young people to other institutions and individuals in their communities. Broader regional or state-wide coordinating committees can be effective in addressing challenging areas such as standards and assessment.
Participant comments on school-to-careers:
  • STC is a powerful pedagogical tool for establishing real change in schools.

Alternative Schools Education
With the quality of most public schools dwindling as a result of increased enrollment and decreased funding, many parents seek alternative schools to educate their children. Effective alternatives include private schools whose focus is a military style of discipline and education. Military schools provide cadets with the traditional college prep curriculum found in public schools, but the quality of teaching often exceeds that found in public school. Since most military schools are also a boarding school, many times the teachers are fully dedicated to the students and can offer extra academic assistance. In addition to a quality education, cadets can expect to have organized daily study time to ensure they complete their assignments and keep from falling behind. Many parents with troubled teens think that the structure and discipline taught in military boarding schools is just what their child needs, but there are actually

All states require teachers to have some form of certification before they are hired. In Massachusetts , as in an increasing number of states, this is called provisional certification because public school teachers are regularly required to renew their certification. In Massachusetts A number of states have programs in place to enable people with only a BA to obtain teaching jobs while pursuing their provisional certification (e.g. California , New Jersey, New York , North Carolina; Resident Teacher Program in Baltimore: 410-545-3574). Candidates have to meet certain basic standards and agree to complete the regular certification process while simultaneously teaching in a classroom. Most fields in suburban schools do not have a shortage of eligible candidates for openings. In most cases urban and rural school systems seek candidates with only a BA and no provisional certification.

Economics - Master of Arts
Economics students at Roosevelt University may study for either the B.A. or M.A. degree in economics. Economics at Roosevelt University goes beyond the conventional economics that is taught at most universities in the United States and presents students with economic analysis from the perspective of alternative schools of thought. Roosevelt is one of the few universities in the United States where students can study economics from Institutionalist, Post Keynesian, and Marxist points of view, in addition to mainstream Neoclassical and Keynesian points of view. Currently, graduate programs in Economics are dominated by very conservative faculty and curriculum. Roosevelt is one of the few Universities in the United States to provide students with an opportunity to study alternative schools of thought. M.A. students at Roosevelt University may study economics from Post Keynesian, Institutionalist, and Marxist points of view, as well as from the more conventional Keynesian and Neoclassical views. The MA program is designed for students whose career goals include: (i) graduate studies preparing for the Ph.D. degree;
