Introducing the Boston Public Schools 2005
A Guide for Parents and Students
The Boston Public Schools offer a variety of academic, social, and cultural experiences that is hard to match anywhere – and each of our 144 schools is different. Some are big, with more than 1,000 students, and some are small, with fewer than 200 students. Some are old (Boston Latin School, founded in 1635) and some are new (Mildred Avenue Middle School, New Boston Middle School, and Orchard Gardens K-8 School). And watch for seven new, small high schools opening in September 2005 – four at the West Roxbury Education Complex (formery West Roxbury High School); and three at the Hyde Park Education Complex (formerly Hyde Park High School). Nineteen of our schools are “pilot schools,” offering innovations such as non-traditional school hours and new approaches to learning and school management. There are pilot schools at all levels – elementary, middle, and high school. Most of our elementary schools are for kindergarten-grade 5; but we also have schools just for early learners through grade 1 and a growing number of kindergarten-grade 8 schools. And we are opening new K1 classrooms to get more of our four-year-olds off to a great start. High school students may choose from among 21 citywide high schools, including several with special themes such as technology and public service. In addition, high school students may apply for the three “exam” schools and nine other schools with special application requirements.

MINT participants come from all walks of life. Business professionals, scientists, social workers, lawyers, engineers, doctors, retired military personnel, and recent college graduates have all made successful career transitions to the classroom with the assistance of this program. Regardless of the differences in their professional backgrounds, MINT participants are united by a desire to make a rapid entry into the classroom where they can use their experience to affect dramatic gains in student achievement. African-American, Latino, Native American and Asian-American candidates are especially needed to reflect the population of students we serve in our urban schools.

The U.S. school system was modeled after German schools created in the 1800's for the express purpose of producing obedient soldiers and factory workers (This is true! I've read it in many different good sources). The German system was extremely successful in achieving its goal in Germany and was therefore copied by other countries, including the U.S. The great American tycoons and Robber Barons were big supporters of the German system in America since they wanted literate but obedient factory workers. Our schools are operated pretty much the same way today in the 1990's as they were back when Thomas Edison was kicked out for being "addled." Creativity and independent thought and action were discouraged because such traits were problematic in a war or a factory. Today these traits interfere with our cookie cutter, mass production educational system; a bureaucratic system which is unable to change itself. "Somewhere between the ages of eleven and fifteen, the average child begins to suffer from an atrophy, the paralysis of curiosity and the suspension of the power to observe. The trouble I should judge to lie with the schools." - Thomas Edison.

Your school may contain mercury and other hazardous materials that have been used in the past or may still be used for teaching and other purposes. Hazardous materials can be found in many areas, including science labs, art rooms, maintenance areas, nurse’s offices and home economics rooms. They may be dangerous because of their toxic, flammable or reactive properties. If these materials are being handled, stored or disposed of improperly, they can pose a risk to students, staff and the environment. Mercury in particular is a persistent and toxic pollutant that accumulates in the environment, in wildlife and in humans. Lowered intelligence, impaired hearing and poor coordination are some of the effects in children with elevated mercury levels. While the most significant route of exposure to mercury is through the consumption of contaminated fish, breathing vapor from spilled liquid mercury is also a significant route of exposure. This could occur at schools.  Accidental mercury spills and breakages have proven expensive to clean up, in some cases, costing tens of thousands of dollars.

http://www.haven.net/edge/council/miller.htm
Public Education, Alternative
Schools, and Democracy
Ron Miller T he cultural turbulence of the 1960s and early 1970s sparked the beginning of a vibrant new movement for "alternative" education. A flurry of passionate and visionary books by A.S. Neill, John Holt, Herbert Kohl, Jonathan Kozol, and other outspoken critics inspired thousands of people to think differently about the nature and purpose of education. By 1972 hundreds of "free schools" and experimental public school programs were founded, and within a few years more, the growing homeschooling movement offered another alternative to families. Public education, which had been revered by generations of Americans as a pillar of our democratic society, was now seen by many as a threat to democracy.
T he roots of this disillusionment went deeper than 1960s protest movements, however. Although most Americans had supported the institution of public schooling, they have argued over its goals from the very beginning, and every generation has seen massive efforts to reform schools in some way. We have never been entirely satisfied with public education because different elements of society expect education to serve purposes that are in conflict with each other, and public schools have been weakened by the compromises that have been required.
