Learning from Tarzan
Steven M. Cohn
Steven Cohn is a doctoral student in ecopsychology at the Pacifica Institute in Carpenteria California, near Santa Barbara. He has completed a dissertation titled The Destruction of the Forest and its Impact on Soul as Informed by Indigenous Peoples. In this essay, he tells how he awoke to the mysteries of the rainforest in the most unlikely of places: at Saturday matinees in a Newton Iowa movie house. Like many of us in the urban industrial societies, he first discovered the primitive in the romanticized imagery of our popular culture in this case Hollywood's Tarzan. He has since gone on to travel the rainforests of the world, where he has studied the surviving forest people under the increasingly lethal pressure of global industrialism. His dissertation was largely inspired by a remarkable visionary moment that may have brought him closer to the indigenous experience of nature than any of his travels. I SPENT MY boyhood exploring the woods near my Iowa home. With only my dog as a companion, I wandered for hours along a twisting path that ran beside a gentle, rock-filled creek. I got to know the trees and stones, the animals and insects, the colors of the seasons, the filtered bright of day, and the sometimes frightening totality of forest night.

The Mission Map

Paper IX: Early Maps of East Africa The first available map was published in a church-sponsored jounal 'The Church Missionary Intelligencer', No 1, Vol 1, (May ). It was this publication that announced to an incredulous world the existence of "Kilimanjaro, covered with eternal snow." This map does not attemp to portray any of the country lying to the west of Kilimanjaro, so Ngorongoro and the Serengeti do not appear. The whole area is designated "Wandorobo, a very poor people despised and maltreated by all tribes around".

Kenya Kenya is often described as having everything that is beautiful in Africa within her borders. Abundant wildlife and birdlife living free; outstanding scenic beauty of the rolling savannas, the peace of the desert regions of the north, the majestic highlands and glaciated peaks of Mt Kenya; the grandeur of the Great Rift Valley and the allure of white coral beaches. Kenya overwhelms all who visit her. Time spent in this country can be one of the most rewarding travel experiences of one's life. Since gaining independence in 1963, Kenya has experienced considerable growth and prosperity relative to other developing African nations. By focusing on tourism, Kenya has been able to successfully market its national parks and beautiful coast in a way that allows visitors to experience this region of East Africa while contributing to the country's growth. Kenya offers an array of opportunities for travel, wildlife viewing, and cultural experiences. With an immense network of national parks that include a variety of terrain, Kenya arguably stands as one of the top destinations in Africa. Although Kenya lies on the equator, it boasts a variety of landscapes including a tropical coast, grassy plains, desert, and mountains. A fine example of Kenya's wildlife can be found right outside it's largest city in Nairobi National Park. In the South lies the Masai Mara Game Reserve, Kenya's most reputable reserve and Amboseli National Park, which sits at the foot of Mt. Kilimanjaro. Aberdare National Park and Samburu and Shaba National Reserve are situated in the central region, also the home of Mt. Kenya 17,058 ft, Africa's second highest mountain. The Laikipia region is home to many large ranches on a high plateau between desert and mountain in the northwest. Tsavo East and West National Parks are less frequented by visitors and lies between Nairobi and the coast. Other highlights include the Rift Valley Lakes, Meru National Park, and the Indian Ocean Coast.

Indigenous peoples demand rights to land at UN forum
KUALA LUMPUR (AFP) Feb 11, 2004
A group of indigenous peoples Wednesday urged a major UN environment conference here to respect their rights to ancestral lands while planning regulations on natural resources. The International Indigenous Forum on Biodiversity (IIFB) said unilateral declarations on protected areas had in some countries led to the forced resettlement of indigenous tribes. This in turn meant the loss of sustainable traditional practices and knowledge. Violations are rampant in Africa, where an estimated half a million indigenous peoples have been displaced, and in Asia, South America and Europe, where national laws recognising indigenous rights are absent or weak, IIFB officials said. They were speaking on the sidelines of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) conference, which has drawn some 2,000 government officials, scientists and activists to the Malaysian capital. "It is unacceptable for protected areas to be established on our land and ancestral territories without prior consent because it leads to forced displacement of our people, the loss of sacred sites and culture, and contributes to impoverishment," said Sinfasi Makelo Adrien from Congo. For instance, he said, indigenous pygmies in Congo had been expelled without compensation from forests that had been gazetted as protected parks.

Strict Control of Foreign Company Access to Indigenous Lands
During the morning meeting, the Forum concluded its discussion on economic and social development, with speakers highlighting the need for governments to recognize indigenous rights over their land and natural resources, and to compensate them for any destruction.  They also stressed that indigenous peoples should design, implement and evaluate their own development programmes, according to their needs, aspirations and cultural values.
Other participants applauded the decade for indigenous peoples, which had brought their concerns to international attention, and called on the Forum to declare the coming decade an indigenous one as well.  They also highlighted the importance of information and shared experiences in strengthening democracy and fostering economic growth, recommending that the Forum develop a mechanism to spread information to indigenous communities.
Also speaking at the morning meeting were the Special Ambassador for the World Summit on the Information Society, and a member of the Commission on Sustainable Development.

June 28, 2004 Peter ole Mankura, a Masai pastor from Kenya, took one look at the Amish farmer milking his cow and exclaimed, "They are our brothers!" Ole Mankura is one of 15 Masai tribespeople from Kenya who recently visited the United States. During three weeks of shuttle diplomacy, the Masai cattle herders squeezed in a trip to an Amish farm in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, where they found their brethren. "I never thought there were people like that in America," said ole Mankura. "They didn't have electricity or automobiles, only horses and buggies. And they have a lot of cows, just like the Masai." Later, the group represented the Masai tribe at the United Nations Forum on Indigenous Issues in New York. There, they found that most indigenous groups face similar challenges as the Masai: poor education, inadequate health services, shrinking land, and a lack of water. Late rains and a lack of access to water are taxing the Masai's well-being and livelihood in a number of lowland Kenyan districts.

Now, in celebration of their long collaboration, Fisher and Beckwith ( photo ) have published a new National Geographic book, Faces of Africa. Photo Gallery One and Photo Gallery Two . Fisher: Carol was shooting for her book on the Masai and I was photographing for my book Africa Adorned in different parts of the continent. My brother was running hot-air-balloon flights over Masai country and invited Carol for a balloon ride on her birthday. One thousand feet into the air he looked into her eyes and said, "I'd like you to meet my sister," appreciating how much we had in common.

Number 6: Sustainable Development Part 2 Contents: INTRODUCTION While the African continent faces many of the same problems which trouble its northern neighbours, these problems are compounded by African's closeness to their natural environment. Poverty, overcrowding, pollution, soil degradation, over- and under development;what sets these apart in Africa is the intensity with which they affect a continent already stretched to its survival limits. In Voices from Africa 5, African authors from a variety of backgrounds expressed their own visions of their continent's march towards sustainable development. This volume, the sixth in the series, takes a further look at the environmental state of Africa and the continent's attempts not to stray from sustainable development despite crushing constraints. The book's first article explains how, to deal with managing the environment, Ghana has set up a framework, the National Environmental Policy. Mike Anane examines how his country is working to come to grips with its legacy of environmental destruction and its future of sustainable development. He looks at the birth of the environmental movement in Ghana, and the government's environmental role. Part of the problem, he says, is lack of environmental awareness.
