Melanie Hunter Deputy Managing Editor (CNSNews.com) - A federal judge Thursday issued a temporary restraining order against the Montgomery County, Md. school board banning the implementation of a controversial sex education program. This comes after a legal group, working on behalf of the program's critics, filed suit against the school. The Liberty Counsel, which filed the lawsuit on behalf of Citizens for a Responsible Curriculum and Parents and Friends of Ex-Gays and Gays (PFOX), applauded U.S. District Court Judge Alexander Williams, Jr.'s decision, calling it "a huge victory for parents and students."

Ritalin Use In Maryland Schools Lowest For Minorities, Highest For Special Education
Nearly three percent of Maryland public school students receive medication, most commonly the methylphenidate trademarked Ritalin, during school hours for treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), according to a Maryland State Department of Education-supervised survey of school nurses. Published in the September issue of Pediatrics, the findings note significant disparities in the treatment rate for minority children and a concentrated use of ADHD medications among children receiving special education services. The Maryland General Assembly's Legislative Task Force for the Study of the Use of Methylphenidate and Other Drugs in School Children mandated the survey over concerns for ADHD prescription practices. The study findings, "Stimulant Treatment in Maryland Public Schools," represent the largest survey of its kind and the only published school assessment of medication treatment for ADHD to cover an entire state. Lead author Daniel Safer, M.D., adjunct associate professor of pediatrics and psychiatry at the Johns Hopkins Children's Center, draws particular attention to the finding that grade school African-American, Hispanic, and Asian students receive medication for ADHD at approximately half the rate of Caucasian students. The racial disparity increases with age so that by high school, the medication rate for African-American students is only one-fifth that for Caucasians.

Welcome to New Dominion - Let us take you on a tour.
Located in the mountains of western Maryland, New Dominion School of Maryland provides residential treatment care for boys 11-17 years of age. Established in 1980, New Dominion School assists teenagers in taking positive control of their lives, realizing their self-worth, developing self confidence and motivation to succeed both socially and academically. Operating on a year round basis, the program is structured around a natural environment that is well-disciplined, nurturing, optimistic, and conducive to bringing out the fullest potential of each youth. Treatment and education are interrelated. As a student builds self confidence and problem solving skills, he learns to take responsibility for himself and his education.
    Program Description
Within the framework of New Dominion's outdoor treatment program, intervention is based on a group process problem-solving model. Students' difficulties in relating to others are not diagnosed and treated in isolation from their daily actions. Instead, problems are dealt with on the spot as they occur. Group meetings are held at any time during the day when a problem arises. In addition, there are regular evening group sessions. During group meetings, students receive the help and support of their group to learn more acceptable behavior, to express emotions appropriately, and to resolve problems productively. Motivation on the part of the student is high because he is meeting primary needs and is experiencing both the positive and negative results of his behavior immediately or soon after his actions.

The women profiled here have distinguished themselves time and time and time again. That’s three “times.” During the ten years that The Daily Record has been honoring Maryland’s Top 100 Women, literally thousands of nominations have been submitted. The awardees seen here have been chosen an astounding three times, earning themselves a spot in the Circle of Excellence and ending their eligibility for future Top 100 Women awards.
    Class of 2005
Each of this year’s Circle of Excellence honorees were asked to respond to the following questions: What person or event has said the most to you personally about equal opportunity for women in the workplace and in the community? When did the event happen, and was it proof to you that more work needs to be done for equality or that there is already parity for both men and women in business and social spheres?
