  • Inservice training for library media specialists, teachers, and public and academic librarians
Anyone living in Maryland can board Sailor and take an electronic cruise, thanks to a project launched by Maryland's library community to provide free Internet access to state residents. It began two years ago with 15 librarians and technicians who were interested in more effectively sharing library resources. They developed a plan to connect the state's libraries for resource sharing and Internet access. Interest spread and some 125 people from the library community became involved in all aspects of the project, from marketing and grants development to training and assessment. Included in the initial group was a library automation specialist from the University of Maryland, who brought the idea to computer experts at the university. The institution agreed to extend its telecommunication system to the library community and offered to pilot the Sailor Gopher. The university continues to provide encouragement and technical support, including a helpline, for Maryland educators. The University of Maryland operates a bulletin board, K-12 Community Listserv, and a discussion forum that gives educators an opportunity to learn from one another. E-mail accounts are available, free of charge, to interested educators so that teachers can connect to other computers and see the kinds of information sources they have available.

Mitral Valve Repair
“It’s the perfect operation to be done through a small incision,” says James S. Gammie, M.D., a cardiac surgeon at the University of Maryland Medical Center and assistant professor of surgery at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, who will perform the surgery during the Webcast. “This procedure reduces the amount of blood loss, eliminates the need for a breastbone incision, minimizes the chance of infection and allows patients to resume normal activities sooner." Mitral Valve Repair
Surgeons at the University of Maryland Medical Center performed the first videoscopic mitral valve repair in the Mid-Atlantic region in May 2003. The center is a leader in the surgical and medical treatment of mitral valve disease.
Mitral valve surgery was first performed in 1960, when surgeons replaced the diseased, native valve with an artificial valve. For the next 20 years, valve replacement was the gold standard, using either a metal, mechanical valve or a valve made from cow tissue.

Hyattsville, MD
Highlights
  • KnowledgeBox digital learning system helps improve student performance at Hyattsville Elementary by reinforcing skills taught in the classroom. KnowledgeBox engages students by using familiar characters such as the PBS (Public Broadcasting System) cartoon characters. It also provides an up-to-date information source for students to do their own research.
Profile The school program consists of an ESOL component that services 130 students, mostly of Hispanic origin. Hyattsville is a Beaumont Foundation Grant Winner and was selected by the Governor to be a demonstration site for the State of Maryland in conjunction with the Maryland State Department of Education, known as "The Hyattsville Wireless Community." There are 23 classroom-based teachers and nine non-classroom teachers. Three full-time ESOL teachers and one full-time parent liaison work at the school in addition to having two self-contained Special Education classes. Challenge Hyattsville Elementary has faced quite a few challenges because of low test scores. The students needed software that would model the state standards and allow the children to practice skills using the testing format.
