Health for Life M.D.: Eating Well
Readers sent us their diet and nutrition questions. We asked a Harvard doctor  for some answers.
'Fish oils are overhyped'
WEB EXCLUSIVE Newsweek Dr. Frank M. Sacks, professor of nutrition and medicine at Harvard School of Public Health and Harvard Medical School, responds to your nutrition questions: Portland, Maine
I've just turned 35 years old last month.  I smoke a pack a cigarettes a day, eat fast food two to three times per week, don't exercise and my cholesterol is 302.  I do not consider myself overweight at 5 foot 10 inches and 195 pounds, but I have increasingly been feeling that if I want to live a long and healthy life I need to make changes.  What would you suggest?
Dr. Frank Sacks:
I agree with you. Your cholesterol is much too high. You should work on your diet as much as possible (see my next reply). Be careful with fast foods, as they are often high in trans fatty acids, which are used in frying and in desserts, donuts, and other pastries. Trans fat raises blood cholesterol. Of course, smoking is very bad for your health, and stopping should be a top priority. In the end, you may need a statin drug to optimize your cholesterol levels. Jackson, Miss.

Introduction Child Care Child Nutrition Children's Health ... Vouchers INTRODUCTION CHILD CARE During the 108th Congress, Senator Sarbanes joined his colleagues in introducing legislation to substantially expand Federal funding for childcare subsidies for working families. It would encourage States to invest in quality enhancements such as improving provider-child ratios; conducting background checks on childcare providers; and improving compensation, education, and training for childcare providers. Senator Sarbanes has repeatedly called on his colleagues to increase funding for childcare as legislation to reauthorize welfare reform is drafted. Affordable and accessible childcare is crucial for those transitioning from welfare to work. He has called for increased funding for the Child Care Development Block Grant program and has cosponsored legislation to enable Federal agencies to help low-income Federal employees pay for childcare. CHILD NUTRITION He has been a strong and consistent supporter of the Special Supplemental Food Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC), which provides Federal grant funds to State health agencies for monthly food supplements and nutrition education for low-income pregnant and postpartum mothers, and infants and children who are in poor health or at health risk because of poor diets. WIC has been recognized as one of the most cost-effective preventive health programs ever established. In addition to cost savings, this early investment results in increased birth weight, improved motor and visual skills and reduced incidence of anemia in low-income children.
