GeLS is a joint venture of the College of Information Studies (CLIS) and the Department of Geography. Students earn a Master of Library Science (MLS) and a Master of Arts (MA) in Geography on completion of a minimum of 54 graduate hours. For a full time student, this course of study requires two academic years plus one summer term. The Cartographic and Architectural Branch of the National Archives, located in the new Archives II annex adjacent to the UMCP campus, contains 2.2 million maps and charts including a unique collection of historic maps dating from the late 18th century to 1920 that provide early coverage of areas which later became states of the U.S. All of these resources provide the student with unequaled resources for research in the field.
