The Geography/Library Science (GeLS) curriculum of the University of Maryland is a full offering in computer based spatial analysis and information management one of the few such programs in the United States. GeLS is a joint venture of the College of Information Studies (CLIS) and the Department of Geography. Students earn a Master of Library Science (MLS) and a Master of Arts (MA) in Geography on completion of a minimum of 54 graduate hours. For a full time student, this course of study requires two academic years plus one summer term. The Cartographic and Architectural Branch of the National Archives, located in the new Archives II annex adjacent to the UMCP campus, contains 2.2 million maps and charts including a unique collection of historic maps dating from the late 18th century to 1920 that provide early coverage of areas which later became states of the U.S. All of these resources provide the student with unequaled resources for research in the field. Program Requirements
CLIS requires the completion of a 4-course sequence early in the student's program:
    • LBSC 601 Information Use LBSC 650 Information Access LBSC 670 Information Structure LBSC 690 Information Technology
In addition, students must choose one course from a variety of courses dealing with management.

You might use maps to locate an ancestral home or to find a reference to a town that no longer exists. In "Gazetteers: Identifying Research Localities," Ancestry 12 (4) (July/August 1994), David Thackery notes the following: "Genealogy is, among other things, an exercise in geography. Successful research often hinges on identifying the locality in which one's ancestors lived. Once we know the locality, we are in a position to consult the records and histories for the area in an effort to piece together the lives of our forebears." Pinpointing modern place-names can begin with Frank R. Abate, ed., Omni Gazetteer of the United State of America , 11 vols. (Detroit: Omnigraphics, 1991). The work is subtitled "Providing Name, Location, and Identification for Nearly 1,500,000 Populated Places and Geographic Features in the Fifty States, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and U.S. Territories." Modern towns can also be sought in

    Buying Maps
When I go shopping for maps, it goes something like this. Two weeks ago, in preparation for a weekend of mucking around in swamps for a wildlife census, I went into World of Maps and bought the following:
    • Three topographic maps , for the fieldwork itself; and A MapArt Ontario Road Atlas and folding maps of Barrie/Orillia and Peterborough, for getting there and back again.
But when some other people buy maps, they lay out some serious Raremaps.com via Iconomy Island of Lost Maps , which is perhaps not the most positive introduction to collecting old maps, but an interesting (and cautionary) tale all the same. submitting links on antique maps, map dealers or map collecting. Mapping Delaware
Moving from old Maryland maps to digital maps of Delaware, here is the Delaware Data MIL . Mike Mahaffie of the Delaware Office of State Planning Coordination University of Delaware , explains it: The Data MIL GIS community and spatial data users can carry out a continual update of the basic data layers that make up a digital base-map of the state. It also gives the general public browser-based access to up-to-date on-line topographic maps of Delaware.

The Allegheny Mountains are massively long and narrow mountains that sometimes run for a hundred miles or more! It turns out this was close but one ridge away.
This map (with the outline of the extreme western Maryland) shows the pertinent ridges as they were impacted by the September 11 crash.
The map is from the official 911 Commission Report. The mass just south south west is Negro Mountain/Mount Davis. Those into prominence could debate whether it is in fact part of Mount Davis. flight93crash.com appears to have backed off the argument and instead is favoring a conventional shootdown. The intial article and government cover up held appeal because I could see in the confusion following 911 I could understand why there might be a desire to create heros. Much like the Kennedy assassination conspiracies, the alternatives to the official story are pretty fantastic and in themselves have problems (some argue all the planes were taken out to sea and passengers killed and drones went sent to New York, Washington and Pennsylvania). Below is a map of Maryland showing the complete topography.
