The heart of successful maryland School Performance Assessment Program preparation is the ongoing involvement of students in performancebased instruction
http://www.pgcps.pg.k12.md.us/~elc/portfolio.html
Portfolio Assessment What Is a Portfolio? A portfolio is a purposeful collection of student work that exhibits the student's efforts, progress, and achievements in one or more areas of the curriculum. The collection must include the following:
  • Student participation in selecting contents.
  • Criteria for selection.
  • Criteria for judging merits.
  • Evidence of a student's self-reflection.
It should represent a collection of students' best work or best efforts, student-selected samples of work experiences related to outcomes being assessed, and documents according growth and development toward mastering identified outcomes. Paulson, F.L. Paulson, P.R. and Meyer, CA. (1991, February). "What Makes a Portfolio a Portfolio?" Educational Leadership , pp. 60-63. Why Use a Portfolio? In this new era of performance assessment related to the monitoring of students' mastery of a core curriculum, portfolios can enhance the assessment process by revealing a range of skills and understandings one students' parts; support instructional goals; reflect change and growth over a period of time; encourage student, teacher, and parent reflection; and provide for continuity in education from one year to the next. Instructors can use them for a variety of specific purposes, including:
  • Encouraging self-directed learning.

About Us Teachers Students Home ... Our Special News
Assistive Technology Board Maker Files On this website you will find books that have been adapted using the Picture Communication Symbols (PCS) and the Mayer-Johnson program BoardMaker (c). The Picture Communication Symbols (PCS) are typically used by individuals who have difficulty being understood verbally or have severe difficulty with reading and writing. If you have your own copy of the book, we have files that allow you to print the symbols that we used to adapt the books. These PCS can be cut out and glued into your own book so that you can read the adapted book again and again to your child or students. All files with symbols were created using Boardmaker Version 5.0.10 and require you to have that program loaded onto your computer into order to access these files. Funding for this project was provided by a grant under IDEA Assistive Technology, Part B, Maryland State Department of Education Grant #330965.

Each Research Module culminates in an instructionally sound curriculum - based activity designed to have the students demonstate an understanding of the information through the development of a technology - based product. The units range in length from several days to several weeks. Many of the units were created by teachers in the Loyola College Graduate Program since the summer of 1998. Many units have also been created by Gifted and Talented Resource Teachers in Howard County since the fall of 1998. It is my hope to post many such units at this location as time progresses. Looking for some ideas for your school's web page, check out the web pages of other schools to get ideas. Jump to the Preschool Education Program's links to research and articles on the web. This list is small but growing because only links that are immediately useful for preschool teachers are included. The "back" button at the bottom of the page will take you to the PEP home page. If you are viewing in frames mode, you can still use the navigation bar on the left to navigate around the Preschool Zone. This section contains dowloadable files for use with Boardmaker, Intellitools programs and overlays ready made for the Voice in the Box. You will also find links to the manufacturers of the equipment needed to use these files. They are all ready to use activities for a regular or special preschool classroom. Many of these files were created by teachers in the Preschool Education Program (see below). More are coming rapidly! Click here for the home page of the Preschool Education Program . PEP serves preschoolers with mild to severe disabilities in Montgomery County, Maryland. Our web page offers a description of the program as well as technology resources for preschool teachers who have access to adapted computer devices and augmentative communication devices.
