Workshop: Remote Sensing Analysis of Tropical Deforestation and Baselines for Carbon Crediting and Biodiversity
Governments, policy makers and researchers are engaging the issue of tropical deforestation in the context of international negotiations for post-2012 Greenhouse Gas emissions reductions regulations. Several tropical forest nations have expressed interest in incorporating tropical deforestation into the post-2012 climate negotiations, and policy discussions increasingly address mechanisms to credit reduced deforestation for carbon trading. But dialogue between policy makers and remote sensing scientists has, with few exceptions, been infrequent. As the prospect of creating incentives to reduce deforestation through the Kyoto system becomes more likely, the issue of how deforestation baselines are to be set – and how deforestation is to be measured in order to set them – becomes more urgent. The Workshop will bring together international remote sensing scientists to address the questions of what methodologies and standards for the measurement of tropical deforestation are currently feasible, and what methodologies and standards would be adequate to designing historical deforestation baselines for carbon crediting. Issues to be considered include: how can consistent deforestation baselines be set given differing drivers and dynamics of deforestation in different regions?

Houston, before the big blow
Here's a God's-eye view of the Houston/Galveston area on the day before Hurricane Rita moves in. Click on the images enlarge them. Here's the weather forecast for Port Arthur, Tex. Be thankful it's not yours. Posted by froylance at 06:00 PM Comments (0) TrackBack (0)
Rita slows, but not enough
Hurricane Rita has continued to slow today, spinning down to 150 mph, according to the 2 p.m. EDT advisory. That's down from 175 last night. But it remains an extremely dangerous strong Category 4 storm that seems certain to do severe damage to life and property along the Texas coastline. The impact on the economy from a direct strike on the oil, gas and refining industry in that part of the Gulf can only be imagined. Hurricane warnings are now flying from Port O'Connor northeast of Corpus Christi to Morgan City, La., due south of Baton Rouge. That puts the bullseye a bit east of Galveston and Houston, and the worst onshore winds and storm surge from there eastward through the heart of the petroleum industry's Gulf infrastructure. The hurricane-force winds extend 85 miles from the center, spanning a front 170 miles wide. Tropical storm winds reach out 100 miles farther. The stormwill arrive with a 15 to 20-foot surge, and 8 to 12 inches of rain. The region battered by Katrina could see 3 to 5 inches of rain - enough to outpace the pumps and reflood parts of New Orleans. The good news, if there is any, may be that the farther the track moves east of Houston, the more likely it is the city will avoid the worst onshore wind and storm surge. The bad news is, a track farther east puts Louisiana, its fragile bayou country and New Orleans in deeper danger of a repeat disaster. We will all be reading and hearing about this storm for a long, long time.

The MOS Sanctuary Program
The Maryland Ornitholgical Society manages a number of sanctuaries throughout Maryland. MOS sanctuaries encompass areas of unique ecological significance, as well as typical Maryland habitats from the mountains to the coastal plains. MOS members have the proud distinction of being part owner of this system. The sanctuary system is designed to preserve unique or vanishing ecological areas, to provide wildlife refuges for educational and recreational opportunities, and to maintain suitable wildlife areas for scientific studies. The MOS Sanctuary Committee and local chapters oversee the maintenance and use of these protected areas.
Protection, education, and research are the primary goals of the MOS sanctuary program, but the more than 1,500 acres of land available also provide unique birding opportunities. The opportunities are as varied as Maryland's geography. If you like mountains and northern birds, you can go to Carey Run in Western Maryland. Irish Grove, located on Pocomoke Sound, provides the other extreme. Our other sanctuaries cover physiographic areas in between.
Toward these ends, MOS currently owns and operates nine sanctuaries located in various biotic regions of the state:

PROJECT LEADERS
Director of UMIACS, Professor of Electrical Engineering Affiliate Professor with Computer Science, University of Maryland
John Townshend, Professor, Department of Geography, University of Maryland atellites with cameras trained on the Earth's surface capture a continuous stream of data for Earth systems scientists. The process of collecting data by satellites, called remote sensing, generates data that researchers can use to monitor changes in the Earth's vegetation, such as loss of tropical rain forests or the spread of deserts. However, current computing technology cannot easily handle all the data that has been archived since the early 1980s. NPACI scientists are taking the first steps to piece together the tools for storing, managing, and analyzing repositories of remote-sensing data to paint a complete picture of the changing planet. Geographers and computer scientists at the University of Maryland are leading a project to build just such a remote-sensing data toolfor the Web. Behind the Web page interface, the prototype tool, called KRONOS, will access satellite-collected data sets and analyze land cover information from the images on high-performance computers before presenting them to the Web browser.

From Genes to Geography: The Cutting Edge of Alcohol Research
The development of alcohol use problems, including alcoholism, is influenced by multiple genes (i.e., what we inherit), the environment (i.e., where and how we live), and interactions between the two. Defining precisely which genes and environmental factors are involved and how they interact in the development of alcohol use problems are complex tasks. Fortunately, a number of major technological advances are helping investigators make significant progress toward this goal. The alcoholism-related interactions explored in this issue of Alcohol Alert occur within settings ranging from brain cells to city streets.

Since 1989, the MGA, with funding from the state of Maryland and the National Geographic Society, has conducted inservices, workshops, summer institutes, and mini-courses and produced materials to assist educators in geographic instruction
Another goal of the MGA is the development of classroom materials. Some recent publications include:
  • Geography in the Middle School: A Compendium of Lesson Plans for Social Studies and Other Subject Areas. Learning About Drugs and Society: A Geographical Approach 32 Economics and Geography Lessons for Children's Literature (for Grades 2-5) (Published with the Council of Economic Education in Maryland) Teaching Economics and Geography in Maryland History: A Compendium of Lesson Plans for Grades 4 and 5 (published with the Council of Economic Education in Maryland)
The Maryland Geographic Alliance collaborates with a number of other state social studies education programs. It publishes a joint newsletter with the Council of Economic Education in Maryland. It is a co-sponsor of the Fall Conference of the Maryland Council for the Social Studies. It jointly sponsors with the Maryland Historical Society the Maryland Pictorial Map contest. The mountains, valleys, waterfalls, rivers, and dunes, islands and cliffs you see are produced by erosion. Bedrock, soil and sand are sculpted by water, ice and wind over thousands or millions of years to present us with breathtaking vistas throughout the state. Mountains, cliffs and highlands are formed of hard rocks where erosion removes softer surrounding rocks and sediments. Gorges, valley and caves are the result of water grinding or dissolving away softer types of bedrock and sediments.
