    Geography of Maryland
    Brief Overview
Maryland Geography Maryland is often called "America in Miniature." Why do you think this is true? The state of Maryland is on the east coast of the United States. It's global address is: latitude 39 degrees north, longitude 77 degrees west. There are beaches, mountains, plains, rivers and the gorgeous Chesapeake Bay for Marylanders to enjoy. The mountains in the western part of the state rise to more than 3000 feet above sea level while Eastern Shore Marylanders splash in the waters of the Atlantic Ocean. Here are some facts about Maryland:
    • Maryland has 9,874 square miles of land area.
    • Maryland's Chesapeake Bay has 1,726 square miles of water.
    • There are 703 square miles of inland water in Maryland.
Maryland is bordered by four other states in the USA. Can you name them? There are only eight other states in the USA that are smaller than Maryland. Maryland has a very unusual shape. The northern boundary of Maryland was in dispute in 1763 and two astronomer- mathematicians were given the job of surveying the dividing line between Maryland, Pennsylvania and Delaware. This boundary line is straight. We call it the "Mason-Dixon Line" and a marker in Delmar is shown in the picture on the left. The other boudary line of Maryland is quite crooked and that's because it follows a river - the Potomac River. In one place the width of the state is so narrow that a person could walk across it and not need to stop and rest. The distance across the state, between West Virginia and Pennsylvania is not much more than a mile. No other state has a width that is so narrow.

For the most part, the erratic course of the Potomac River separates the main part of Maryland from Virginia (to the south) and the long, narrow western handle from West Virginia (to the south and west). The District of Columbia cuts a rectangular indentation into the state just below the falls of the Potomac. The main part of the state is divided by the fall line, which runs between the upper end of Chesapeake Bay and Washington, D.C.; to the north and west is the rolling Piedmont, rising to the Blue Ridge and to the Pennsylvania hills. The heavily indented shores of Chesapeake Bay fringe the land with bays and estuaries, which helped in the development of a farm economy relying on water transport. Flourishing in the mild winters and hot summers of the coastal plains are typically southern trees, such as the loblolly pine and the magnolia, while the cooler uplands have woods of black and white oak and beech. Maryland has nearly 3 million acres (l.2 million hectares) of forest land.

Dorchester County is located in the central part of Maryland's Eastern Shore. It lies on the west central edge of the Delmarva Peninsula, a body of land comprised of portions of Delaware, Maryland, and Virginia, bordering on the Chesapeake Bay, the Delaware Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. Water is Dorchester's most impressive physical feature and the County is virtually surrounded by the Chesapeake Bay and rivers. Dorchester is bounded on the west by Talbot County, on the east by Wicomico County, on the north by Caroline County and the State of Delaware and on the south by the Chesapeake Bay. The Chesapeake Bay is a more recent geological development formed approximately 18,000 years ago. At that time the last glaciers began to melt and Dorchester was upland area sloping into the Susquehanna River Gorge. The Choptank was a river falling rather quickly into the Susquehanna. As the glaciers retreated by melting, the sea level rose by approximately 400 feet, forming the Chesapeake Bay.
The general topography of Dorchester County is flat with a definite elevation increase from south to north. Nearly 75% of Dorchester County has an elevation of less than 20 feet above sea level, and in North Dorchester is found the County's highest elevation-57 feet above sea level-where no tidal flooding occurs. The increasing elevation found in North Dorchester produces a gently rolling terrain with nearly all of the County's hills located in this area. South Dorchester is very flat and is generally at, or slightly above, sea level and subject to considerable flooding from high tides.

The Seventh State is home to approximately 13,000 farms which occupy 36% of the states total land area. Maryland wine, made with the grapes harvested from an estimated 250 acres of vineyards, flows through the states twelve wineries. GEOGRAPHY
Maryland covers 12,303 square miles, making it the 42nd largest state. The Chesapeake Bay occupies 1,726 sq mi of this total, Chincoteague Bay covers 106 sq mi, other inland and tidal waterways comprise 597 sq mi, leaving a total land area of 9.874 sq mi. The state is divided into 23 counties, ranging in size from 219 sq mi (Calvert county) to 664 sq mi (Garrett county). CLIMATE Because of Maryland's mid-latitude location, it enjoys a rather moderate climate, with an average temperature of 56 degrees (F). The Chesapeake Bay also adds a moderating effect, keeping both summer and winter temperatures from reaching extremes, although the two westernmost counties of Garrett and Allegany are prone to quite cold winter temps. The growing season averages 195 days, more than sufficient for most varieties of grapes. Average rainfall is 42 inches which occurs mainly during the spring and late fall. Not only is this adequate for growing grapes, but the dry summer period increases sugar levels in the grape crop. Coupled with the moderate, and not excessive, summer temperatures, this region's climate is well suited for the production of high-quality grapes.
