Wyoming Lesson Plans Please note that with regard to lesson plans dealing with anthropology, archaeology, indigenous people, ancient civilizations, history, etc, there may be some cross-over and blurring of lines between the topics. For example, a lesson plan dealing with archaeology is automatically dealing with an anthropological subject. A lesson plan dealing with indigenous people is also automatically dealing with anthropology and any of them may, or may not, be dealing with history or ancient civilizations. While every attempt will be made to keep the topic lines as 'clean' as possible, be aware this may not always be possible. Appropriate grade or age levels are included with the lesson plans. The number of lesson plans available online for this topic is enormous. This site can not and does not index all lesson resources. That would be impossible, as sites appear and disappear with astonishing rapidity. The following provides some idea of what is available and will hopefully be a good starting point. Abbreviation:
MD It's believed that Lord Baltimore, who received a charter for the land in 1632, named the state after Queen Henrietta Maria, wife of King Charles I. One of the original 13 states to join the Union (in 1788), Maryland is in the middle of the Eastern Seaboard. The Mason and Dixon line - marking the boundary between Pennsylvania and Maryland - was drawn in the 1760s to settle a dispute between the Penn and Calvert families. In addition it is the traditional boundary between the North and the South. Chesapeake Bay, which cuts deep into Maryland, provides the state with several excellent harbors including Baltimore and Annapolis, the home of the United States Naval Academy. The long Chesapeake Bay shoreline offers opportunities for boating, fishing and swimming. Old mansions and historic sites throughout the state appeal to visitors. One of Maryland's most famous annual events is the Preakness Stakes, a horse race run each May at the Pimlico race track in Baltimore.

Houston, before the big blow
Here's a God's-eye view of the Houston/Galveston area on the day before Hurricane Rita moves in. Click on the images enlarge them. Here's the weather forecast for Port Arthur, Tex. Be thankful it's not yours. Posted by froylance at 06:00 PM Comments (0) TrackBack (0)
Rita slows, but not enough
Hurricane Rita has continued to slow today, spinning down to 150 mph, according to the 2 p.m. EDT advisory. That's down from 175 last night. But it remains an extremely dangerous strong Category 4 storm that seems certain to do severe damage to life and property along the Texas coastline. The impact on the economy from a direct strike on the oil, gas and refining industry in that part of the Gulf can only be imagined. Hurricane warnings are now flying from Port O'Connor northeast of Corpus Christi to Morgan City, La., due south of Baton Rouge. That puts the bullseye a bit east of Galveston and Houston, and the worst onshore winds and storm surge from there eastward through the heart of the petroleum industry's Gulf infrastructure. The hurricane-force winds extend 85 miles from the center, spanning a front 170 miles wide. Tropical storm winds reach out 100 miles farther. The stormwill arrive with a 15 to 20-foot surge, and 8 to 12 inches of rain. The region battered by Katrina could see 3 to 5 inches of rain - enough to outpace the pumps and reflood parts of New Orleans. The good news, if there is any, may be that the farther the track moves east of Houston, the more likely it is the city will avoid the worst onshore wind and storm surge. The bad news is, a track farther east puts Louisiana, its fragile bayou country and New Orleans in deeper danger of a repeat disaster. We will all be reading and hearing about this storm for a long, long time.

The Cities Group (CG) is one of the largest research groupings of urban researchers in the United Kingdom with 11 academic staff members and 25 PhD students and research associates. The international profile of the CG is evident with staff members of the Group having held research and teaching positions in universities located in Europe, North America, East Asia, Africa, and Australia. This profile is enhanced by a number of PhD projects that include single-city studies in Berlin, Hong Kong, London, Shanghai, and Taipei, as well as multi-centred investigations in Belgium, Canada, USA, Greece, Portugal, Spain, Taiwan, and China. A particular feature is the Group's MA programme in 'Cities, Culture and Society' that is well established and attracts large numbers of both domestic and overseas students.
Research Profile
The scope of the research leads to a diversity of epistemological and methodological approaches being adopted by members of the CG, with current projects using archival and social survey analysis, ethnography, large-scale statistical data sets, and interpretative studies of film, landscape and written material. The work of the Group is not constrained by a single theoretical perspective on cities, but is characterised by a commitment to the pursuit of high standards of intellectual enquiry into, and multi-disciplinary understanding of, urban processes and change. In particular, the Group's research is united in its affirmation of space and geography as an integral component in contemporary urban change, while seeking to develop insights that have relevance for an understanding of urban public policy and the politics of sustainable cities.
