James G. Jones, MD Student Scholarship Program The AAFP Foundation administers the James G. Jones, MD Student
Scholarship Program. This program was created as a way for Dr. Jones to demonstrate his continuing commitment to the education of medical students. His yearly donation to the AAFP Foundation supports attendance by one medical student to the annual Political Leadership Institute (PLI) of the American Medical Student Association held in Washington, D.C. The PLI focuses on teaching political and activist techniques within the context of public health and health policy issues. Participants are assigned a public health topic on the first day of the workshop and work as a team to produce sound bites, policy briefing papers, a speech, and a legislative strategy for that issue. Professionals from Washington, D.C. then critique each portion of the brief and provide suggestions for improvement during small-group workshops. The Foundation mails out a solicitation to chapters and chapter foundations mid-summer requesting the nomination of a medical student who actively participates in chapter activities and who demonstrates an interest in health policy. A selection committee identifies one student to attend the PLI, which is usually held in January or early February each year.
