DEV W. LeRoy
HEINRICHS Q: Your work with "tactile" learning programs sounds intriguing. Can you describe some of these? DEV: Ted [Edward D.] Harris [a rheumatologist, former medical staff president and former medicine chair] is interested in developing a tactile program that would allow physicians or students to "feel" various stages of damage and pathologies. The stiffness on a hand-held mouse device would change depending on the extent of the arthritis programmed into the system. This would be a wonderful tool to help practicing physicians understand the arthritic process. Ted Harris can feel a wrist and know exactly what is going on. A less-experienced physician could benefit from learning what Dr. Harris feels. HEINRICHS: Q: What else?

This workshop for planetarium educators explored the places in the Solar System other than Earth where evidence for life might exist (e.g., Mars, Europa, and Titan). It also provided an update on research to identify the signatures of life on extrasolar planets through remote observation. The workshop included an opportunity for participants to interact closely with SETI senior astronomer Seth Shostak and to experience relevant inquiry-based activities.
