Parents as Advocates
Why Become an Advocate for your Child? What Happens First? What Do I Do? How Do I Learn What to Do? ... Other Pointers for the Parent Advocate
Why Become an Advocate for your Child?
As a parent, you are your child's most dedicated advocate. Because you are your child's first teacher, because you understand the history and nature of your child's disability, and because only you will be with your child throughout his or her entire educational journey, you bring invaluable knowledge to any IEP meeting. Expect to be involved in planning and monitoring your child's educational program.
What Happens First?
According to the Maryland State Department of Education's 1996 Procedural Safeguards, Parental Rights, you must receive notification of any Individual Education Program (IEP) meeting ten (10) days in advance unless you agree in writing to a shorter time. This gives you time to prepare for the meeting. Notice must include:
  • Notification of your procedural safeguards and rights in your native language or via your mode of communication, if possible A description of what the system is proposing or refusing to do and why A description of options considered An explanation concerning why options were rejected A description of each evaluation procedure, test, record, or report the school system used as a basis for its action (you may request copies)
