Maryland General Hospital
Caring for patients in the Baltimore area is nothing new. Maryland General Hospital opened its doors in 1881. Since then, it has grown steadily through its expansion of services and outreach. Only a couple of decades after its inception, Maryland General began its tradition of training medical professionals. In 1911, it joined forces with the University of Maryland School of Medicine. To this day, doctors throughout the state have Maryland General to thank for their education. In 1965, the hospital merged with the Baltimore Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat Hospital. This move attracted students from all over the country, who were eager to learn about those specialties. For a current list of job openings at Maryland General Hospital click here Today, Maryland General is a 228-bed community teaching institution that offers a full spectrum of care in more than 20 specialty areas. The hospital has experienced significant growth since 1999, when it became affiliated with the University of Maryland Medical System. Today, over 11,000 patients a year visit Maryland General. A great place to forge a career.

http://gms.im.wustl.edu/education/education.html
Education Fellowship Plan Goals The Division of General Medical Sciences of the Department of Medicine offers advanced fellowship training to general internists or specialists who seek to prepare themselves for a career in academic medicine. The training program is focused primarily on the development of clinical and health services research skills. Successful graduates of the program will be attractive candidates for appointment as junior faculty (assistant professor or the equivalent) at major academic centers. Prerequisites Most fellows hold a Doctor of Medicine degree and have completed residency training in internal medicine or another clinical specialty. Resources For each fellow, the program provides salary and benefits, office space, access to library and computer services, and shared secretarial support. Each fellow has access to special funds for research, travel, and other educational activities. One faculty member, working in a field of interest to the fellow, is assigned as an advisor (mentor). Fellows have access to the full clinical resources of the Department of Medicine and may undertake collaborative efforts with other departments. Curriculum
Most fellows complete an extended course on Designing Clinical Research taught by the division faculty. Fellows may take other course work, including courses offered in the College of Arts and Sciences, the Olin School of Business, the Division of Biology and Biomedical Sciences, the Health Administration Program, the Health Care Services Program and other university programs.

The Department offers a four-year baccalaureate degree program in Electrical Engineering. We also offer 2+2 engineering program in several engineering fields such as mechanical, civil, nuclear, chemical, etc. In the 2+2 program, students receive instruction for the first two years of the program and then apply to the Clark School of Engineering, University of Maryland, College Park (UMCP), MD, for transfer to complete the later two years of study in the field of their choice. The Engineering Program is founded on the basic sciences and emphasizes the development of a high degree of technical competence. It integrates these elements: (1) basic sciences, including mathematics, physics, and chemistry; (2) engineering sciences including mechanics of solids and fluids, engineering materials, thermodynamics, electrical and electronic circuits, and transport phenomena; (3) engineering design which applies the above elements into the creation of systems, components and processes while optimizing resources; and (4) humanities and social sciences as part of the general education requirements. The program lays a broad base for continued learning after college in professional practice, in business and industry, in public service, or in graduate study and research.

Emma S. Moss, MD
"The pathologist holds life in his hands. His responsibility to humanity is infinite. He might be called the master detective in modern medicine." Emma S. Moss, MD
Dr. Moss' chief legacy was education, both in medical schools and in the continuing education programs of the Louisiana Pathology Society and the ASCP. She originally intended to become an elementary school teacher - "one of the few careers open to a young Southern gentlewoman." But she opted for medical technology since, "I was not gentle enough to devote myself to teaching school." For many years she taught in LSU's Department of Pathology and Bacteriology and in the Charity Hospital's School of Nursing. In 1940, she became Director of Charity's Department of Pathology, dealing with the administrations, clinical faculties, and pathology departments of two medical schools. She established the first medical technology training program to require a baccalaureate degree in 1941, eventually training over 500 technologists and about 150 residents in pathology. Dr. Moss held offices in the Louisiana Pathology Society and was the force behind establishment of its continuing education workshops in the early 1950s. These were popular since many pathologists did not have the basic knowledge needed to maintain the individual clinical laboratory, particularly repairing equipment. These programs became a prototype for ASCP workshops produced by the CCE. Shortly after she became President, Dr. Moss gathered ASCP leaders in St. Louis to develop plans for an organized and coordinated program of ASCP sponsored continuing education. John Sheehan, MD; John Andujar, MD; John Goforth, MD; and Clyde Culbertson, MD , were among the attendees and the Committee on Continuing Education was born and funded for $5,000. Dr. Moss decreed that each specialty in pathology would have a council of experts, based on the Council on Clinical Chemistry which William Sunderman, MD, had established years before.
