Mentoring Across Maryland: A Report to the Community By Jacqueline Rhoden-Trader, Ph.D. (Excerpt) From the viewpoint of many of our nation's most valuable resource, its children, the world is against them. For many children, the only "friend" they have and trust is the fictitious playmate they created who catered to their every need. Recent studies, however, have confirmed that mentoring, a new aspect of youth development, is a powerful prevention strategy that provides adult contacts for youth who are isolated from adults in their schools, homes, communities and workplaces. Mentoring is not a new phenomenon, but simply an old idea that works. It is a natural part of living that has occurred since the beginning of human experience. The word "mentor" is derived from the Greek language with roots in the terms "steadfast" and "enduring." In the story, The Odyssey, by Homer, Mentor is the name of Odysseus' friend whom he entrusts the guidance and education of his son during his absence. In retelling the story of the son, the seventeenth century writer, Fenelon, makes Mentor the main character. Since then, the term "mentor" has been synonymous in Western thought with one who is a wise teacher, guide, or friend.

US State Government Aid The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is used to apply for most state loan, grant and scholarship programs, in addition to the federal loans and grants. When you submit the FAFSA to the US Department of Education, they forward the information on the form to the state student assistance agency. Each state has a different FAFSA submission deadline. If you submit your FAFSA by March 1, you will be in time for all state deadlines, other than Michigan. If you miss the deadline, you will be ineligible to receive state aid for the entire academic year. Procedures for applying for state prepaid tuition programs and the national guard differ from state to state. The amount of information provided on the state web sites varies from state to states.
