Maryland Updated on November 23, 1998 Maryland The only mentoring and new teacher support in Maryland during most of the 1980's was a series of individual program efforts carried out on a voluntary basis by local school districts. In the Maryland State Dept. of Education and the area's regional lab (Research for Better Schools) conducted a research study on existing approaches to support of new teachers being used in the state. See Meister, G. (1987). "Current Practices in New Teacher Development in Maryland". MSDE and Research for Better Schools. During that same year, in an effort to inform the practices of existing programs and to support development of new programs, the same partnership also conducted and published a review of the mentoring literature and existing program models. See Newcombe, E. (1987). "Perspectives on Teacher Induction: A Review of the Literature and Promising Program Models". Baltimore, MD. MSDE and Research for Better Schools. Also in the state funded a pilot induction program in 5 school districts called the "Exemplary Programs Project". This pilot used the state's "Maryland Teacher Competencies" and the "Maryland Competency Observation Instrument. See Maryland State Dept. of Education. 1087). "A Manual for Classroom Observers: Maryland Teaching". Baltimore, MD: Maryland State Dept. of Education, for details about the state's competencies and instrument. Our list of "Most Liberal Places in America" is based not on opinion polls, which have come under fire in recent elections, but on votes, political contributions and demographics. The rankings, at right, show nationwide picks by the size of the community and statewide rankings for 29 states.
We considered the following data in making our selections:
  • Individual contributions to PACs
We analyzed 1.8 million contributions to 2,300 political action committees that could be identified as Democratic/Liberal or Republican/Conservative. This data, for the 2003-2004 election cycle, was downloaded from the Federal Election Commission on Nov. 9.

Grass Valley City Council Accepts Business Viability Study for Idaho Maryland Mine
Author: YubaNet
Published on July 28, 2005, 17:48
Emgold Mining Corp. employees as well as members of the community who hope to see a return to the glory days of mining in Grass Valley, turned out in force on Tuesday evening to demonstrate their support for the proposed reopening of the Idaho-Maryland Mine. On the agenda were four mine-related items: Approval of the Economic Viability Study, Application Review Procedures, Request for Proposals for the Master Environmental Assessment and Environmental Impact Report (MEA/EIR), and agreements with consultants to provide staff assistance and consulting services to the city.
Given the size and unusual nature of the proposed development, city council members had decided last March to hire an independent specialist to study the economic viability of the project before proceeding with the application process. Should mining occur at the site, it would be the only medium to large-scale mining project in the State of California and the only one of any size to operate within the boundaries of an incorporated city. Throughout the state there are currently only a handful of small mines in operation. Also, the Idaho-Maryland project, if approved, would be the first mine operated by Emgold.
Almost without exception, junior mining companies like Emgold confine their activities to exploration (finding reserves) and, if they find reserves worth pursuing, they seek the financial backing of a senior mining partner to provide the capital for development, extraction, processing, and reclamation. Senior mining firms have access to more affluent, stable stock exchanges as well as predictable cash flow from the sale of minerals. Emgold, headquartered in Vancouver, has been trading on the TSX Venture Exchange since 1989. It plans to go it alone through the sale of equity securities.
