Bachelor of Science in Architecture and Environmental Design (BSAED) Dr. Richard Lloyd, Associate Professor and Director The mission of the Institute is to address the social, environmental, physical, economic and political issues that shape urban communities and urban form from an interdisciplinary perspective. The students' explorations bring them into contact with the diversity of people who live or work in urban areas. In-class and field studies are framed by such considerations as urban design, city and regional planning, landscape design, ecology, environmental justice, historic preservation, information and construction technologies as well as the behavioral sciences. The Institute's graduate and undergraduate degree programs introduce and promote the sense of interconnectedness between the built form and human behavior, to the forces of nature, and to the political and economic dynamics in an urban context.

While the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1995 (COBRA) requires most employers to offer employees the opportunity to pay for continued health coverage on their own in the event that their coverage ends due to divorce or job termination, COBRA does not require an employer to extend those rights to domestic partners. Many individuals cannot obtain health insurance for their partner through their employer, even though health insurance is in many cases offered to the spouses of employees. Even when health insurance benefits are offered to domestic partners, the employee taking advantage of these benefits is

28. Maryland Citizens For The Arts
We must ensure that every child in the state studies the arts in a meaningful way . The state of maryland has been a strong partner in helping our arts
http://www.mdarts.org/content/Artspeak/Couper.htm
Address given by William Couper, Maryland Arts Day 1999 Some of you are probably wondering why a businessperson would speak to an art crowd. It's a fair question. The answer is two-fold. I am personally interested in the arts; but more than that, I am interested in the future well-being of this state. I believe that if Maryland is to reach its potential in the larger national and world arenas, we must have a strong cultural and arts community. The world we live in is increasingly complicated; and Americans are an increasingly diverse people. As a nation, we must learn to respect our differences while growing together as a people. In the wider view, our future prosperity and security as a country are intertwined with the rest of the world. If America is to continue to prosper, we must develop international opportunities and relationships. We must understand the language and culture of those partners. The problem is fairly easy to describe; but it is difficult to solve. The arts can help us with the solution. The arts offer insight into the emotional and spiritual culture of people. While preserving unique traditions and evolving into new ones, they also show the commonality among us. They draw similarities where there seem to be none. The arts can help people understand and accept-and even value-each other's differences. Our artists and their work have been some of our most important ambassadors for American culture. We must see our artists and arts organizations as the valuable resource that they are; and support them so that they can continue to grow.

Recreation and Places of Interest
Print Preview of Section Maryland offers both residents and visitors a wide variety of recreational facilities, places to visit, and magnificent scenery. Maryland has a diversity of landscape that is no less than that of larger states, ranging from mountains and lakes in the west to ocean beaches in the east. For centuries Marylanders have engaged in a broad range of outdoor activities, which today include fishing, sailing, swimming, hunting, and hiking. Maryland also is noted for the high quality of its lacrosse teams, and a modern form of jousting has been designated as the state sport. Maryland has several well-known Thoroughbred racetracks, including Pimlico, in Baltimore, site of the annual Preakness Stakes; Bowie Race Course, in Bowie; and Laurel Race Course, in Laurel. The Capital Centre, in Landover, is a large indoor sports and entertainment arena. Ocean City, on the Atlantic Ocean, is a popular seaside resort and a noted center for deep-water sport fishing.

Maryland has over 40 miles of shoreline from its border with Virginia near the southern end of Assateague Island to the Delaware border. Building density along the shoreline ranges from the heavy development of Ocean City to the undeveloped beaches on Assateague Island. Although Ocean City is by far the largest tourist attraction on the Maryland shore, Assateague Island State and Federal Parks also bring large numbers of visitors. Maintenance of beaches is a high priority with Maryland. Since 1988, over ten million cubic yards of sand has been placed on the beaches from Ocean City northward to the Delaware line. In addition, the U.S. Army Corps Engineers (USACE) and the National Park Service recently completed restoration work on Assateague Island beaches. The State estimates that there will not be enough sand inside the three-mile limit to supply future beach restoration projects.

SUN STAFF
ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED JUNE 25, 2004 The newly elected mayor of Paide, Estonia, Westminster's sister-city, arrived in Carroll County last night for a week of diplomatic visits. Mayor Indrek Kivimae will tour Westminster recreational facilities and participate in Fourth of July events, but he is here primarily to attend a Maryland Municipal League workshop focusing on the success of the city-to-city partnership. Kivimae will join Thomas B. Beyard, Westminster's planning and public works director, on a panel discussing the value of sister cities. The workshop, to be held in Ocean City on Wednesday, will use the Westminster-Paide relationship as a case study of an ongoing partner-city program. Westminster Mayor Kevin Dayhoff will greet Kivimae at City Hall at 10 a.m. today. The Maryland National Guard is sponsoring Kivimae's trip through the Minuteman Fellow Program, which funds events to strengthen relations between the U.S. and other countries. Paide was picked as Westminster's sister city in 2002 because of the similarities between them, Beyard said. Both cities are located near a major seaport, are committed to developing recreation and youth programs, have similar business interests and are relatively close in size.
