Richardson-President Earl Stanford Richardson is the 11th President of Morgan State University in Baltimore, Maryland. A native of Maryland, Dr. Richardson earned the Bachelor of Arts degree in social science from the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (formerly Maryland State College), the Masters of Science and the Doctor of Education degrees from the University of Pennsylvania. He has been a Fellow of the Ford Foundation and the Kellogg Foundation and has conducted extensive research on critical problems in higher education relevant to racial autonomy, desegregation and integration. He has written several articles on the implications of proposals to merge historically Black institutions with white institutions and on inter-institutional cooperation in higher education. Before becoming President of Morgan State University on November 1, 1984, Dr. Richardson served in a number of Administrative positions: Assistant to the President of the University of Maryland System; and Executive Assistant to the Chancellor, Director of Career Planning; and Placement and Acting Director of Admissions and Registration at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. He has also taught at the undergraduate level.

The Medical Advisory Board of the Eye Surgery Education Council (ESEC) is comprises leading ophthalmologists who review all ESEC activity, provide medical expertise, and ensure the scientific accuracy of ESEC materials. The members of the board also serve as the chairs of the clinical committees of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS). The committees are responsible for developing ASCRS policy on a variety of clinical and research issues. Members of the news media should direct questions to these individuals through John Ciccone at the ASCRS Communications Department, (703) 788-5761. Questions from individuals about their personal eyecare problems cannot be accommodated through this venue. Position Statement on Inclusive Programs for Students With Disabilities
The 1997 Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA 97) created significant educational opportunities for students with disabilities and established important safeguards that ensure the provision of a free, appropriate public education to students with special needs. NASP strongly supports the continuation and strengthening of this mandate. NASP also recognizes the need to continually evaluate the effectiveness of all aspects of our educational system and to promote reform when needed.
A Call for Inclusive Schools
Potential Benefits
Some of the benefits of inclusive programs include:
  • typical peers serving as models for students with disabilities;
    learning new academic and social skills within natural environments, facilitating generalization of skills;
    all students learning to value diversity; and
    general education classrooms that are better able to meet the needs of all students as a result of additional instructional resources, staff development for general and special educators, a more flexible curriculum, and adapted instructional delivery systems.
