Organizational Change in the Independent School: Promise or Peril
Implementing organizational changes in the independent schools poses some unique and special challenges. What is the nature of these challenges? How might leadership identify "resistances" and increase collaboration? How might leadership mobilize the entire school community to participate in organizational assessment? Specifically, how might leadership translate organizational vision into concrete, achievable goals? And, how might these goals be implemented? Each will be addressed in turn.
What is the Nature of these challenges?
  • What is the Nature of these challenges?
  • How might leadership identify "resistances" and increase collaboration?
  • How might leadership mobilize the entire school community to participate in organizational assessment?
  • Establishing links with the community
  • Seeking consultation to obtain perspective
What is the Nature of these challenges?
A requisite to understanding these organizational challenges is an appreciation as to why faculty are drawn to work in independent schools. Many factors prompt faculty to work in independent schools including smaller class size, the freedom to develop their own curriculum, more contact with, often, very able students, collegiality, a "family-like" environment, insulation from the (ostensible) perils of public schools, academic freedom, freedom from the collegiate atmosphere of "publish or perish", an ability to influence youth at a time when it will have the most developmental impact and an opportunity to be part of a caring, nurturing community. Independent schools allow for innovation and creativity. Moreover, often they are caring and nurturing communities. For this reason, faculty end up spending a lot of time at school and devoting their lives to the school community.

Boarding Schools - Military Schools Discipline
There are signs that the military ethos can accomplish things not easily achieved otherwise. Military curricula are even taking hold in some public schools. In Detroit, the Charles Rogers Academy, named for a black army general, offers much the same program as a military prep school. Students of each year have different ranks, discipline is tight, and standards are high. About half the seniors attend collegean extremely impressive rate for an inner-city school. By shifting their focus from training future soldiers to preparing civic leaders, military boarding schools have made a comeback although their ranks have thinned since WWII. Of course, military boarding schools can seem more like another planet to the average teen. At Massanutten, a military boarding school, reveille is at 6 o'clock every weekday morning. Cadets are required to attend formation 45 minutes later dressed in full uniform, complete with polished boots. There, members of Alpha Company that's all the girls are scrutinized for signs of excessive grooming. Sparkle nail polish and heavy makeup are banned. Hair must be tied neatly into military buns or cut above the collar.

The number of students of color who attend elite schools is on the rise because more schools are making diversity a priority, said Beth Johnson, director of admission and financial aid at Friends Central.
Many students said they wanted to go to day schools rather than boarding schools. But not Erica Holland, 14, who traveled to the event with a mentor from Anapolis, Md. Erica said while Anapolis Senior High offers several advanced placement courses, the rest of her world leaves much to be desired.

Krishna temples urge victims of abuse to make formal claim
Sunday, May 04, 2003 - 05:14 pm
By Larry B. Stammer, Los Angeles Times, 4/30/2003
LOS ANGELES - The six Hare Krishna temples in California, along with several other Krishna organizations here and in West Virginia, took steps yesterday to identify minors who may have been sexually abused or mistreated at boarding schools during the 1970s and '80s.
A lawsuit over the alleged abuse prompted the Krishna movement, known officially as the International Society of Krishna Consciousness, to file for bankruptcy last year to protect its assets and, the group said, to prevent closing of temples and other facilities across the United States.
As part of the bankruptcy process, the Krishna temples plan to publish legal notices today in major newspapers and magazines and on websites, urging victims to make claims if they want to be compensated under a proposed bankruptcy reorganization plan.
The move is the latest development in a three-year legal battle over the abuse allegations.
In charges that echo the sexual-abuse scandal in Roman Catholic dioceses across the United States, plaintiffs allege they were raped or otherwise physically and emotionally abused while living in Krishna boarding schools away from their parents.

Alumni in Georgia Live Lives of Meaning and Impact; Give Credit to Academy Relationships and Atmosphere
By Walter Grubb, President Fall 2001 Volume 122 No. 01 One of the pleasures of my job is being able to travel a bit and meet some truly wonderful people. There are academy alumni in almost every state of the U.S. If my schedule would permit, l could be on the road every week, visiting with people and sharing current academy news with them as they share their academy stories with me. If there are any alumni who do not have some great stories about their academy days, I haven't met them yet. Every one I have met loves the school and is grateful for the experiences the academy offered.
On a very enjoyable and memorable recent trip to the Atlanta, Georgia, area, I talked with four very different graduates. Their school days span the 1930's, 1940's and 1950's. Although their stories were different, their love for the school and the relationships they spoke of reflect a consistent theme.
These delightful people received me graciously. l enjoyed meeting them and talking about their lives, especially their academy days. I am happy to share some of their stories with you.

Measles Outbreak in a Boarding School - Pennsylvania, 2003
Measles has not been endemic in the United States since 1997, although limited outbreaks continue to be caused by imported* cases ( ). In 2003, CDC assisted in investigating the largest school outbreak of measles in the United States since 1998 ( ). The outbreak consisted of 11 laboratory-confirmed cases: nine cases in a boarding school in eastern Pennsylvania and two epidemiologically linked cases in New York City (NYC). This report summarizes the results of the outbreak investigation, which indicated that measles continues to be imported into the United States and that high coverage with 2 doses of measles-containing vaccine (MCV) among students was effective in limiting the size of the outbreak. Health-care providers should maintain a high index of suspicion for measles, especially in those who have traveled abroad recently, and recommendations for 2 doses of MCV in all school-aged children should be followed. In April 2003, the Pennsylvania Department of Health reported to CDC two cases of measles in unvaccinated twins aged 13 years in a boarding school with 663 students. Active surveillance for measles was conducted in the school, hospitals, and doctors' offices through May 2003. Patients were interviewed, acute- and convalescent-phase sera were collected for measles IgM enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay testing, and throat swabs and urine samples were collected for viral genotyping. Efforts to control the outbreak included vaccinating or excluding from campus and isolating all students and staff members with no evidence of immunity to measles
