    Why Boarding School?
    A Parent’s Perspective
by Thomas Bahler, father of Quincy
Los Angeles, California The answer to the question, “why boarding school” is, in a nutshell, “the village.” My son Quincy is one of those kids who likes to do it all. He’s a combination academic, jock, and artist with an emphasis on architecture. When you’re fourteen, having to choose doesn’t seem like much of a choice at all. One day, he got in the car, obviously frustrated, and said, “Dad, there’s got to be a school where I don’t have to choose. It’s not that strange to want to do more than one thing.” And that’s when he first suggested the idea of boarding school. Did I miss Quincy when he went off to Hotchkiss? Sure, terribly. But something interesting happened. Like most teenagers Quincy used to give me one-word answers to my questions. How’s math? Fine. How’s chemistry? Fine. At the first Hotchkiss parent meeting, a faculty member said, “You are used to your children getting A’s, but at Hotchkiss they’re not going to get A’s immediately. Don’t fix it.” I took that to heart. With me no longer saying things like, “maybe if you studied a little harder for that test,” instead of one-word answers, I got, “Dad, I wrote this paper. It was about so and so and I found out such and such.” Twenty minutes later, he’s still telling me about it. When we talk, and we do often, it’s meaningful talk. My son hasn’t “gone away;” we are closer than ever.

Creating Professional Development Programs: Enhancing Faculty Recruitment and Retention Lynn Friedman, Ph.D. (c) 2002 What are the obstacles to the design and implementation of effective professional development programs? And how can these obstacles be overcome? Why would schools devoted to creating innovative learning environments for their students fail to do the same for their faculty? This is neither a trivial nor an inconsequential question. A failure in this particular arena flies in the face of what we might predict. So why aren't these programs more prevalent? From this description professional development programs seem like a very good idea. So why do so many schools hobble along without them? We have identified the advantages of professional development programs. But, in considering the dearth of professional development programs in independent schools, we need to consider a bizarre and curious question: What is the advantage to NOT having such programs? That is, we can readily appreciate the benefits of these programs, but what are the drawbacks? I am not talking about the everyday pedestrian sorts of drawbacks that are obvious. I am not talking about the fact that they take time and cost money. We squander our time and money in all sorts of profligate ways, so why not invest in a seemingly growth-enhancing program? Nor am I talking about a dynamic inherent to all independent schools, the tendency to operate in crisis mode so that time to reflect and plan is limited. No. I am asking about the resistances to such programs. I proffer this hypothesis: effective professional development programs are avoided precisely because they are effective. That is, they are avoided because they lead to change. They disrupt the status quo. When these programs are effective, then the organization and the individual change. Therefore, we must ask: What are the organizational and individual resistances to change?

The following bibliography lists reference material dealing with Indian boarding schools during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. These resources include material found in the Labriola National American Indian Data Center in the University Libraries at Arizona State University, websites, and other research facilities. This subject guide is also located on the Labriola Center website at www.asu.edu/lib/archives/labriola.htm
GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT BOARDING SCHOOLS The most famous boarding school for Indian children was the Carlisle Indian Industrial School in Pennsylvania, founded by Richard Pratt in 1879. The philosophy and intent of this and most subsequent schools was to assimilate Indian children by removing them from their native cultures, and teaching them the manners, dress, and job skills that were deemed important by the school founders and administrators. While boarding schools still exist, most had changed their practices of forced assimilation by the 1930s. This bibliography only covers the schools from 1879 to 1940. It does not contain any novels. It is not a complete list.

August 25, 2000
I hope our first Neighborhood News Flash was helpful - maybe leading one additional neighborhood to compete for a slot in the Healthy Neighborhoods Initiative, or prompting one neighborhood leader to pick up the phone to help out with Kidz Nite Inn, to give our young people a positive alternative to hanging out on the corner on Friday nights. I appreciate all the feedback we've received - both notes of encouragement and advice, and new e-mail addresses to add to our list. Keep it up. You can also phone our neighborhood liaison, Richard Burton, at (410) 396-1809 with any concerns. As I wrote last week, the News Flash will constantly evolve based on your input. This week, I had the opportunity to say a few words to more than 600 new Baltimore City schoolteachers. As school districts across the state struggle to hire enough new teachers to staff their faculties, Baltimore City is ready to roll. We're fully staffed earlier than we've been in years. Last weekend, the Sunpapers called our city, "the brightest spot" in the state, in terms of teacher recruitment. As we gear up for a new school year, there is a new optimism in our school system. Under the leadership of our new School CEO Carmen Valera Russo, the Baltimore City Schools will build on the legacy of improvement left by Dr. Robert Booker - which includes dramatically rising test scores in our elementary schools. No job is more important than teaching our children, and Baltimore's new teachers already are working hard to ensure they're up to the task.

THE WASHINGTON TIMES
Students in Virginia, Maryland and the District have formed dozens of such school clubs in an attempt to foster tolerance.
"They are teaching acceptance and that it's OK to be a homosexual and to practice homosexual sex acts," said John Elledge chairman of the Republican Party of Harrisonburg, Va. "I'm all for just getting along, but I'm not at all for having a sexually oriented club in our high school."
Students in Prince William County's C.D. Hylton High School want to form a Gay-Straight Alliance after-school club, and have a petition on the Internet. They claim the club will be a "safe environment" in which students can talk about homosexual issues in school and that they will discuss "coming out" and bullying by other students.
Some clubs are being formed at schools that have even younger students.

A religious community devoted to education. In the United Sates they have conducted parish schools and orphanages in numerous archdioceses and dioceses; they have also operated schools and an orphanage in the Diocese of Hamilton, Canada; an Indian school at Harbor Springs, Michigan; a school for black children at Annapolis; and a deaf-mute institute in Louisiana. Their principal boarding schools are: Baltimore, Maryland; Fort Lee, New Jersey; Quincy, Illinois; Longwood, Chicago; Prairie Du Chien, Wisconsin. Of their day and high schools the most prominent are at Baltimore, Quincy, Longwood and Chatawa, Mississippi. On 15 December, 1850, the motherhouse was transferred to Milwaukee, with Mother Mary Caroline Friess as vicar-general of the sisters in America. With money donated by King Louis I of Bavaria, a house was bought; this was absorbed later by Notre Dame Convent on St. Mary's Hill. On 2 January, 1851, St. Mary's parish school was opened and St. Mary's Institute for boarding and day pupils soon afterwards. On 31 July, 1876, owing to its growth and extension, the congregation was divided into two provinces; the Western, with motherhouse at Milwaukee; and the Eastern with motherhouse at Baltimore. A second division of the Western province became necessary, and on 19 March, 1895, the Southern province was formed, with its motherhouse in St. Louis.
