When fitted properly, eye protection reduces risk of injury by 90%. Back to top.individual sports Boxing, Wrestling, Full Contact martial arts
http://www.neec.com/Comprehensive_Ophthalmology_Sports_Eye_Protection.html
American Academy of Ophthalmology Supports Mandatory Eye Protection for Young Athletes (San Francisco) - March 16, 1998: The American Academy of Ophthalmology has chosen Sports Eye Safety Month (April) to launch its campaign for mandatory eyewear for children participating in school-related or community-sponsored athletic events. The Academy recommends that young athletes wear shatterproof goggles, constructed of 3mm polycarbonate (20 times stronger than ordinary eyeglasses), that are fitted by an eye care professional. Sports-related eye injuries increased more than 100% in the last three years, moving from 41,000 to 100,000. Of those 100,000 injuries, 90% could have been prevented had the athlete been wearing protective eyewear. Eye injuries are the leading cause of blindness in children, and sports are the major cause of eye injuries in school-age children, with up to 30% of the injuries occurring to children under the age of 16. Baseball claims the largest number of eye injuries (21%) for children aged 5-14, while basketball is responsible for 32% of the eye injuries in people aged 15-24. Overall, the sports most commonly associated with eye injuries and young adults are baseball, basketball, soccer, football, and hockey.

These links are provided by the contributors. I frequently get e-mails complaining that this or that link is no longer valid. The quick answer is: I'm not surprised, but there is little I can do about it. Continuously testing the links in the FAQ, and then tracking down replacements for the "rotten" ones would be a full-time job. Contributors - please keep your links up to date by informing me of changes! A note on Chinese romanizations: there are several different ways of representing Chinese words in the english alphabet. The FAQ uses the "pinyin" romanization (except in mailing lists and web pages which were left as written by the person that submitted them). Below are listed some of the common arts in pinyin and other forms for those wanting to cross reference:

DENNIS HINES
Master Sean Marbutt was recently inducted into the United States Martial Arts Hall of Fame in Nashville, Tennessee.
In order to be inducted into the hall of fame, a martial artist has to work as an instructor for a certain number of years, demonstrate their dedication to the martial arts and promote the martial arts to their community. Marbutt is currently a sixth degree black belt in kajukenbo karate, and he teaches several kajukenbo karate courses for the Genoa Township Park District. Kajukenbo is a combination of karate, judo, jujitsu, kenpo karate and Chinese boxing. Marbutt said he would have not been inducted into the hall of fame if it was not for his students.

OODA Applied to Individual Combat or Martial Arts Training By J. Mark Hord If the observe-orient-decide-act (OODA) loop can be applied and practiced at the military unit or at the business level as it has been, then it should be scalable down to the individual combat or martial arts level as well. OODA refers to the observe-orient-decide-act loop we take for granted in a competition. OODA was first developed and formalized as a tool for understanding the decision phase by Col. John Boyd . Every participant in a competition (whether a war, business, sport, etc.) is observing the current situation, orienting themselves in the context of the current situation, using the observation and orientation to decide what needs to be done, and then acting on that decision. If an individual can reduce the time required for himself in that phase or increase the time required by his opponent to do the same, then the individual's actions will appear unpredictable and devastating to that opponent. Military exercises are a method for practicing the OODA loop by providing a realistic environment that mimics battle. Just as military exercises are useful and necessary at the unit level, they are all the more important at the individual level. A martial art training regimen that includes OODA-practicing elements can, and should, be an integral part of that individual training. Martial arts training fosters the values of a warrior who thinks and acts on mission orders rather than specific instructions of an automaton. Martial arts foster greater esprit-de-corps in the practitioners as they train together. And, of course, martial arts increase the likelihood of the warrior surviving a hand to hand confrontation.

Participation in today's Martial Arts can provide physical fitness, discipline, self defense and entertainment....but can also result accident and injury. In the past, accident and liability coverage for Martial Arts Schools or Studios was either too costly, too limited, or not available at all. Individuals were either forced to pay extremely high insurance premiums or to run programs without proper insurance protection, therefore running the risk of personal exposure to lawsuits or a participant's injury claim. However, now a comprehensive program has been developed to specifically cover the inherent risks involved in running a Martial Arts School or Studio. This Martial Arts Accident and Liability Insurance Program is designed to help eliminate the financial and emotional burden one can incur as a result of a lawsuit or participant injury claim.

AN INTRODUCTION TO CHINESE MARTIAL ARTS
By Liang Shouyu Translated by Bill Chen and Mike Sigman Please bear in mind that "Wushu" translates to "martial arts" in general in this context, and does not imply the negative connotation of empty showmanship that some "wushu" may have gained. [In this version, I have changed the Chinese romanization to consistent Pinyin style. TWC]
INTRODUCTION TO WUSHU
Martial arts or Wushu, have been created and developed for self-defense and survival throughout human history. Correct Chinese Wushu training improves physical ability, health, and willpower; it gives an individual an excellent method of exercise, a personal art form, a competitive sport, and a basis for self-defense and sparring. Total martial training includes Ti (kicking), Da (punching), Shuai (throwing), Na (controlling), Gi (hitting), Ci (thrusting), etc. Related to each style are basic forms, or sequences, which may involve defense strategies, offense, retreat, mobility and immobility, speed and slowness, hard or soft postures, emptiness and fullness, with or without weapons. Other training will include practical defense using that particular style, defense simulation such as two-man choreographed sequences for beginning contact training. There are also internal and external body training methods to strengthen the body to withstand strikes and blows. In the advanced stages of training, a student begins full-contact training by sparring with semi-control in order to add realism to the training.
