About the Chronology
The purpose of this chronology is to introduce the history and development of the world's martial arts and combative sports. Rather than a completed proprietary work, it is very much a work-in-progress and reader input is solicited. The Internet was deemed an appropriate venue for publication because the medium is easily accessed, quickly updated, and widely available. The chronological format was selected because it provided a convenient way for storing what were otherwise unrelated factoids.

Performance Enhancement in the Martial Arts: A Review

by Monica A. Frank, Ph.D.
INTRODUCTION Although sports psychology is still in its infancy, a tremendous amount of interest has been generated by the potential of psychological principles to enhance athletic performance. In particular, the dedication to empirical examination of the tenets of cognitive-behavioral theory has led to more effective clinical techniques which have been intuitively appealing to sport psychology consultants. As a result, psychological methods were implemented to enhance performance prior to solid research support.
Much of the research in this area has focused on individual sports or individual skills for team sports as that allows for better experimental designs. As the research base has grown, it has become possible to select particular sports, especially those that are individually based, and examine the literature for the factors that influence performance. A number of studies have specifically focused on enhancing performance in the martial arts as the martial arts are conducive to empirical study given their nature and the reasons that individuals participate in the martial arts. Columbus and Rice (1998) examined written descriptions of reasons individuals participate in martial arts and found four themes: 1) criminal victimization; 2) growth and discovery including challenging self mentally, physically, or spiritually, and facing fears; 3) life transition and wanting to get life in control; and 4) task performance and seeing martial arts achievement as contributing to achieving in other life situations and tasks.

NO! You're involved in the cool sport known as martial arts. The term martial arts describes a number of different sports, combat training styles, and self-defense disciplines that began in Asian countries like China, Japan and Korea. Many of these sports date back several thousand years, and most are now practiced all over the world. Individual martial arts include Karate, Tae Kwon Doe, Ju-Jitsu, Judo, and Tai Chi. Although most martial arts involve one person competing against another, most of the benefits come from training. Often, your skills are demonstrated in performances rather than matches against an opponent. So even if you're not into competing, you can still get very good and have lots of fun.

Martial arts injuries - when males and females take up martial arts, who gets hurt?
As crime rates have expanded in Great Britain and the United States, concerns about personal safety have increased, and many people have decided to learn self-defence techniques by studying the martial arts. In the United States, for example, the number of martial arts enthusiasts has climbed past 200,000 and is still rising, even though very little information has been available concerning the actual safety of the sport itself. Some critics, sceptical of the merits of martial arts training, have suggested that you're more likely to be seriously hurt during a martial arts workout than you are to be hit on the head by a mugger.
Now, new research carried out at George Washington University in the United States indicates that the injury rate associated with martial arts participation is comparable to the risk of injury in a hard-hitting sport like rugby, and higher than other popular sports such as running, squash, and tennis. In addition, females tend to have much higher injury rates than males.
In the George Washington investigation, scientists studied 144 adult male and 30 adult female martial arts participants to calculate their frequency of injuries. The athletes engaged in a total of four different styles of martial arts - Chinese, Japanese-Okinawan, Southeast Asian, and Korean. Injuries primarily consisted of bruises, strains, sprains, and lacerations.

In modern times they have come into wide use for self-protection, as competitive sports, and for exercise. Jujitsu teaches skills that enable one to overcome a bigger, stronger opponent. A popular style of jujitsu is aikido, which uses wrist, elbow, and shoulder twists and graceful falls; it is noncompetitive and incorporates various spiritual concepts. Judo , a Japanese sport created in 1882, makes use of jujitsu principles. Other popular forms of martial arts include kung fu, karate, and taekwondo, all of which emphasize blows with the feet and the side of the hand, and kendo, in which leather-covered bamboo “swords” are used. Judo and taekwondo are Olympic sports. Capoeira, a dancelike Brazilian discipline whose movements are performed to rhythmic music, is gaining in popularity. The traditional Asian martial arts emphasize allowing ki (cosmic energy; also known as chi) to flow through one's body. This belief in ki connects the martial arts with t'ai chi ch'uan, a meditationlike discipline that emphasizes slow, graceful body movements. The most popular form of individual exercise in China, t'ai chi is often performed publicly in large groups; it has been claimed to reduce stress and lower blood pressure.

Mixed martial arts
[Categories: Martial arts, Individual sports]
Mixed martial arts or MMA is a term for the combat sport in which two competitors attempt to achieve dominance over one another by utilizing three general tactics: striking, finishing holds, and control. The rules allow the combatants to use a variety of martial arts techniques, including punches, kicks, joint-locks, chokes, takedowns and throws. Victory is normally gained through knock-out, submission (one fighter concedes victory to the other by tapping the mat or his opponent with his hand), or stoppage by the referee, the fight doctor or a competitor's cornerman. MMA is also alternately called NHB (for No Holds Barred ), but this term is mostly retired. It is no longer an accurate description of the modern competitions which utilize many more rules than before. The first Ultimate Fighting Championship's only rules were against eye-gouging, fish-hooking and biting. It was not unusual to see hair-pulling, toe-stomping and people being choked with the lapels of their clothing. One infamous early match even featured one combatant repeatedly striking his opponent in the groin. Currently, all of the major promotions have a list of rules and banned techniques.
MMA is also used to describe any modern style of (Any of several Oriental arts of weaponless self-defense; usually practiced as a sport)

40. What If I Don't Like Sports?
An individual sport means a kid does the sport on his or her own. inlineskating; biking; martial arts; bowling. What s the Big Deal About sports?
http://kidshealth.org/kid/stay_healthy/fit/no_sports.html
KidsHealth Kids Staying Healthy Keeping Fit and Having Fun
Not everyone likes organized sports or team sports. If this sounds like you, don't sweat it. We're going to talk about what keeps some kids from liking sports. With a few changes, you might find out that there is a sport out there that you could like. But if not, we'll suggest other fun ways to stay active. Learning About Sports
Sometimes, kids feel that they don't like sports because they may not understand how to play them or they haven't had much practice doing them. Sports can seem complicated because of all the rules and special equipment. Even the fields and courts they are played on come in different shapes and sizes and have confusing-looking lines drawn on them. People spend many years learning about favorite sports and practicing how to do them well. So don't feel bad if you don't know the difference between a "corner kick" and a "goal kick" in soccer. If you want to learn more about a sport, you might ask your mom or dad about camps or programs that introduce kids to new sports. These may be better than just joining a team that starts playing games right away without much explaining first. Gym class and intramural programs at school also can be a way to try new sports with a mix of kids. Another way to learn about a sport is to watch instructional videos or DVDs or check out library books that explain the rules and offer suggestions for kids learning to play them.
