http://home.vicnet.net.au/~koalas/factsgeneral.html
Is the koala a bear? No. Bears are placental mammals. Koalas are marsupials, like kangaroos and wombats. Unlike placental mammals, marsupials are mammals that give birth to very underdeveloped young that then complete their development outside the mother's body - often in a pouch. How long do koalas live? Koalas live for 12 to 16 years in the wild (Phillip Island Nature Park 1998). How large are koalas? Adult koalas weigh between four and 14 kilograms depending on their sex and where they are from. Males are up to 50 per cent heavier than females. Koalas from Victoria normally weigh eight to 12 kilograms, while those from Queensland weigh between five and seven kilograms (Phillips 1990). What are the koala's natural predators? Koalas have few natural predators. In the past, the major cause of death appears to have been dingoes. Young koalas may occasionally be taken by powerful owls or wedge-tailed eagles (Phillip Island Nature Park 1998). Do koalas have territories?

The Charge Opening Statement I know the bare minimum about the Howling movies. What I do know is that the first film was a cult hit by director Joe Dante, who also helmed such classics as Gremlins and Piranha . There was a sequel, the humorously titled Howling II: Your Sister is a Werewolf , which starred Sybil Danning. If that's not entertainment, I don't know what is. In 1987, a second sequel was produced, Howling III: The Marsupials . I can't think of a less frightening subtitle to call a film than "The Marsupials." Yes, nothing says terrifying to me like the image of Australian mammals. Anyhow, the general lot of the Howling sequels have been straight-to-video fare, and with good reason (do YOU remember seeing Howling VII: New Moon Rising playing at your local multiplex?). Henry Gee A famous palaeontologist once remarked that most of the early history of mammals could be written as generations of teeth. This view, though perhaps over-stated, has some basis in fact. The enamel that clothes teeth is the hardest organic substance known, and is likely to bear the burdens of fossilization far better than mere bones. But even teeth have their limitations as bearers of information about evolutionary history. This explains the excitement in palaeontological circles about several recent and spectacular discoveries of teeth attached to whole fossil skulls and skeletons, allowing light of unprecedented sharpness to be shone into hitherto shadowy corners of mammalian evolution.
One such corner is illuminated in a report in Nature from Guillermo W. Rougier of the University of Louisville, Kentucky and colleagues. They describe two newly found specimens of a tiny mammal called Deltatheridium pretrituberculare that lived in the shadow of the dinosaurs, around 70 million years ago. Known since the early 1920s from teeth and a few fragmentary remains, the position of

From The Nation - America's Longest Running Weekly Magazine. Open the article in The Nation Digital Archive Abstract: The article focuses on the book "Evolution of Life," by Henry C. Chapman. The contents of the interesting volume of the book are so largely taken from a professor's work "Schöpfungsgeschichte" that a recognition of the fact upon the title-page would have been quite appropriate. As it is, the author would appear to have been not sufficiently careful in stating the amount and character of his obligations to the German work. There is not, indeed, any attempt in the body of the book to cover up the source from which its facts and conclusions are obtained. The oversight is doubtless unintentional, but it has an unpleasant look and would be well worth correcting if Chapman's work should pass to a second edition. BIBLIOGRAPHY OF GENERAL WORKS IN MAMMALOGY
This bibliography is designed to guide beginning students in mammalogy to literature in specific areas. The works included are primarily monographic and of wide coverage. It is also a work in progress; I add new works and update editions when any such come to my attention. Note: This list has been compiled by scouring through curatorial offices and the library in the Department of Mammalogy at the American Museum of Natural History. It has been updated by perusing the new main library books borrowed by curators. I note the Museum's call number or the Library of Congress number on the back of the title page; these are not always the same, and I prefer the Museum Library's number. Several titles are taken from publisher's fliers and Choice cards; the pagination is not always correct for books that are yet to be issued, and they usually end in suspiciously round numbers. To recommend inclusion of additional works or to correct listings, please notify John H. Wahlert

FEMALE MARSUPIAL
REPRODUCTIVE CYCLES
THE GENERAL MARSUPIAL PATTERN
A feature of the gestation period of marsupials is its short duration. The foetal marsupial may spend as little as twelve to thirteen days in the reproductive tract. Why is the gestation period so short and what happens in this time? In female bird and mammals the reproductive tract has two primary functions. The first is the reception and transport of spermatozoa to the egg so that fertilisation can occur. The second function is to provide the egg with coats and 'shells' and to provide nourishment for the developing embryo. The complex sequence of events which make this possible is called the oestrus cycle. There are two phases of the cycle: the pro-oestrus or follicular phase and the luteal or secretory phase. These names refer to stages which occur in the activity of the ovary during the cycle, but are reflected in the whole reproductive tract. The brief post-oestrus proliferative phase in the uterus is followed by a secretory or luteal phase, which is under the control of the hormone progesterone, produced by the corpus luteum. The corpus luteum is a gland that forms the wall of the ruptured ovarian follicle. During the luteal phase the uteri become highly secretory and swollen and vascular. Abundant secretory material is poured into the uterine lumen to provide nutrients for the growth of the embryo and its associated membranes. The luteal phase varies in length in different marsupials and is followed by a regressive phase during which there is a reduction in size complexity and secretory activity of the uterine glands. Anoestrus, an overall shutdown of the system, follows in those species which have only one oestrus per breeding season. However in continuos breeders or species that have more than one oestrus a regressive or post-luteal phase grades into the next pro-oestrus phase.

http://rubens.anu.edu.au/student.projects/kangaroos/f-anatomy.html
FEMALES: REPRODUCTIVE ANATOMY
Before it is possible to discuss reproduction in kangaroos it is necessary to look at some background information regarding marsupials in general. In the embryos of amniote vertebrates (reptiles, birds and mammals) there are three pairs of ducts which are concerned with excretion and reproduction. These are the Wollfian ducts, the ureters and the Mullerian ducts or oviducts ( Fig. 1 ). The Wollfian ducts are initially involved with excretion but during development they become sperm ducts or the vasa deferentia of the adult. The Mullerian ducts provide the fallopian tubes, uterus and vagina of the female tract. During the development of marsupials the ureters pass to the bladder between the Mullerian ducts, while in placental mammals the ureters enter the bladder by passing laterally to, or outside, the Mullerian ducts. The independent reorganisation of the urogenital ducts in early marsupials and placentals was most probably related to a separation of the urogenital tract and the gut and not primarily related to reproduction. This reorganisation has allowed the ureters to open directly into the bladder instead of the lower gut. If the urine is held in an impermeable bladder, as distinct from the permeable lower gut, it can be concentrated, thus enabling a considerable saving of water when excreting waste products from the kidney. Previously, it had been suggested that placentals had a selective change in embryogenesis which resulted in the alternative path for the ureters. This change, it was suggested, allowed for the fusion of the Mullerian duct derivatives to form a large uterus and vagina and thus permit the production of a lager advanced young. Such a simple explanation for the differences between the reproductive systems of placentals and marsupials is not supportable. Fusion of the Mullerian ducts is not necessary to achieve large offspring. Some placentals, even ungulates which give birth to advance young, have completely separate uterine horns and marsupials also show some fusion and development of the reproductive tract.

Forest fragmentation is a critical issue for wildlife habitat conservation. This open eucalypt forest near Mount Gambier can be thought of as a mosaic pattern of patches, corridors and networks. Landscape ecology attempts to understand ecological function through spatial analysis of such patterns. The key outcomes from landscape ecology are enhanced understanding of structure, function and change in the mosaic of ecosystems that make up landscapes. GIS provides the tools for carrying out these analyses. Below patches of native forest are set in a matrix of pasture land (white), seasonal swamps (blue) and pine plantations (purple). Red dots indicate marsupial location records in the native forests. These patches can be analysed for area, shape, and connectivity. Environmental correlations with species location data can be developed to aid management. Data courtesy of David Paull, UNSW.

This Month in the GliderVet Newsletter
Welcome Sugar Glider Mamas and Papas! Lisa here! Welcome to our July issue of the GliderVet Newsletter. I believe we have a menu of interesting articles for you this month, and remember I used the word menu! Arnold says I have to talk about him first, because he is giving up his article space this month to the FAQ (Frequently Asked Question) topic. In this month's FAQ section we will be re-visiting some issues concerning nutrition with an editorial review of the pre-packaged products that are available for sugar gliders. Arnold "supervised" the food research project, so I told him the FAQ was really all about him - that's why it was so easy to steal his space! We will also be bringing you a guest contribution this month concerning the possible effects of stress and newborn joeys. The story of Baby Roscoe is touching with a very happy ending! And of course, the newsletter would not be complete without Dr. C's contribution. This month Dr. C's feature will discuss the breeding anatomy and unique attributes of the sugar glider's reproductive system. Well, actually these are attributes that are specific to many animals in marsupial order.
