Ties between Pacific island nations and Japan are growing deeper year by year as Japan's private sector continues to invest in these countries and more development assistance is extended to them. From fiscal 1991 through fiscal 1999 the Sasakawa Pacific Island Nations Fund (SPINF) implemented the project Inviting Media Personnel from the Pacific Island Region to Japan. More than 60 media personnel from Pacific island nations visited Japan through that project, which aimed to promote understanding of Japan within the region. This year, as the second phase of its efforts, SPINF launched this new project.
In conjunction with the second Japan-South Pacific Forum Summit Meeting (PALM 2000), which was organized by the Japanese government and held on April 22, SPINF invited eight journalists from the Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, Palau, Papua New Guinea, and Tonga to Japan. These journalists later wrote feature articles that were carried in local newspapers and magazines, broadcast on radio, and posted on the Internet. SPINF also sent three newspaper and television reporters from Miyakojima and the Yaeyama Islands in Okinawa Prefecture to Palau in March 2001. These journalists interviewed the nation's new president and gathered material on a wide range of subjects, including environmental problems, the activities of Okinawans living in Palau, the island nation's traditional culture, and the current state of education. Upon returning to Japan, they produced features on Palau.

Generally, the largest concentrations of settlements on small islands occur no further than 1-2 km from the coast, and sometimes much less. In most of the eastern Caribbean states, for instance, more than 50% of the population resides within 2 km of the coast; the corresponding figure in Barbados is estimated to be in the region of 60% (Nurse, 1992). Similarly, large coastal populations are the norm in the Pacific and Indian Ocean islands-especially the atoll states, where settlement areas may even be sited on the beach itself or on the sand terrace (e.g., Tuvalu, Kiribati, Maldives). Clearly, such settlements are at risk from projected sea-level rise-which, in all likelihood, would be accompanied by inundation, increased flooding, coastal erosion, and consequently land loss. ); Majuro, Marshall Islands (2,188 persons/km

General Characteristics of the RMI The Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI) is made up of 2 nearly parallel chains of islands, the Ratak (Sunrise) group and Ralik (Sunset) group. Together, the two chains comprise 29 coral atolls, each made of many islets, and 5 islands located in the central Pacific 2,270 miles southwest of Hawaii. RMI's nearest neighbors are Kiribati to the south and the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) to the west. RMI's total land area of 70 square miles, scattered over a vast 750,000 square miles of the Pacific, makes it the smallest of the 5 American-affiliated Pacific territories in Micronesia. At the same time its estimated population of 56,000 is the third largest (following Guam and FSM), with Micronesia’s highest population density of 803 persons per square mile. Both English and Marshallese are official languages, and the traditional society of complex matrilineal clans has gradually but carefully been blended into an American-style system of democratic institutions. RMI has approximately 1,225 atolls, islands and islets, with a mean height of only 7 feet above sea level. These low elevations make the atolls vulnerable to damage from storms and high waves, but typhoons, which are often very destructive in the Western Pacific, are not common to the area. Rainfall decreases from south to north and January-March are the driest months. Seasonal variations in rainfall and temperature are very small. Because of sandy soil and high salt content, most of RMI's soils are unsuitable for most agricultural production except for a few tropical species.

The Marshall Islands: A Brief History
The Marshall Islands, the easternmost islands of Micronesia, are coral caps set on the rims of submerged volcanoes rising from the floor of the Pacific Ocean. Scattered over 750,000 square miles, they consist of two parallel chains of coral atolls: the Ratak, or sunrise, to the east and the Ralik, or sunset, to the west. The chains are 125 miles apart and extend about 800 miles northwest to southeast. In total, the Marshall Islands consists of 29 atolls each made up of many islets and five islands. In total there are approximately 1,225 islands and islets. The total land area is about 70 square miles (181 square kilometers), with the mean height of the land about seven feet (two meters) above sea level. Most of the 57.700 inhabitants live on two atolls: Majuro, the capital of the Republic; and on Ebeye in Kwajalein, the largest atoll in the world, with a land area of six square miles surrounding a 655 square-mile lagoon. While western Micronesia was probably settled by peoples from the Philippines or Indonesia about 1500 B.C., it is believed that eastern Micronesia including the Marshall Islands was settled by Melanesians at about the same time and possibly by peoples from western Micronesia at about the beginning of the Christian era. Relics found on Majuro have yielded carbon dates of 30 B.C. and A.D. 50. Early Micronesians were skilled navigators who made long canoe journeys among the atolls. The first European contact with the Marshall Islands occurred between 1529 and 1568 when seven Spanish visitors touched upon the atolls. Spanish navigator Alvaro Saavedra is generally credited with the first sighting in 1529. The last one in this period, Alvaro de Mendana, passed the Marshall Islands on a return trip to Acapulco, Mexico, then a base for commerce with the Philippines. The British captain Samuel Wallis chanced upon the Rongerik and Rongelap atolls while sailing from Tahiti to Tinian in 1778. Mapping began in 1788 under the direction of British naval captains Thomas Gilbert and John Marshall, for whom the islands are named, and was continued by Russian expeditions under Adam Johann Krusenstern in 1803 and Otto von Kotzebue in 1817 and 1823.

he FSM has a rich history dating back several thousand years. The islands were originally settled by ancient people sailing east from Asia and north from Polynesia . Later discovers and settlers included the Spanish, Germans, and Japanese and evidence of their former presence is found throughout the islands. Following the trusteeship under U.S. administration after W.W. II, the FSM is now independent and self-governing. Most linguistic and archaeological evidence indicates that the islands were first discovered and settled between two and three thousand years ago . The first settlers are often described as Austronesian speakers possessing horticultural skills and highly sophisticated maritime knowledge . These first settlers are thought to have migrated eastward from Southeast Asia to Yap. From there, some migrated south to Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, and New Caledonia, and later to Kiribati and the Marshall Islands. The oral histories of the Micronesian people indicate close affiliations and interactions in the past among the members of the island societies comprising the present-day FSM. The Lelu ruins in Kosrae (1400 AD) and the Nan Madol ruins of Pohnpei (1000 AD) are impressive reminders of the accomplishments of these early peoples.
