    History
    While settled by Micronesians in the 2nd millennium BC, little is known of the early history of the islands. Spanish explorer Alonso de Salazar was the first European to sight the Marshalls, but the islands remained virtually unvisited by Europeans for several more centuries, before being visited by English captain John Marshall in 1788; the islands owe their name to him. A German trading company settled on the islands in 1885, and they became part of the protectorate of German New Guinea some years later. Japan conquered the islands in World War I, and administered them as a League of Nations mandate.

    and Giff Johnson
    The story of how I came to be the only Bikinian woman ever to dive the ships on Bikini Atoll actually began 37 years before I was born. It was in 1946 that officials from the U.S. government flew to my homeland to ask my people if they were willing to give up their islands "for the good of mankind" so that the American military could test nuclear weapons.
    My people were moved off of Bikini and are now living on a small island in Majuro Atoll, Ejit Island (see Bikini: inside story
    When I was 14 my parents sent me away to Portland, Oregon in the United States to go to school. After four years, I returned to the Marshalls where I met my husband, Jack, an American who works for our people in our Majuro office: we were married in 1989. My education and my experience in America left me with a great desire to learn and to experience new things. In my culture, a woman has a very traditional role to fill: namely, we are expected to take care of the children, wash the clothes and cook the food. It is our duty, in our custom, to take care of the house while the men go off to work and to gather food.
    When I returned to the Marshalls I felt oppressed by these expectations. I wanted to be different, I wanted to be myself, I didn't want to be constrained

    Country Profile of the Republic of Marshall Islands
    Overview of the Republic of the Marshall Islands The Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI) is a nation of more than 50,000 living on 29 coral atolls and 5 small low-lying islands in the central Pacific, mid-way between Hawaii and Australia. The RMI adopted its constitution in 1979, and signed the Compact of Free Association with the United States in 1986. The RMI became a member of the United Nations in 1991. The natural beauty and rich culture of the Marshall Islands attracts tourists from around the world. Pristine coral reefs teeming with marine life make the Marshalls a premiere dive destination. Yet our country faces formidable challenges in the form of rapid population growth, and accelerated sea-level rise, among others.

  • Sound system of governance with political stability and commitment to our Vision 2018, and a competent and honest public service; High investment in education and research; Foster a culture of high savings, investment and productivity; Our ability to take advantage of emerging global trends; Effective and responsible economic and financial institutions; Facilitating equitable development of our Outer Islands; Strengthening the spirituality of our Marshallese people;

Pristine coral reefs teeming with marine life make the Marshalls a premiere dive destination. The Marshall islands form two vast parallel chains of atolls scattered over 750,000 square miles of the tranquil Central Pacific. The chains are called the Ratak (sunrise chain) and Ralik (sunset chain) and together, they encompass 29 atolls and 5 individual islands totaling abut 1,225 islands and 870 reef systems. Spring 2005 Illustration: An early childhood teacher strives to make all her students feel at home By Laura Linda Negri-Pool When I was a child, our home was filled with the sounds of Spanish, mariachi music, and boisterous conversations. At home, my Nana cooked enchiladas, menudo, and tamales . During family celebrations we broke , danced, and hung papel picados . I was surrounded by six siblings, multiple cousins, tios , and tias . My home was filled with light, color, art, texture, and love. My school, in contrast, was drab, white, and unappealing. I recall only one time when my Mexican-American identity was validated during elementary school. When I was in third grade, my mother organized a Cinco de Mayo event at our school. My father, siblings, and I cut out the papel picados , made the I want my students to have more than one memory like that. I've taught preschool for 27 years, and I feel passionate about embracing families from non-dominant cultures into the early childhood communities I work in. As the result of a personal process of identity and cultural reclamation, I came to understand how my personal experiences influence this passion.

It is used in such sentences as Na ij rikaki eo ami kaal, or, "I'm your new teacher." However, to many of Dartmouth's current students and recent graduates, who for the last four years have been part of Dartmouth's Marshall Islands Program , this word has been imbued with complex meaning and emotion.
