They have created this collaborative command and control system called Maestro , which does this combination of data visualization, collaboration, command and control. It lets them look at images and create 3-D reconstructions of terrain. It allows various experimenters to look at the scenes and topography, browse the image databases and take part in all the participation they need to do. And to do it in a remote, distributed and collaborative kind of way - so they could actually have scientists at institutions all over the world who are not only looking at the data, but also collaboratively deciding on the way the mission should proceed. One of the nice things that the JPL guys have done is that they've made a "cleaned up for civilians" version of this application available that's called Maestro. The image was taken on Tuesday to help calibrate Odyssey's infrared camera, called the Thermal Emission Imaging System, or THEMIS. The image indicates the nighttime temperatures on Mars and demonstrates the "night-vision" capability of the camera system to observe Mars, according to NASA. "This spectacular first image of Mars from the 2001 Mars Odyssey spacecraft is just a hint of what's to come," said NASA associate administrator Ed Weiler in a prepared statement. The $720m (£397m) Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) blasted off at 1243 BST (1143 GMT) on Friday after being delayed for two days running. A launch attempt on Thursday was scrubbed due to a sensor malfunction. MRO will arrive at Mars in March on a four-year mission; its cameras will send back the clearest images yet of the planet from space. "What a difference a day makes," said Nasa launch manager Chuck Dovale. "It couldn't have been any smoother." The spacecraft is the size of a small bus and weighs about 2,000kg; it will carry some of the most sophisticated instruments ever taken to the Red Planet. Cameras and spectrometers will enable scientists to study Mars' composition and structure and search for surface features related to water. Cesto nazivan Crvenom Planetom, Mars svoje boje moze prije zahvaliti velikim podrucjima crvenkaste oksidirane prasine, nego niskim temperaturama koje na njemu vladaju. Ima dva satelita : Fobos (Strah) i Deimos (Uzas). Dugo je vremena Mars privlacio paznju astronoma, ako nista onda zato sto se nekada smatralo da gore zive inteligentne vrste. Italijanski astronom Giovanni Schiaparelli je, usmjerivsi 1877. godine svoje teleskope ka Marsu, uocio nekoliko cudnih oznaka na njegovoj povrsini. Nazvao ih je "canali", rijecju koja u talijanskom jeziku oznacava kanale nastale prirodnim putem. Ipak, termin je pogresno preveden kao "canali" koji su sve samo ne prirodna tvorevina, pa su neki astronomi zakljucili kako je planet pokriven sistemom kanala koje su izgradili inteligentni Marsovci da bi prenosili vodu od polarnih do suhih podrucja oko ekvatora. Tako se smatralo sve dok svemirske sonde nisu posjetile Crveni Planet i na Zemlju odaslale fotografije njegove povrsine.

Mars Today Mars Today, created by Howard Houben of the Mars Global Circulation Model Group , is a poster produced daily by the Center for Mars Exploration at NASA's Ames Research Center. The updated poster depicts current conditions on Mars and its relationship to Earth in six panels. The upper left panel diagrams the current positions of Mars and Earth in their orbits around the Sun. Note that Mars has a highly elliptical orbit compared to the Earth. For much of the time, Mars is too close to the Sun (as viewed from Earth) to be observed by Earth-based telescopes. The panel also shows the interplanetary trajectory of Mars Global Surveyor. That spacecraft entered Mars orbit in 1997. Much information on the Martian surface and atmosphere is being gathered by the Global Surveyor which began the mapping phase of its mission in spring 1999. The upper middle panel shows two views of the positions of Mars and Earth from vantage points near the ecliptic (the plane of the Earth's orbit). This allows visualization of the tilts of the rotation axes of the planets that are responsible for the seasons. Two views are necessary because Mars and Earth are tilted in nearly orthogonal directions. At this time, midwinter in the Earth's northern hemisphere, the south pole is pointed towards the sun.
