With Proof of Ancient Water on Mars, Researchers Consider Life's Chances The success of NASA's Mars rover Opportunity in finding tell-tale signs of past water at its Meridiani Planum landing site has left some researchers believing the region could have once been a habitable, albeit hostile, environment. WASHINGTON A pair of NASA scientists told a group of space officials at a private meeting here Sunday that they have found strong evidence that life may exist today on Mars, hidden away in caves and sustained by pockets of water. The scientists, Carol Stoker and Larry Lemke of NASA’s Ames Research Center in Silicon Valley, told the group that they have submitted their findings to the journal Nature for publication in May, and their paper currently is being peer reviewed. What Stoker and Lemke have found, according to several attendees of the private meeting, is not direct proof of life on Mars, but methane signatures and other signs of possible biological activity remarkably similar to those recently discovered in caves here on Earth.

Besides sand avalanches, the pictures, snapped by a camera onboard a satellite orbiting Mars, depict a variety of haunting sand landscapes, from stormy scenes with dark streaks on steep dunes, to peaceful picture replete with small wind ripples on gentle slopes. Mars has been known for centuries to experience large dust storms, but it was not until the Mariner 9 mission in 1971-1972 that pictures from the planet showed sand dunes.

The Mars Global Surveyor spacecraft took off in November and reached the orbit of Mars on September 11, 1997 to begin an orbital mission that will provide detailed mapping and weather information. The Mars Pathfinder spacecraft blasted away in December and landed on the Red Planet on July 4, 1997. Life on Mars. Is that a possibility? Did it ever exist? A U.S. space probe is on its way to the red planet to try to start answering those and other questions about Mars. The Global Surveyor will map the entire Martian surface and is expected to produce a spectacular mosaic of the planet. The mission is the first step in a planned decade-long exploration of Mars, and comes four months after NASA revealed what some say is "the biggest discovery in the history of science" a Martian meteorite with supposed evidence of ancient microscopic life.

Jelly plants could grow, and glow, on Mars
Green-glowing Arabidopsis thaliana a future pioneer of Mars? By Richard Stenger CNN (CNN) An invasion of an alien species with plant and animal attributes could take place within years. But Earth would be the departure point, not the destination. Terrestrial scientists planning to sprout genetically altered weeds on Mars hope to take part in a $300 million mission to the red planet that could pave the way for human colonization. The plants, which will contain genes from jellyfish to make them glow in response to environmental stresses, could leave Earth on a spacecraft bound for Mars as early as 2007, according to NASA. MESSAGE BOARD Destination Mars "It will be a symbolic step of life from Earth, leaving Earth, and growing somewhere else," said Chris McKay, a NASA scientist involved in Mars missions. A robotic gardener will scoop up, analyze and fertilize martian soil in miniature greenhouses, which will house germinating specimens of a common mustard plant known as thale cress.

Take a flight over the surface of Mars
Artist's concept of the Mars Global Surveyor
(CNN) Ever imagined what Mars would like from an orbiting spacecraft? NASA this week released a short Y2K Mars "movie," composed of images snapped by a camera onboard the Mars Global Surveyor. The spectacular footage offers a glimpse of the red planet near the south pole as clocks on Earth struck midnight, January 1, 2000, in the time zone that includes Mexico City and Chicago. The bright white/pink surfaces in the movie are the martian south polar cap, where it was early summer as the Earth's new century arrived. The martian atmosphere is hazy and pink with particles kicked up by dust storms that occur along the margin of the retreating seasonal frost cap. VIDEO Mars Y2K QuickTime 3 MB/ 40 sec.
