Two others will roam, grind and bore. Together, they could revolutionize our knowledge of the red planet and extraterrestrial life. The robotic explorers from Europe and the United States are using entirely different approaches to the cosmic quest, which begin this month with launches that take advantage of an exceptionally close Earth-Mars alignment. The Beagle 2 lander is a shoestring biologist, built by the British at the behest of the European Space Agency for an estimated $60 million. It departed Monday from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. The dog-sized bot, only 73 pounds (33 kilograms), will look for direct evidence of existing life, whether combing the Martian atmosphere for methane, a possible biological byproduct, or checking rocks for a form of carbon favored by cells.

May 19, 2000: Here is the latest version of our "final comments" (in MS word PDF , or Postscript format). Also, here are two technical notes: one about linear analysis ( postscript pdf ) and the other about key-agility ( postscript pdf A note regarding repeated differences in the MARS s-box is available here August 11, 1999: MARS was chosen as a finalist in the AES selection process. A suggested "tweak" in the key-setup routine of MARS was accepted by NIST. A pseudocode of the new key-setup rutine is available here. Also, you can find here the new test vectors for MARS. MARS is a shared-key (symmetric) block cipher, supporting 128-bit blocks and variable key size. It is designed to take advantage of the powerful operations supported in today's computers, resulting in a much improved security/performance tradeoff over existing ciphers. As a result, MARS offers better security than triple DES while running significantly faster than single DES. The current C implementation runs at rates of about 65 Mbit/sec. on a 200 MHz Pentium-Pro, and 85 Mbit/sec. on a 200 MHz PowerPC. In hardware, MARS can achieve a 10X speedup factor. Still, both hardware and software implementations of MARS are remarkably compact, and easily fit on a smartcard and in other limited-resource environments.

Francesco Puglisi, 6 Maggio 2000: Insolito
Mission to Mars

Welcome to The Daily Martian Weather Report . The launch of the Mars Global Surveyor from the Cape Canaveral Air Station took place on November 7, 1996. After a ten-month cruise to Mars, the MGS spacecraft executed its orbit insertion maneuver on September 12, 1997. The period of the initial orbit of Mars was nearly two days. The mission plan called for a three- to four-month aerobraking sequence to modify the orbit to one suitable for mapping the red planet. The mapping phase of the mission was then scheduled to begin in the spring of 1998, and to continue for one complete martian year (687 days). Unfortunately, problems with one of the two MGS solar panels forced the aerobraking sequence to proceed more slowly than planned. MGS executed its final aerobraking pass through the upper martian atmosphere on February 4, 1999, and successfully performed its aerobraking exit maneuver later that day. MGS executed its transfer to mapping orbit on February 19, 1999, and since then has been in the desired mapping orbit with a period just under two hours and an altitude of approximately 250 miles. The primary mapping phase of the MGS mission began in March, 1999, and was completed in January, 2001 after one martian year. An extended mapping mission began on January 31, 2001 and is expected to continue into the year 2002. The extended mission will permit study of year to year changes on Mars.

Australia fossil to help in search for life on Mars
This fossil contains life forms believed to be 3.46 billion years old MESSAGE BOARD Destination Mars September 3, 1999 Web posted at: 4:18 p.m. EDT (2018 GMT) (CNN) A discovery of the fossilized remains of the Earth's oldest lifeforms will help NASA in its search for life on Mars, scientists said Thursday. The 1.25 meter, "egg carton" shaped rock, retrieved from the remote Australian outback in July, contains life forms believed to be 3.46 billion years old. "They were the earliest life forms and probably the only form of life on Earth for the best part of two billion years," said Dr. Kath Grey of Macquarie University in New South Wales, a member of the team that discovered the fossil.

Researcher: Mars rock varnish hints of life
By Richard Stenger CNN (CNN) Many Mars rocks possess a chemical quality that suggests they harbor life, which could eke out an existence in a similar manner as microbes in the harshest, driest places on Earth, according to a new report. Studying images taken by two Mars landers, a planetary researcher found striking similarities between rocks on the red planet and rocks in terrestrial deserts known to contain thin layers of primitive life. The Mars rocks, photographed by NASA's Viking and Pathfinder probes in 1976 and 1997, appear to have shiny, dark coatings, much like terrestrial rocks covered with a kind of desert varnish linked to simple bacteria and fungi. "I think if life exists on Mars today, it would be found in ... coatings like rock varnish," said report author Barry DiGregorio, who penned the 1997 book "Mars: the Living Planet." The Mars varnish resembles a manganese-rich variety produced only by terrestrial microorganisms on desert rocks, he said. The microbes remove metal particles from atmospheric dust and fog, oxidize them, and then build up layers and layers of varnish, using secretions as glue. "All the right ingredients for this kind of life are already there on Mars," said DiGregorio.
