Welcome to the Mars Prize Web Site!
The Mars Prize is an effort to close the gap between the X-Prize and the Mars Exploration Prizes of The Earth and Space Foundation . The Mars prize will start out with a goal of collecting $300,000 to be awarded to the winner. If donations and entry fees exceed that amount the prize will increase in value.
One of the main goals of Mars Prize is to spur development in space.

The god of war, and one of the most prominent and worshipped gods. In early Roman history he was a god of spring, growth in nature, and fertility, and the protector of cattle. Mars is also mentioned as a chthonic god (earth-god) and this could explain why he became a god of death and finally a god of war. He is the son of Jupiter and Juno . According to some sources, Mars is the father of Romulus and Remus by the Vestal Ilia ( Rhea Silvia ). Because he was the father of these legendary founders of Rome, and thus of the Roman people, the Romans styled themselves 'sons of Mars'. His main sanctuaries where the temple on the Capitol, which he shared with Jupiter and Quirinus, the temple of Mars Gradivus ("he who precedes the army in battle") where the Roman army gathered before they went to war, and the temple of Mars Ultor ("the avenger"), located on the Forum Augustus. The Campus Martius ("field of Mars"), situated beyond the city walls, was also dedicated to him. Here the army was drilled and athletes were trained. In the Regia on the Forum Romanum, the 'hastae Martiae' ("lances of Mars") were kept. When these lances 'moved', it was seen as a portent of war. The warlord who was to lead the army into battle had to move the lances while saying 'Mars vigila' ("Mars awaken"). As Mars Gradivus, the god preceded the army and led them to victory. He had several festivals in his honor. On March 1, the Feriae Marti was celebrated. The Armilustrium was held on October 19, and on this day the weapons of the soldiers were ritually purified and stored for winter. Every five years the Suovetaurilia was held. During these fertility and cleansing rites, a pig (

Giant flood channels uncovered on Mars
Partially buried northwestern slope valleys (NSVs) could have raged with floodwater By Richard Stenger CNN (CNN) The largest valley system in the solar system, discovered underneath layers of hardened lava, ash and dust on Mars, could have delivered enough water to fill an ocean within a matter of weeks, according to scientists. Dwarfing anything on Earth, the flood channels were spotted by a satellite in Mars orbit that can peer with a laser instrument under the planet's surface. The network of gorges, situated in the Western Hemisphere between a giant volcano and the possible remnants of an ocean, is 10 times larger than its nearest rival on the red planet, according to the researchers. Cataclysmic floods that at times unleashed 50,000 times the flow of the Amazon River most likely formed the outflow system, which boasts individual channels as wide as 125 miles (200 km), the scientists said. "After picking the complex geologic picture apart like a jigsaw puzzle, we think there must have been several episodes of (volcanic) heating creating catastrophic floods," said James Dohm of the University of Arizona in Tucson this week.

NASA probe flies out of Mars atmosphere
Artist's concept of Mars Odyssey By Richard Stenger CNN Sci-Tech (CNN) After completing complex braking maneuvers in the atmosphere of Mars, a new NASA probe has begun to raise its orbit to prepare for its scientific mission, according to NASA flight managers. The Mars Odyssey should initiate planetary studies in February, mapping surface chemicals, looking for water and analyzing radiation levels. Flight controllers for the Mars Odyssey spacecraft sent commands several days ago to raise the spacecraft up out of the atmosphere. The orbiter fired thrusters for four minutes, prompting a course change that raised its orbit 53 miles (85 kilometers), according to NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California. "Everything went as planned, and the spacecraft is in the place we expect it to be," Jet Propulsion Laboratory spokeswoman Mary Hardin said Monday.

Study: Asteroids shaped Mars canyons

Valles Marineris, called the Grand Canyon of Mars, dominates the planet's southern highlands. Story Tools
RELATED Science magazine Mars exploration (NASA) BIG DITCH Valles Marineris, dubbed the Grand Canyon of Mars, is more than four times longer and deeper than its terrestrial counterpart. The red planet trench is 2,500 miles long and up to four miles deep. (CNN) The authors of a new study say that while enormous surges of water carved out sprawling networks of valleys on Mars eons ago, the young red planet was hardly a steamy greenhouse with long-lasting oceans, as some scientists have theorized. Researchers with NASA and the University of Colorado say the canyons most likely were formed during brief bouts of torrential rains, when asteroid and comet chunks collided with Mars and unleashed frozen water. They propose that the flurry of impacts produced periodic layers of hot debris that blanketed the surface, warming it above the freezing point of water for decades or centuries at a stretch.

Report: Mars volcanoes possibly still active
larger Olympus Mons on Mars is the tallest known volcano in the solar system By Richard Stenger CNN.com Writer (CNN) Volcanoes on the red planet could have melted ice and produced water necessary for life. They also could still be active, planetary scientists said this week. The volcanoes heated up ground ice on Mars and caused the melted water to flow downhill, which carved channels that today appear in satellite images as dry riverbeds radiating away from the volcanic centers, the researchers theorized. The University of Buffalo geologists studied Mars satellite images of two older volcanoes to produce their findings, which they presented at the annual Lunar and Planetary Science Conference in Houston, Texas. MESSAGE BOARD Destination Mars "What's most intriguing about these volcanoes is that they are surrounded by channels," said lead investigator Tracey Gregg. "Of all the volcanoes on Mars, these volcanoes have the largest and greatest numbers of channels associated with them, indicating that there was a lot of water around when they were forming."

Mars Orbiter Camera
Captioned Image Releases
The Mars Global Surveyor (MGS) Mars Orbiter Camera (MOC) first acquired images of Mars during its approach to the red planet in mid-1997. The spacecraft began orbiting Mars in September 1997. Following a period of aerobraking to achieve a nearly-circular, nearly-polar orbit, MGS began systematic mapping operations in March 1999. The primary mission was conducted for one Mars year, through January 2001. An extended mission phase followed. MGS and MOC are currently expected to operate through at least December 2006. Hundreds of MOC images with captions describing their contents have been compiled and released by the MOC team at Malin Space Science Systems since 1997. The links below provide access to these captioned releases. Click on one of the links below for an index, with icons, of images released during that month. MAD: MPEG Audio Decoder
Introduction
MAD is a high-quality MPEG audio decoder. It currently supports MPEG-1 and the MPEG-2 MAD does not yet support MPEG-2 multichannel audio (although it should be backward compatible with such streams) nor does it currently support AAC. MAD has the following special features:
  • 24-bit PCM output 100% fixed-point (integer) computation completely new implementation based on the ISO/IEC standards available under the terms of the GNU General Public License (GPL)
Because MAD provides full 24-bit PCM output, applications using MAD are able to produce exceptionally high quality audio. Even when the output device supports only 16-bit PCM, applications can use the extra resolution to increase the audible dynamic range through the use of dithering or noise shaping. Because MAD uses integer computation rather than floating point, it is well suited for architectures without a floating point unit. All calculations are performed with a 32-bit fixed-point integer representation.
