Marquetry - An exciting form of woodworking.
A General Overview of Making a Picture, from Start to Finish. (Knife cutting method) M arquetry is a craft which requires very little in the way of space and a few tools as well. As for materials, most marquetry kits come complete with all the necessary veneers, a back board for mounting the work, and two copies of a pattern. In addition to this, one must acquire on one's own, a few other items for completing the work. To begin with, one should have a cutting board at least 12" x 12"; somewhat larger would be better if larger pictures are contemplated. The purpose of this board is to provide a work surface on which veneers may be cut without damaging the kitchen table, or wherever else one happens to be working. On the cutting board, it is suggested that a piece of cardboard be used, such as the back of a writing pad. This is optional, but its use will help to prolong the life of the cutting blade. Next is the cutting knife. The X-Acto knifes are recommended, although any other having sharp pointed blades, and being easy to handle will do. With the X-Acto knife, the #11 or #24 blades are best. Exactly which of the two will depend on the type of knife which is selected. An ordinary pencil is required, along with a piece of carbon paper, preferably a pencil carbon. This is used for tracing the pattern to be cut onto the wood veneers. As the various pieces are cut from the veneers, they should be assembled and held in place with cellophane tape.

Several years after graduating from high school, Jane followed her parents and brother from South Africa to Paraguay, where her father had started a sawmill and furniture factory. She lived in Paraguay for eight years before coming to the United States settling first in Massachusetts, then moving to Miami, and finally to Atlanta, her current home.

"This shows the finished sheet of marquetry before it was applied to the music box I made for it. The main veneer used for the background of the butterfly is Masur Birch. The butterfly itself is made with Sapele, the sapwood of Cherry and Ebony." 2001
    Secret Garden
"This is a band saw box made out of a solid piece of Mahogany. It has two small boxes inside, which are lined with Poplar. The marquetry is done with Lacewood, Poplar, Madrone Burl and Masur Birch. The finish is lacquer."
Size: 6 x 6 x 2.75". 2001 Since her father owned a sawmill and furniture manufacturing business there, Jane was exposed anew to woodworking. She was the personnel manager of the carpentry section for nine months before moving to the capital city, Asuncion. It was there, too, that she was exposed to marquetry through her boyfriend, whose family owned a fine furniture shop. She made several marquetry sheets and realized she also needed to learn to make something to put them on. Since she was apprenticing part time at her father's factory, she "slowly but surely" picked up tips from the craftsmen who worked there. According to Jane, "the hands-on experience I got there was a wonderful way to get involved in such a diverse craft."

    History
Along with stone, mud, and animal parts, wood was certainly one of the first materials worked by primitive man. Indeed, the development of civilization was closely tied to the development of increasingly greater degrees of skill in working these materials. Two ancient civilizations to use woodworking are the Egyptians and the Chinese. Woodworking is depicted in many ancient Egyptian drawings. There are also copies of ancient egyptian work, such as chairs, that still exist. The metal used for this by the Egyptians was probably bronze or even straight copper, as ironworking was not developed until much later. Feng Shui , the ancient Chinese practice of geomancy . It mentions almost nothing of the intricate glue-less nailless joinery for which Chinese furniture was so famous.

    Where Elegance Meets Art
by Michael Dresdner marquetry inlaid veneers fitted together to form a design or picture that is then used to ornament furniture View Large That dictionary definition sounds simple enough, but in the hands of Silas Kopf, the simple quickly becomes sublime. Working with one employee in a Northampton, Massachusetts, atelier, Kopf produces exquisitely made furniture lavishly adorned with marquetry of such dazzling beauty that it takes your breath away. His pieces grace some of the finest personal and museum collections in the country, and for good reason. They are, quite simply, amazing. “Inlay has been part of our culture since Egyptian times,” says Kopf. “But as I looked around at people who appeared to be successful, like Wendell Castle, Sam Maloof, George Nakashima, and others, they all had a signature style, and marquetry seemed up for grabs.” He grabbed it with a vengeance, learning not only marquetry, but also parquetry, inlay, and trompe l'oeil. View Large Marquetry is essentially a jigsaw puzzle put together out of veneers, including the background, and glued onto a substrate. Parquetry is similar, but creates repeating geometric patterns rather than pictures. Herringbone, for example, is parquetry, and lends its name to “parquet flooring.” With inlay, the shape is routed into a solid background, and set in rather than overlaid. The two are visually indistinguishable if done correctly. Trompe l'oeil, from the French meaning “fool the eye,” is marquetry done so adroitly as to make the flat picture appear three-dimensional.

American Folk Marquetry from the Hirschhorn Collection
By Karla Klein Albertson NEW YORK CITY - Woodworking skills were once passed down from father to son, in much the same way that mothers taught daughters to sew. In fact, marquetry, an overlay technique in which wood chips and veneers were assembled in intricate patterns, is often referred to as "men's quilting." Just as piecing enlivened humble bed linens, marquetry designs added visual interest to homemade pieces of furniture. While most woodworkers were of average ability, some carpenters - fueled by an inner vision - labored long hours to produce masterpieces in wood. Intricate marquetry furniture from the Nineteenth and early Twentieth Centuries has long been a star player at major Americana shows, where an individual example, often priced in the four to five-figure range, may be the centerpiece of a dealer's display.
