Using exotic wood veneers is a great way to turn a normal woodworking project into an exotic piece of fine artwork. And its easy. We have all the instructions. Try a sample box of fine wood veneers , find an old iron in the local flea market, and start experimenting with the technique. It really is as simple as gluing it down to a piece of plywood, and trimming the edges. Check out our page on how to work with veneers for some great suggestions. None of our veneers are paper backed so you can say, glue a burled walnut crotch veneer to a solid piece of walnut and the seam line becomes almost invisible. You now have a solid piece of exotic wood to incorporate into your next small box. For the more experienced, we have a selection of veneers sorted by wood species ... links to: Hardwood veneers for sale Exotic Wood Veneers for sale Have lots of fun.. Winnie the Pooh Marquetry
By Mark Gunter
The photos presented below are in the GIF format to facilitate faster loading. You may click on any photo for a larger JPEG image with a little better quality. As I worked on my second marquetry project - Winnie the Pooh - I decided to snap a few photos to illustrate the process used. First, you need a shop drawing or pattern to use in cutting out the veneers for marquetry. I began with a coloring book drawing, and modified it until it was workable with veneers. The key is that you must not have drawings that depend on open lines for the pictures. Your lines must be closed, that is they need to form shapes that can be cut from wood. Winnie's ear became a "tab" ear on the shop drawing; his smile became the lower line of a muzzle; etc.
Click any image for jpeg enlargement. Once I got the drawing ready, I made several copies for use as patterns. One copy is used for reference, and it's marked with the veneer species for each piece (at left). The work on pooh was mostly done when I started these photos. The pattern on the right was used for most of the body parts. The one at top was used for pooh's left leg and foot.

Infiniti Logo Marquetry
By Mark Gunter
Infiniti Logo
This was a very simple logo marquetry that I was able to incorporate into one of my commercial projects. The marquetry forms a center cap where the four half-walls of a cubicle meet. I built the cubicle with figured cherry veneer plywood and solid cherry top and end caps. This matching center cap is a square of solid cherry laid up with cherry and maple veneers. To make this logo, I used the following procedure:
  • Cut the square cherry blank to near-finished size
  • Formed an eight-piece pie match with cherry veneer for the groundwork
  • Cut out the logo in a piece of maple veneer and into the cherry groundwork simultaneously
  • Trimmed the veneer fancy face and pressed it to the cherry blank (Titebond® and clamp pressure with cauls)
  • Trimmed the piece to final size
  • Routed profile around the edges

ORIGINS and HISTORY OF MARQUETRY Marquetry is the art of assembling veneers from hundreds of species of wood, sometimes interspersed with gems, ivory, mother of pearl, etc. to collectively form a picture or design. It was practiced by the Egyptians over 3000 years ago, and priceless boxes, panels and furniture enriched with designs in colourful woods were left in the pyramids. Other examples of inlay appeared in Asia Minor around 350 B.C. These were marble inlays. By present definition, their work is called inlay because it involved recessed areas into which small cut pieces of colourful wood were inset or inlaid. The term marquetry refers to cut pieces of native and exotic woods, sliced into veneer thickness, assembled as a design into a single sheet and then glued to a solid surface, usually wood, hardboard or particle board. After the fall of the Roman Empire a few workshops survived in Italy. In the 14th and 15th centuries dramatic changes took place in marquetry methods. Schools of marquetry were set up, the most famous being in Florence. The veneers of this period were very thick and were shaped with a chisel. From Italy marquetry spread all over Europe. In the 17th and 18th centuries France further developed and refined the art.

Marquetry using colored straw was a specialty of some European spa resorts from the end of the 18th century. The simplest kind of marquetry uses only two sheets of veneer, which are temporarily glued together and cut with a fine saw, producing two contrasting panels of identical design, (in French called partie and contre-partie , "part" and "counterpart"). Simple geometric marquetry designs reminiscent of basketwork, tiling or trelliswork, are often called 'parquetry,' in reference to the similar patterning of parquet flooring.
