SASKATCHEWAN WOODWORKERS' GUILD
Background The Saskatchewan Woodworkers' Guild had its beginnings in 1978 when a group of woodworkers met informally to share ideas with others who had a common interest in working with wood. Since that time the guild has grown to include members from all walks of life, both professional woodworkers and hobbyists. Interests of the members include all phases of woodworking from carving, turning, marquetry and cabinet making to finishing and restoration. We welcome anyone with an interest in "woody" things to join our guild .
Annual Wood Show
Every year, the Saskatchewan Woodworkers' Guild sponsors a show to display the works of its members. This show is open to the public for viewing, and its primary purpose is to educate the public and raise awareness of the beauty and diversity of works that can be created from wood. A cross-section of the works displayed at the show reflects the efforts of both the artisan and the novice woodworker. The annual show also provides members with an opportunity to improve their woodworking skills. Preparing a piece of work for display provides the motivation to strive for one's personal best and expand on their woodworking knowledge. It is also a platform to share the creativity and craftmanship with other members and the general public.
Monthly Meetings
Sharing of ideas and experiences by fellow crafts-people is one of the biggest benefits gained by members at monthly meetings. Meetings are held on the third Thursday of every month except except July and August. As an introduction to the Guild you are invited to attend a monthly meeting as a guest.

  • Inlaid Serving Tray: Veneers for Marquetry From " Wood Works "
    episode WWK-508
David Marks builds this handcrafted serving tray with a delicate leaf-design inlay. The design was fashioned through the woodworking technique known as marquetry creating a picture or image by inlaying veneers of four distinct woods in varying shades. In this episode of DIY Wood Works , host David Marks builds a handmade serving tray with beautiful marquetry inlay. Marquetry the art of "painting with wood" is the focus of this project as a variety of wood veneers are used to create a free-flowing leaf design that's assembled and laid out onto a single background sheet of satin-wood veneer. Rich yellow satinwood, highly figured olive wood, zebra wood and bubinga are cut to form the artwork. The delicate inlay is cut to fit the background perfectly by bevel-cutting pieces simultaneously using a scroll saw and tiny saw-blade. Once the wood "painting" is complete, the artwork is glued to a substrate to form the base of the tray. The frame of the tray is created by cove-cutting and hand-sculpting bubinga to form smooth outward-bending arc. The construction of the tray is a simple frame and panel. The 8/4-stock bubinga frame is joined with biscuits. For form and function, a decorative cove is cut into the ends to serve as a handle. Once the marquetry is complete, the bottom of the tray is finished by laminating two slices of yellow satin-wood onto an apple-plywood core.

    VENEERING, MARQUETRY AND INLAY
    Fine WoodWorking ANNOTATION

An excellent book that deals with these 3 subjects from the perspective of actual projects. It gives a good description of how veneers are produced at a mill. I particularly like the projects that deal with vacuum presses. There is a good article on the marquetry of Vadim Aksyeonov, a Russian artist who creates 'wooden' renderings of Russian landmarks. Finally there is reference made to the art of marquetry with an extract from the book called Marquetry by Pierre Ramond. There are several examples of his work and some of the students from l'Ecole Boulle which will give you an idea of the scope and range of this medium. This is a good reference book for the advanced users of veneers particularly in the area of veneer application and the use of woodworking tools.
COVER Veneering, marquetry and inlay are great ways to dress up your woodworking. In these 23 articles from the pages of Fine Woodworking magazine, you'll get the best technical advice available, with information on everything from sawing your own veneers to creating inlay patterns freehand. There's even advice on working materials like birch bark, silver and turquoise. If you're looking for a way to expand your woodworking repertoire, this collection of articles is a great place to start. The "Best of Fine Woodworking series spans over ten years of Fine Woodworking magazine. In book form for the first time, the material is organized by subject and indexed for easy reference. There is no duplication between these books and the popular "Fine Woodworking on..." series.

    History
Along with stone, mud, and animal parts, wood was certainly one of the first materials worked by primitive human beings. Indeed, the development of civilization was closely tied to the development of increasingly greater degrees of skill in working these materials. Among early finds of wooden tools are the worked sticks from Kalambo Falls Clacton-on-Sea and Lehringen . The spears from Sch¶ningen Germany ) provide some of the first examples of wooden hunting gear. Flint tools were used for carving. Since neolithic times, carved wooden vessels are known, for example from the Linear Pottery culture wells at K¼ckhofen and Eythra . Examples of Bronze Age wood-carving include trees worked into coffins from northern Germany and Denmark , and wooden folding-chairs. The site of Fellbach-Schmieden in Germany has provided fine examples of wooden animal statues from the Iron Age . Wooden idols from the La T¨ne period are known from a sanctuary at the source of the Seine in France Two ancient civilizations that used woodworking were the Egyptians and the Chinese . Woodworking is depicted in many ancient Egyptian drawings, and some ancient Egyptian
