Bodies of 6 Marines recovered from Pakistan crash
KANDAHAR, Afghanistan (CNN) Investigators have recovered six of seven bodies of U.S. Marines killed Wednesday when their KC-130 military refueling plane crashed in western Pakistan, U.S. military officials in Kandahar, Afghanistan, said Saturday. The bodies will be transported to Ramstein Air Base in Germany and then to Dover Air Force Base in Delaware, according to Maj. Brad Lowell, a spokesman for U.S. Central Command. The recovery operation is ongoing, and the Marines said they are hopeful they will recover the other body. US Navy and US Marine Corps Aircraft Serial Numbers and Bureau Numbers1911 to Present
The United States Navy acquired its first aircraft in 1911, a Curtiss Triad pusher floatplane. Originally, the US Navy assigned serial numbers to its airplanes sequentially by manufacturer, a separate sequence of numbers for each manufacturer. The serial number had two parts. The first part was a letter which designated the manufacturer A for Curtiss, B for Wright, etc. The letter was followed by a number to show the sequence of procurement from each manufacturer. For example, the first Curtiss-built Navy airplane was serialed A-1, the second A-2, etc. The system had to be quickly adapted to accommodate different types of airplanes obtained from the same manufacturerCurtiss had to be given another letter, C, to distinguish its flying boats from its pontoon seaplanes, the letter D was assigned to Burgess and Curtis (no relation), and E was assigned to Curtiss amphibians. In March of 1914, this manufacturer-based designation system was abandoned and was replaced by a two-letter type and subtype classification scheme. The first letter was the type or classA stood for Heavier Than Air, B for Free Balloon, C for Dirigible, and D for Kite Balloon. A second letter was used to designate the subtypefor example AH was a hydro airplane, AB was a flying boat, and AX was an amphibian. All of the surviving aircraft acquired under the original scheme were redesignated and reserialed. A separate sequence of serials was assigned to each type/subtype classification.

Marines in action in Afghanistan
U.S. Marines relax against their full battle gear on the amphibious assault ship USS Peleliu on Sunday. WASHINGTON (CNN) The U.S. Marine contingent in Afghanistan will be used to help hunt Taliban and al Qaeda forces on the move around Kandahar, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said Monday. About 500 of an expected 1,000-plus Marines landed south of the Taliban stronghold of Kandahar on Sunday. They were quickly in action, with the Pentagon confirming reports Monday afternoon that U.S. helicopter gunships attacked an armored column near the airstrip they control. "They are not an occupying force," Rumsfeld said. "Their purpose is to establish a forward base of operations to help pressure the Taliban forces in Afghanistan, to prevent Taliban and al Qaeda terrorists from moving freely about the country." The Marine force includes members of the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit of Camp Pendleton, California, aboard the Amphibious Assault Ship USS Peleliu; and the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit of Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, aboard the USS Bataan. Both ships are stationed in the Arabian Sea, off the coast of Pakistan.

KUWAIT CITY, Kuwait
(CNN) When U.S. Marines were fired on by two Kuwaiti nationals during a training exercise Tuesday, they had no way of defending themselves, U.S. officials said. The Marines were practicing urban warfare tactics on Failaka Island in the Persian Gulf and were carrying no ammunition for their weapons, U.S. officials said. One Marine was killed and another was wounded. U.S. military police chased down the two assailants, who were dressed in civilian clothes and driving a pickup truck, and shot them dead, according to the officials. The Kuwait government called the incident a terrorist attack. Three AK-47 assault rifles were found in the civilian vehicle, but it was unclear whether the weapons were those used in the attack, U.S. officials said.

Although born in the U.S., he was educated in France and began his military service in 1932 at the age of 19 with the French Foreign Legion. He was wounded in action and imprisoned by the Germans in 1940. After his escape, he made his way to the U.S. and joined the Marines. As a result of his training and experience, he was awarded a commission, and a special duty assignment as an assistant naval attache in Tangier, Morocco. Once again, Ortiz was wounded while perfoming combat intelligence work in preparation for Allied landings in North Africa. In 1943, as a member of the OSS, he was dropped by parachute into France to aid the Resistance, and assisted in the rescue of four downed RAF pilots. He was recaptured by the Germans in 1944 and spent the remainder of the war as a POW.

SPECIAL REPORT War Tracker On the Scene Map U.S. Iraq ... Special Report SOUTHERN IRAQ (CNN) The 3rd Squadron of the 7th U.S. Cavalry Regiment, lead element of the 3rd Infantry Division, rolled from Kuwait into southern Iraq early Friday, according to a CNN reporter accompanying the troops. The Americans encountered hostile Iraqi army troops as they crossed the border, but using advanced night vision equipment they overcame the resistance, destroying six or seven Iraqi trucks and an undisclosed number of tanks. A group of Kiowa scout helicopters, flying no more than 50 feet above the ground, led a convoy of Bradley fighting vehicles and M1A1 Abrams tanks. The Bradley vehicles moved at times in a single column and at times abreast. Earlier, when halted in Kuwait close to the Iraqi border, a single shell fell near the U.S. forces. The shell affected no part of the convoy, which then began moving quickly north.

Few people know that May 22 is a day set aside to honor our Merchant Marines. Even fewer people know that Anderson, Indiana, has a museum devoted entirely to the merchant seaman of World War II. How Anderson got the museum
The museum was the creation of George R. Canaday, who with his older brother, Joe R. Canaday, served in the Merchant Marine during WWII. Unique is the fact that they served on many of the same ships together, when both were enlisted men and later when they were officers. Most of their service was in the North Atlantic to England and France, although they also served in the Mediterranean, Africa, Italy and Sicily. What the museum contains
The U.S. Merchant Marine Museum is dedicated to the World War II merchant seamen who volunteered to deliver the cargos of men and supplies. The musem contains uniforms, medals and pins, seaman papers, insignia, ships models, ship instruments and a reference book library. At the present time, Mr. Canaday has documented 65 of the merchant seamen, both living and dead, from Madison County. He would be interested in hearing from anyone who served in the Merchant Marines during WWII.

Marines: 'Chemical Ali' held meetings at POW hospital
Gen. Ali Hassan al Majeed, known as “Chemical Ali,” commands Iraqi forces in southern Iraq. Story Tools NASIRIYA, Iraq (CNN) Informants have told U.S. Marines that Gen. Ali Hassan al Majeed, President Saddam Hussein's cousin, recently conducted meetings of the Iraqi resistance in the same hospital in Nasiriya where a U.S. Army soldier was held prisoner. Marines staged raids in southern Iraq seeking al Majeed earlier this week. Al Majeed, the commander of Iraqi forces in southern Iraq, is widely known as "Chemical Ali" for ordering Iraqi forces to use chemical weapons on Kurds in northern Iraq in 1988. According to an officer with a 2nd Marines reconnaissance unit, one informant, whose information was corroborated by other sources, told Marines that Al Majeed has been hiding his identity by dressing up in plain attire, so he can blend into the populace. It was also reported that Al Majeed has been driving around in an old red car, possibly a 1979 Nissan.

    Members of the IC
Relationships with Other Government Organizations The US Marine Corps is one of four military services in the Department of Defense. Like the other Military Services in the Department of Defense, the Intelligence Element of the Marine Corps is an Intelligence Community Member. The Marine Corps is committed to achieving excellence in intelligence capability - tailored to meet the needs of the National Military Strategy and the complexity and rigors of supporting deployed expeditionary forces. Within the Corps, intelligence is an inherent component of the command decision-making process, which "drives operations" and is the foundation upon which plans are developed and executed. Intelligence also provides the basis for all training, doctrine, and equipment development. Marine Corps Intelligence exists to support Marine Corps Service and operational missions in maritime, expeditionary, land, and air warfare. Marine Corps' Contribution to Intelligence
The Marine Corps has a strong tradition of conducting successful operations "in every clime and place." The Intelligence mission is to provide commanders at every level with seamless, tailored, timely, and mission-essential intelligence and to ensure this intelligence is integrated into the operational planning process. Because Marine forces are employed primarily at the operational and tactical levels of war, Marine Corps intelligence activities are oriented toward that level of support. Accordingly, two-thirds of all intelligence Marines serve in the operating forces, with the majority assigned to the staffs and units of tactical commands.
