U.S.M.C. War Memorial
The Marine Corps War Memorial stands as a symbol of this grateful Nation's esteem for the honored dead of the U.S. Marine Corps. While the statue depicts one of the most famous incidents of World War II, the memorial is dedicated to all Marines who have given their lives in the defense of the United States since 1775. The small island of Iwo Jima lies 660 miles south of Tokyo. One of its outstanding geographical features is Mount Suribachi, an extinct volcano that forms the narrow southern tip of the island and rises 550 feet to dominate the area. By February 1945, U.S. troops had recaptured most of the territory taken by the Japanese in 1941 and 1942; still uncaptured was Iwo Jima, which became a primary objective in American plans to bring the Pacific campaign to a successful conclusion. On the morning of February 19, 1945, the 4th and 5th Marine Divisions invaded Iwo Jima after a somewhat ineffective bombardment lasting 72 hours. The 28th Regiment, 5th Division, was ordered to capture Mount Suribachi. They reached the base of the mountain on the afternoon of February 21, and by nightfall the next day had almost completely surrounded it. On the morning of February 23, Marines of Company E, 2nd Battalion, started the tortuous climb up the rough terrain to the top. At about 10:30 a.m., men all over the island were thrilled by the sight of a small American flag flying from atop Mount Suribachi. That afternoon, when the slopes were clear of enemy resistance, a second, larger flag was raised by five Marines and a Navy hospital corpsman: Sgt. Michael Strank, Cpl. Harlon H. Block, Pfc. Franklin R. Sousley, Pfc. Rene A. Gagnon, Pfc. Ira Hayes, and PhM. 2/c John H. Bradley, USN.

Jason Bellini: Marines playing 'street cop'
CNN's Jason Bellini Story Tools NASIRIYA, Iraq (CNN) As other U.S. forces surged toward Baghdad, intense fighting continued deep in southern Iraq. CNN's Jason Bellini, who is embedded with the U.S. 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit, talked with CNN anchor Carol Costello about the fighting in Nasiriya, as well as the dramatic rescue of an American POW in a hospital there early Wednesday. BELLINI: We're in the town of Nasiriya now, and the action we saw was on our way in. The big news has been the very dramatic, very daring POW rescue. The Marines we're embedded with weren't directly involved with that, but they did play a supporting role. The bombardment that they undertook in Nasiriya at two very selected locations was designed to deter attention away from the site where they made that rescue. So it was a very loud, very bright night late last night here in Nasiriya. SPECIAL REPORT War Tracker On the Scene Map U.S.

Walter Rodgers: Marines await action near Kandahar
CNN's Walter Rodgers CNN's Walter Rodgers is part of a pool of reporters at the outpost established by U.S. Marines in southern Afghanistan. He spoke Saturday with CNN's Kyra Phillips. RODGERS: It's night here in the deserts of southern Afghanistan, and U.S. Marine light armored vehicles are fanning out on reconnaissance missions. Nightly patrols are searching out any pockets of Taliban resistance or perhaps efforts by the Taliban to infiltrate and penetrate the perimeter of the makeshift air base the Marines have established. The Marines' actual contact with the Taliban has been limited so far. These light armored units are supported by Cobra helicopters, and in the darkness of the desert night, everyone wears night-vision goggles. RESOURCES Go on the scene with CNN The problem for the Marines is the Taliban have integrated themselves into the civilian population in southern Afghanistan. That means that as the Marines discover cars crisscrossing the desert at night, they must determine who are the real civilians and who is carrying gasoline and other supplies to the remaining Taliban fighters in this area some of whom are believed to still have Soviet-vintage tanks and armor.

128. Supporting Our Marines
A site dedicated to providing support to marines through the postal service and email.
http://www.marinefamily.com/SOM/
SOM is an organization made up of volunteers worldwide who are dedicated to to supporting, not just our Marines but all other military branches, throughout every aspect of their military career. From boot camp, through training as well as deployments, and even into VA Homes or hospitals, we support our service members. We send them support through U.S. mail , e-mail and care packages. We are extremely proud of all we have accomplished over the last 5 years and look forward to an exciting future! We hope you'll take a few minutes to look over the rest of our information and get to know what makes SOM not only amazing but truly different from the rest.
Of course if you are in a hurry though to get to the rest of the site and join us in our dedication to our troops, or as a service member wanting to get started receiving support, then please, skip to the next page
How is SOM different?
You are probably asking yourself what makes SOM different from the numerous pen pal groups that have sprouted up over the last 2 years or so. That is easy! Years before September 11th and Operation Enduring Freedom we were here supporting our military while they were the forgotten men and women. While the same people in this country who today call jet noise " the sound of freedom," and were fighting over reducing our military's size and budget, we were here, quietly supporting our service members behind the scenes. To members of SOM, patriotism and supporting our troops isn't a fad or something you do during a time of conflict or war. Supporting our military is something we do EVERY DAY! That is what makes us unique!

134. U.S. Merchant Marine In Vietnam
American Merchant Marine in Vietnam War, including role and casualties suffered by chartered merchant and Military Sea Transportation Service seamen.
http://www.usmm.org/vietnam.html
U.S. Merchant Marine, Military Sea Transportation Service , and Military Sealift Command in Vietnam In February 1951 the Military Sea Transportation Service (MSTS) aircraft carrier Windham Bay , was the first large ship to navigate the Long Tam River since 1925. While the ship was docked at Saigon (French Indochina) 17 hand grenades were tossed at the ship by terrorists. The Military Sea Transportation Service was established in 1949 to provide sea transportation to the military as a successor to the Army Transportation Service. MSTS operated a fleet of ships and had charter agreements with commercial shipping firms. MSTS was succeeded by Military Sealift Command. In 1954, after the partitioning of Vietnam, MSTS evacuated Vietnamese refugees from North to South Vietnam. USNS Howze was one of many MSTS ships involved in "Passage to Freedom" bringing 300,000 refugees and 200,000 tons of Cargo from North Vietnam. [Your webmistress arrived in the United States in 1949 on the USAT General R. L. Howze as a refugee of World War II.] The Military Sea Transportation Service had the job of bringing war supplies to Vietnam 10,000 miles from the Pacific coast. MSTS had four separate customers to serve: the Army, Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps. MSTS ships were staffed by "civilian" crews, but carried 95% of the supplies used by our Armed Forces in Vietnam including bombs and ammunition into combat zones under fire. Crew members were given Navy grades and rank identification in event of enemy capture. During Vietnam, MSTS first utilized roll-on/roll-off ships and container ships which speeded loading and unloading.

Marines finish searching Taliban compound
U.S. Marines return to their base in an armored vehicle. KANDAHAR, Afghanistan (CNN) About 200 U.S. Marines returned to base here in the pre-dawn hours Wednesday after conducting a search of a walled compound where it is believed Taliban supreme leader Mullah Mohammed Omar once stayed. Anti-Taliban forces said Omar is believed to have abandoned the compound in the last three weeks, and Marine officers described the search as an intelligence gathering mission to find out what al Qaeda or Taliban fighters might have left behind. The compound, described as a massive complex with at least 14 separate buildings, is in Helmand province, just west of the Marines' Kandahar base. The Marines returned in light armored vehicles and Humvees after being gone for about 30 hours.
