14 US Marines killed in Western Iraq
By Times Online and agencies
Fourteen US Marines were killed in western Iraq today when their armoured vehicle was hit by a roadside bomb near the Syrian border. NI_MPU('middle'); A civilian interpreter was also killed by the most lethal "improvised explosive device" deployed against US forces since the invasion of March 2003. The attack pushed the number of US military personnel killed in Iraq past 1,800. The attack happened in the restive al-Anbar province, a tribal region that is at the heart of Iraq's Sunni Muslim insurgency. An estimated 25,000 Marines are stationed in the province. The Marines killed today were from the same Ohio-based battalion which lost six Marines to an ambush on Monday. An extremist organisation linked to al-Qaeda claimed in an internet posting that some of the Marines, who had been on sniper duty, had their throats slit. The attack followed the death of an American freelance journalist, Steven Vincent, who had been writing about police death squads operating with impunity under the noses of British troops in the southern city of Basra. Vincent was abducted last night by a group of men in a police car and shot three times in the chest.

Henderson Hall News A remembrance ceremony was held at the Arlington National Cemetery Saturday to remember the Marines who were victimized by a gruesome terrorist attack 21 years ago. On October 23, 1983 at 6:22 a.m., a large delivery truck drove to the Beirut International Airport where the Marine Barracks was located. After turning onto an access road leading to the compound, the driver rushed through a barbed-wire fence, passed between two sentry posts, crashed through the gate, and slammed into the lobby of the barracks. The driver detonated explosives with the power equal to more than 12,000 pounds of TNT. The explosion crumbled the four-story building, crushing service members to death while they were sleeping. The terrorist attack killed 220 Marines and 21 other U.S. service members who were stationed there to help keep the peace in a nation torn by war.

Marines going to Tora Bora to hunt bin Laden
Outgoing President Burhanuddin Rabbani, left, embraces Afghanistan's new leader Hamid Karzai. SUMMARY: U.S. military officials said Monday that the movement of U.S. Marines into the mountains of eastern Afghanistan to search for Osama bin Laden is "imminent." Meanwhile, Afghan leader Hamid Karzai appointed an early critic of his interim government to a key defense post. And a man accused of trying to set off explosives on a trans-Atlantic flight made his first court appearance Monday. UPDATE: The Marines' mission to hunt for bin Laden is the reason U.S. warplanes have stopped bombing the Tora Bora region, military officials said. U.S. Special Forces will accompany the Marines as they search the network of caves and tunnels for bin Laden and his al Qaeda followers. Karzai named Northern Alliance Gen. Abdul Rashid Dostum as his deputy defense minister. Dostum, an ethnic Uzbek, had been critical of the interim Afghan government, saying it didn't adequately represent the anti-Taliban Northern Alliance. "We have a very old, good relationship, my brother Gen. Dostum," Karzai said.

Gunfire erupts after detainees leave Kandahar
U.S. Marines escort detainees at Kandahar airport Wednesday. (CNN) Gunfire erupted Thursday shortly after a C-17 transport plane containing 20 al Qaeda and Taliban detainees took off from a U.S. military base in southern Afghanistan. The gunfire was not directed at the plane, which had taken off about 15 minutes earlier, a U.S. Central Command spokesman told CNN. U.S. Marines at Kandahar International Airport answered the small arms fire with M-16 rifles and machine guns. Two Marine Cobra helicopters canvassed the area and tracer fire crisscrossed overhead. The sedated, hooded prisoners were chained to their seats after boarding the aircraft under heavy security. The C-17 will stop in an undisclosed location, at which point the detainees will be transferred to a C-141 transport plane and taken to the U.S. naval base in Guantanamo, Cuba. Many of the 331 other detainees in Kandahar, including 45 brought there Wednesday night, will eventually be moved to Cuba, where U.S. military personnel are constructing a detention center. (

Search focuses on southern Afghanistan
A convoy of trucks carry surrendering Taliban fighters across the Bangi Bridge on the Konduz front line on Saturday. SUMMARY: U.S. forces are searching for Taliban leaders and Osama bin Laden around the Afghan cities of Kandahar and Jalalabad, the U.S. commander in the region said Tuesday. Meanwhile, Afghan groups gathered in Germany to hammer out a framework for a post-Taliban government in Afghanistan. UPDATE: Gen. Tommy Franks, the chief of the U.S. Central Command, said Tuesday U.S. and allied intelligence sources have led coalition forces to pay "very close attention" to the areas surrounding Kandahar and Jalalabad. But Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld noted those areas were not the only places the U.S.-led coalition is looking for bin Laden. ( Full story Author Larry Goodson said the caves and tunnels of southern Afghanistan are unlikely to be destroyed strictly by aerial attack and could allow Taliban troops and al Qaeda operatives to move long distances without surfacing. At 12:30 in the morning of May 10, approximately 20 U.S. Marines executed a military assault on the Port-au-Prince home of 69-year-old Annette Auguste, a.k.a. Souer Anne.  Auguste’s residence is part of a compound that includes four other apartments that were also invaded by the U.S. military forces.  The troops covered the heads of 11 Haitians with black hoods and then forced them to lay face down on the ground while binding their wrists with plastic manacles behind their backs. The victims of this terrifying U.S. military invasion included five-year-old Chamyr Samedi, 10-year-old Kerlande Philippe, 12-year-old Loubahida Augustine, 14-year-old Luckman Augustine, and seven adults. The Marines blew up a vehicle and a substantial part of Auguste’s three-story house, leaving behind c4 and c5 explosives paraphernalia including blasting caps and igniters. Not a single member of the Haitian National Police force (PNH) or the de facto Haitian government was present when the U.S. forces attacked the residence, said the arrestees.  All the detainees except Auguste were released after questioning.

CAMP LEJEUNE, North Carolina (CNN) Defense attorneys on Wednesday began describing U.S. Marine Capt. Richard Ashby's version of events that led his EA-6B Prowler jet to sever a ski gondola cable last year in Italy, sending the car crashing to the ground. All 20 people aboard were killed. The defense opened its case after the prosecution rested earlier in the day. Prosecutors had questioned 55 witnesses during 11 days of testimony. Ashby is being court-martialed on charges of manslaughter in the February 3, 1998, incident near Cavalese The first two defense witnesses to testify members of Ashby's squadron said they considered Ashby an excellent pilot. Ashby is expected to testify in his own defense.
