Floods and landslides following four violent storms in two weeks have left about 1,000 people dead or missing. Some 40 marines, the first of a total of up to 600 troops, have arrived at a former US base north of Manila. The US said the move was in response to a request from the Philippine government, which says the storms have wreaked millions of dollars of damage. Up to a dozen transport aircraft and helicopters are accompanying the troops, the Pentagon said in a statement. "This is a serious endeavour. The safety and well-being of the Filipinos are a top priority and we're responding as best we can in as speedy and effective a way," said US military spokesman Dennis Williams. The BBC's Nick Childs at the Pentagon says the US and the Philippines maintain a strong alliance and close friendship.

Four are known to have died and 23 were wounded by a powerful suicide car bomb near a US military convoy in Baghdad. And gunmen shot dead the head of Abu Ghraib police station, a hospital manager and two ministry officials. Announcing the marines' deaths, the Pentagon said they were killed in action but did not give details. One unofficial report says they were a six-man sniper team. The troops were killed near Haditha, some 200km (125 miles) north-west of Baghdad - an area of Anbar province near the Syrian border that has seen frequent insurgents attacks on US troops. Insurgents were said to have handed out leaflets in the streets of Haditha claiming they were responsible for the marines' deaths.

Kandahar isolated as opposition gears up
SUMMARY: Allied bombing Monday destroyed two bridges leading out of Kandahar, Afghanistan, further isolating the Taliban's last stronghold, as Afghan opposition forces and U.S. Marines prepared for a possible final assault on the southern city. Meanwhile in Germany, a revised draft agreement put forth by the United Nations for an interim post-Taliban government in Afghanistan was close to being finalized, sources said Monday. UPDATE: Kandahar has only one access and exit route, almost isolating it from the surrounding countryside, CNN has learned. Airstrikes pounded the Kandahar area Sunday night and Monday, mostly centered on the airport east of the city. ( Full story Maj. James "Bo" Higgins, an intelligence officer with the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit, said the military campaign for Kandahar had reached "a culmination point." Higgins said no decision had been taken to commit U.S. Marines to the coming battle for Kandahar, but Afghan opposition forces were moving toward Kandahar from the north and southeast. (

BAGHDAD, Aug. 5 U.S. and Iraqi forces struck back at insurgents Friday, storming a cluster of northwestern towns in a region where 22 Marines have been killed this week. The assault near the city of Haditha, in violence-plagued Anbar province, came as politicians seeking to complete a draft of a new Iraqi constitution by Aug. 15 suffered a setback. Leaders of the committee writing the document and top government officials postponed until Sunday a meeting scheduled to work through several remaining sticking points. The delay came after Massoud Barzani, the president of the Kurdish area of northern Iraq who is pushing for greater regional autonomy, decided to remain in the Kurdish capital of Irbil to huddle with his parliament before traveling to Baghdad to negotiate. The assault in Anbar began before 6 a.m., as 180 Iraqi soldiers and 900 members of the 2nd Marine Division, backed by M1-A1 Abrams tanks, helicopters and jets bearing 500-pound bombs, stormed into Haditha, Haqlaniyah and other small towns along the Euphrates River where military officials say insurgents are mustering to launch attacks. Iraqi special operations forces helped direct U.S. airstrikes Friday morning, according to a military news release.

Pentagon: al Qaeda regrouping in Afghanistan
U.S. Marines at the Kandahar International Airport carry 25mm ammunition. (CNN) Some members of Osama bin Laden's al Qaeda terrorist network may be regrouping in Afghanistan and forming smaller groups that could resurface later, a Pentagon spokesman said Wednesday. "We believe those dangerous groups are still in Afghanistan," Rear Adm. John Stufflebeem told a Pentagon news briefing. Stufflebeem said many other al Qaeda fighters, who were targeted by U.S. airstrikes and flushed from the mountainous Tora Bora region of eastern Afghanistan, probably fled into Pakistan. Anti-Taliban forces are trying to negotiate the surrender about 1,500 heavily armed Taliban fighters, who fled Kandahar before the city fell last month. The group has taken up positions about 120 miles northwest of Kandahar, near Baghran in Helmand Province. There are reports that the group may be sheltering Taliban leader Mullah Mohammed Omar and possibly bin Laden, but Stufflebeem said there was no conclusive evidence that the men are together.

14 Marines Die in Huge Explosion in Western Iraq
Week's Toll Rises to 21 For Ohio-Based Regiment
By Ellen Knickmeyer Washington Post Foreign Service Thursday, August 4, 2005; Page A01 BAGHDAD, Aug. 3 A Marine Reserve company that was known as "Lucky Lima" before suffering heavy casualties in May was hit Wednesday by the deadliest roadside bombing of the Iraq war, a massive explosion that killed 14 Marines and the unit's Iraqi interpreter, according to witnesses and military spokesmen. The Marines were part of a convoy that was attacked on a desert road outside the western town of Haditha, one witness said. Rolling in armored vehicle after armored vehicle, the patrol was nearing the entrance to the town when a brilliant flash erupted in the middle of the convoy.

Bush: 'We're smoking them out'
A landing craft carrying U.S. Marines exits the assault ship USS Peleliu Wednesday in the Arabian Sea. Military officials say the Marines took command of a secret airstrip in southern Afghanistan Monday. var clickExpire = "-1"; //> (CNN) President Bush said Monday U.S. forces were smoking out the people responsible for the September 11 attacks, and stressed Afghanistan "is just the beginning" in the war on terrorism. "I said a long time ago, one of our objectives is to smoke them out and get them running and bring them to justice," Bush said. "We're smoking them out. They're running. And now we're going to bring them to justice. I also said we'll use whatever means necessary to achieve that objective and that's exactly what we're going to do." Bush said the United States has entered a "dangerous period" in the war against terrorism and warned that Americans should expect some U.S. combat deaths.

U.S. Marines likely to lead peacekeeping mission in Kosovo
February 12, 1999
Web posted at: 8:36 p.m. EST (0136 GMT) WASHINGTON (CNN) U.S. Marines may lead the way if the United States sends any ground troops on a peacekeeping mission into Kosovo, Pentagon sources said Friday. Kosovo is an embattled province of Serbia, the main Yugoslav republic. During the past year, more than 2,000 people have been killed and hundreds of thousands driven from their homes by clashes between the majority ethnic Albanians and Serbian security forces. Pentagon sources said current plans call for some 2,200 Marines, now on ships in the Mediterranean, to be dispatched to Kosovo. Those Marines would remain in place until more heavily armed Army troops could be brought in from Germany.

U.S. Marines on Thursday inspect the site near Haditha, Iraq, where a roadside bomb destroyed an amphibious assault vehicle Wednesday, killing 14 Marines and a civilian interpreter.
WASHINGTON - The deaths of 22 Marines this week in Iraq, including one more on Thursday, has brought to the surface this tragic fact: that branch of the U.S. military has taken casualties disproportionate to its numbers in Iraq. The Marines have one of the roughest assignments in Iraq: pacifying the perpetually restive Anbar province, home to Fallujah, Ramadi and Haditha, all sites of heavy American casualties since the insurgency went into high gear last year. Marines number more than 23,000 out of 138,000 members of the U.S. armed forces in Iraq, or 17 percent. Yet they have lost at least 530 of the more than 1,820 U.S. personnel who have died there, or 29 percent, Marine officials said. On Thursday, a Marine was killed in Ramadi by small arms fire, the military said. A day earlier, 14 Marines were killed when a roadside bomb detonated under their amphibious assault vehicle in Haditha in western Iraq. Two days before that, seven other Marines died, six in Haditha and one nearby.

BAGHDAD, Iraq - A Marine amphibious assault vehicle patrolling during combat operations in the Euphrates River valley hit a roadside bomb Wednesday, killing 14 Marines from the same Ohio battalion that lost six men two days ago. It was the single deadliest roadside bombing of U.S. troops in Iraq. Also, an American freelance journalist was found dead in the southern Iraqi city of Basra, the U.S. Embassy said. Steven Vincent was shot multiple times hours after he and his Iraqi translator were abducted Tuesday evening at gunpoint, police said. On Thursday, meanwhile, the U.S. military said a Marine was killed in action during operations in the volatile city of Ramadi.
