Grade Level: Beginning
MAMMALS: There are 5 whales swimming through the ocean. They meet up with 7 dolphins. How many mammals are there altogether?
Grade Level: Beginning
A WALRUS CALF: A walrus calf (baby) is learning to swim. During his lessons a calf will sometimes hold onto its mother's flipper. The calf swims awhile and then clings to the flipper of his mom. He then holds onto his mom's flipper 5 more times. How many times does the calf hold onto his mother's flipper?
Grade Level: Beginning
HOW MANY FISH: In the ocean depth many fish are swimming. Pretend that you can swim with the fish and that you have a net to catch some with. You catch 2 fish at one time and then swim farther and catch 6 more fish. How many fish have you caught altogether?
Grade Level: Intermediate
TWELVE DOLPHINS: 12 dolphins are swimming through the water at 20 miles per hour. There are 4 plastic rings and each of the dolphins swim through the rings. How many times are the rings used by the dolphins to swim through?
Grade Level: Intermediate
MARINE ANIMALS: Many marine animals are masters of "flight" and speed under the water. Some can swim up to 12,500 miles to migrate. These are the Gray Whales that migrate from the far north to breeding grounds off California. If they swim about 200 miles a day, how many days will it take for them to reach their destination in California?

Deep Sea Trawlers Threaten Exotic Marine Life
Environmentalists are voicing alarm over the deep sea harvesting of exotic fish. Related Resources Oceans Index A British professor says deep sea trawlers - with more powerful engines, sturdier winches and stronger cables - may be wiping out exotic marine life faster than it can be discovered. University of York Professor of Environment, Callum Roberts, Friday addressed the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. In his Boston address, Professor Roberts compared today's deep sea trawling, at depths of 900 meters and below, to the clear-cutting of ancient redwood forests in the United States. Professor Roberts says the pace of life in the deep sea is virtually glacial. He said that what we are fishing now will take centuries to recover. He said that Orange Roughy and Nassau Grouper are in particular danger.

Dead Zones Marine Debris Ozone Depletion Noise Pollution Marine Debris appears as food to many varieties of marine life resulting in often fatal ingestion. For boats, both commercial and recreational, debris entanglement in motors or water intake valves can prove costly. Human activities such as swimming, diving and simple walks along the beach can also result in injury or entanglement. Debris , especially plastic film and sheeting, can settle over immobile plants and animals including valuable ecosystem habitats such as coral reefs, effectively smothering them and rendering them uninhabitable and unproductive. Reducing waste, promoting recycling, public education efforts, and volunteer coastal monitoring are major means of addressing coastal sources of marine debris.
The threat and impacts of marine debris have long been ignored. Perhaps it is the perceived vastness of ocean and lack of visibility of marine debris to most people that has allowed society to dismiss the problem as a serious threat. However, recent research demonstrates that quantities and impacts of marine debris are significant and increasing.

Brandon in hot pursuit of a giant tortoise. Seychelles, Indian Ocean biography background Brandon Cole is a wildlife photographer and writer specializing in the marine environment. His award- winning imagery from around the world includes one of the top cetacean files with over 20 species of whales and dolphins represented; extensive coverage of other marine mammals; sharks, fishes and invertebrates from tropical coral reefs to cold water kelp forests; scuba diving; and many other marine subjects.
With a degree in marine biology from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and experience in underwater scientific research (having worked with the National Park Service, the University of California, and the Australian Institute of Marine Science), he now explores one of the planet’s last frontiers, the world beneath the waves. In recording Ocean’s beauty he has traveled much of the globe, counting among his favorite locales the coral reefs of Indonesia, the "Enchanted Isles" of the Galapagos, the dizzying blue of the South Pacific, and the current swept, icy waters of British Columbia and Alaska.
Cole lives in land-locked Spokane, WA, USA with his artist wife
